Case of XXXXY syndrome. Development throughout adolescence and endocrine aspects.

49,XXXXY syndrome is a very rare condition that is associated with a considerable more severe phenotype than classic 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome. We present a patient with 49,XXXXY syndrome, who was first presented to an endocrinological unit at the age of 12.5 years with prepubertal genitalia. He was then lost from follow-up and showed clear clinical and biochemical signs of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism when presenting again at the age of 16 years. The patient was started on testosterone replacement therapy. This case is reported to underline the need for thorough endocrinological follow-up examinations in males with X polysomies.

Physical and mental development of adolescent males with Klinefelter syndrome.

Of 25,000 Danish schoolboys, aged 15-16 years, 16 were found to have previously undiagnosed Klinefelter's syndrome. Comparison of these boys with normal controls indicated that on average these subjects had increased height, reduced weight, impaired hearing, slightly lowered intelligence, poor school performance, increased incidence of psychological consultation and lowered sexual activity compared with their peers.

[Evaluation of the psychoaffective development of adolescents aged 15-18. A study on adolescents in the town of Botucatu, SP-aspects of sexuality].

The authors present data obtained from the analysis of a questionnaire regarding sexuality among 1,437 adolescent students in the Botucatu municipal district. The student's age varied from 15 to 19 years. The results demonstrate the evolving characteristics of the student's sexuality and suggest that sexual orientation and guidance should be part of the child and adolescent educational process. The authors pointed out that the members of Health care team should stimulate the discussion of sexuality while providing medical advice.

New developments in adolescent nutrition.

Many adolescents are not aware of optimal dietary requirements and this lack of knowledge may adversely affect their present well-being and future health. Adolescent health providers, nurses, dietitians and health teachers should disseminate information about dietary requirements and about important nutrients for adolescents.
