Mutagen assay with Arabidopsis. A report of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Gene-Tox Program.

The small crucifer Arabidopsis is very economical for short-term yet complete assay for chemical mutagens. Thousands of gene loci can be simultaneously monitored for alterations within one culture by screening for segregation among the embryos (M2) developing on the M1 plants. This species is quite sensitive to a wide range of compounds and can activate promutagens to mutagens. There is a very high correlation between mutagenic responses of Arabidopsis and carcinogenicity in animals.

Tradescantia assay system for gaseous mutagens. A report of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Gene-Tox Program.

The hybrid diploid clone 4430- of the plant Tradescantia is heterozygous for a flower color locus. Its blue phenotype is the product of the dominant blue allele, and its pink phenotype is controlled by a recessive pink allele unmasked by mutation or deletion of the blue allele. Somatic cell mutants in the filamentous stamen hair are scored to measure mutagenic effect. The plant is used for tests conducted in the field and laboratory alike, and it is uniquely suited for the detection of gaseous mutagens.

Ecological investigation on intestinal bacterial flora of patients nursed in protected environmental units.

The present results of investigations performed on fresh fecal samples from a healthy adult and subjects with acute leukemia cultured bacteriologically using both aerobic and anaerobic techniques have led to the following conclusions. 1) In studies on the intestinal bacterial flora of the subjects examined, obligate anaerobic bacteria rather than facultative anaerobes accounted for more than 99% of the microorganisms. 2) Although some qualitative differences seem to exist between fecal bacterial flora components of the normal individual and leukemia patients examined, further investigations considering various factors controlling and influencing the composition of intestinal bacterial flora are needed to evaluate the results obtained. 3) The results obtained herein indicate that changes in intestinal bacterial flora induced by non-absorbable antibiotics are associated with the host defense mechanisms. 4) The relative predominance of aerobic versus anaerobic bacterial flora in the intestine may reflect the degree of severity of clinical manifestation in leukemia patients. In the data obtained from the present investigations, the predominating fecal anaerobic bacteria may serve as a base line for the evaluation and interpretation of the host defense system by patterns of the components of bowel flora brought about by internal or external environmental changes.

[Heart rate frequency and constitutional features of high yielding dairy cows in intensively managed and environmentally protected pasture].

The heart rate measured continuously in grazing cows over 24 hours is significantly different during specific behavioural patterns of an animal and is influenced by the stage of pregnancy of the cow. Repeated measurements of blood urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin and glucose concentration in these animals permit conclusions about the changes of body weight and of the liver function and hormonal integration of energy substrate supply. Living on pasture during the summer period the cows showed the lowest hemoglobin content and hematocrit level of the blood, which increased when the animals were housed in autumn or when near the end of their final trimester of pregnancy. Important differences, especially in the blood values, were found between the groups and within the groups between younger and older cows.
