[Possibilities for gathering environmental information for training environmental medicine specialists].

In the context of continuing medical education, colleagues frequently face new professional topics. Advanced questions have to be clarified often to realize new skills. Beside the "conservative" information options like journals, literature searches in libraries and questioning colleagues, the "progressive" information procurement via CD ROM or the Internet is a comprehensive option to clarify certain questions quickly.

[Role of the multimedia technology in the evolution of learning of endonasal surgery of the sinuses].

The functional endonasal sinus surgery makes great strides. In the meantime learning the surgical techniques can be difficult. A learning curve describes the evolution in mastering the surgical steps by the analysis of the number of complications. This means that each learning step presents specific risks. An interactive training system with multimedia technology has been developed to diminish the complication rate. This system is presented briefly. In our view it allows an improvement of the training of ENT surgeons. It permits the visualized reproduction of difficult surgical steps as a base to master then. We propose a plan for progressive learning including this technology.

List update processing (LUP)--solving the sequence database update problem.

Sequence databases of today require frequent updating. Mirror procedures to copy incrementally updated databases as cumulative sets are the preferred method and can be implemented by straightforward scripting. However, limited bandwidth of networks and the increase of data require more powerful paradigms to reduce the workload reliably. We suggest the List Update Processing (LUP) principle. The system has been implemented on an experimental basis to update the Swiss EMBnet Node (BioComputing Basel, CH) with data from the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL Outstation, Hinxton Hall, UK). The results obtained from the prototype suggest to expand the system to several sites.
