Simplified method for diagnosis of genital and ocular infections with Chlamydia.

The diagnosis of infections with chlamydia related to the trachoma agent is best confirmed by isolation of the organism in tissue-culture. A simplified technique using conventional monolayers of McCoy cells can be used as an alternative to current methods involving heavily irradiated cells and appears to be of reasonable sensitivity. Chlamydial infection was confirmed in 38/190 females attending venereal clinics, in 22/35 patients with hypertrophic cervical erosions, and in 7/18 infants with ophthalmia neonatorum.

[Electroconization of uterine cervix efficacious method in cervical cancer prophylaxis: analysis of 2555 cases].

The authors tried to assess considerably of the cervical electroconisation in the cervical cancer prophylaxis. The 2555 women with cervical erosions were treated by electroconisation. The electroconisations were performed when cytological and colposcopical examinations were unsuspected and conservative treatment in these cases has failed. Histopathological studies after conisation's samples demonstrated in 97% cases paraphysiological cervical changes. In 3% treated women cervical intraepithelial neoplasia was diagnosed. In one case cervical carcinoma was diagnosed in postoperative material. In this study 97% efficiacy of cervical electroconisation was demonstrated. Authors suggest that cervical electroconisation is recommended method in the treatment of cervical paraphysiological changes and plays important role in cervical cancer prophylaxis.

[Morphogenesis of cervical cancer].

The origination and development of cervical cancer occurs in the tumor field, which includes cellular and non-cellular components of the connective tissue and vessels adjacent to the epithelium. During each of these phases of cancer growth alterations in these components may be observed within certain boundaries which widen with the tumor progression. A removal of the neoplasm within the limits of the unchanged, as compared with the normality, components of the stroma and vessels would guarantee against the recurrence and is a reliable criterion of the radicality of surgery being a minimum for preinvasive and microinvasive cancer. The data obtained support the fact of a sufficiently full coincidence of the rate of stromal and vascular changes with the true boundaries of the tumor field.

Health risks and effects of prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol.

Patients exposed prenatally to diethylstilbestrol have been shown to have a number of significant health risks that may be considered in the evaluation of this population. Neoplastic lesions of the cervix and vagina have been observed in a few patients. Increased prevalence of squamous intraepithelial neoplasms has been reported by several large clinical centers, and a recent observation of ovarian neoplasms has been reported. The significance of these observations remains to be substantiated. Anatomic deformities of the cervix, vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes have been associated with increased pregnancy loss or infertility. The epithelial abnormalities of adenosis and cervical erosion essentially hallmark prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol. These changes are in themselves not malignant or premalignant and rarely warrant therapy (Figure 1).

[Hormone dependent, functional gynecologic morphology in infancy and adolescence presented on the example of the cervix uteri].

Signs of different activities in the dynamic morphology of the epithelium and mucus of the cervix uteri are demonstrated in the female fetus, newborn, child and adolescent. Besides the morphological description of the ectropium, transitional zone, s.c. "reserve-cells", squamous cell nodes and production and secretion of mucus other investigations were done by allometry, caryometry and histochemistry. The examinations allow insight into the hormonal activities specially of the estrogenes in different periods of female life.

[Infections caused by viruses and Chlamydia trachomatis on uterine cervix].

A study on the infections caused by HPV-16, HSV-2, CMV and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) on the uterine cervices were carried out among 188 normal cases and 544 patients with chronic cervicitis using ELISA, virus isolation and/or DNA hybridization methods. The detection rates of these four pathogens in erosive cervices were 23.9% (64/268), 26.5% (99/374), 14.0% (22/157) and 13.4% (18/134), respectively, which were significantly higher than that in normal cervices. The total detection rate of four pathogens was 48.5% in erosive cervices, 26.8% in normal cervices at fertile age and 44.1% in normal cervices during the menopausal period. Obtained results indicate a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases in women in Beijing area. Based on above mentioned results and our experience, a simple procedure for the detection of HPV, HSV, CMV and CT on the uterine cervices was suggested.

Squamous metaplastic cells in cervical canal aspiration smears in women with ovarian function disorders.

Clinical findings and cytological data of 100 non-pregnant in-patients with squamous metaplastic cells in their cervical canal aspiration smears were compared to 100 randomly selected women without metaplastic cells, both groups having been diagnosed as ovarian disturbances. In women with squamous metaplastic cells more frequent cervical canal erosions, abnormal results of water-salt test and diagnosis of hypothalamic postpregnancy syndrome were stated. The findings together with the drift to the right of the Maturation Index, higher the Maturation Value and Eosinophilic Index and lower the Cytolytic Index, may suggest that the disturbances of the neurohormonal background are important in pathogenesis of the endocervical squamous metaplasia and that the latter may play a role in carcinogenesis.
