Intergenerational transmission of school-age parenthood.

A long-term follow-up of a group of black New Haven women who were young mothers in the late 1960s revealed that the majority of their offspring had not become parents by age 19. The offspring who experienced early parenthood were most likely to be female and to report significant depressive symptoms. Of those children--both male and female--who did become young parents, many were the offspring of women who had moved out of their mothers' homes within 26 months of the child's birth, and of women who reported suffering from lifetime depression. The data indicate that emotional deprivation, particularly at an early age, may predispose adolescents to seek emotional closeness through sexual activity and early parenthood.

Developmental tasks: a key to reducing teenage pregnancy.

The developmental tasks of adolescence are discussed as a factor in some adolescents' risky sexual activity, which may lead to pregnancy. This theory is presented in the context of a case study. Nursing diagnoses, possible interventions, and nursing implications are examined in relation to assisting at-risk teens to meet their developmental needs. It is hoped that this article will stimulate further dialogue in the literature of developmental causes of teenage pregnancy, identification of those at risk, and appropriate nursing responses.

Differences in maternal perception of the newborn among adolescents.

PURPOSE: To test the feasibility and efficacy of a Parenting Enhancement Program (PEP) on adolescent mothers' perceptions of the neonate and to ascertain the extent to which PEP reinforces the effects of maternal age or self-esteem on their perceptions. METHODOLOGY: Ninety-two pregnant adolescents were placed into one of two groups; one group participated in a PEP and the other group did not. A Background Information Questionnaire, Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and Neonatal Perception Inventory (NPI) were used to collect data from all the subjects at five intervals beginning during pregnancy and ending at 3 months postpartum. RESULTS: A t-test revealed significant differences between the two groups at 1 month postpartum on the NPI. The PEP group had a significant gain on the NPI from the second day postpartum to 1 month postpartum. The PEP subjects showed a significant gain on the SES over time. A significant relationship was found between SES and NPI at 1 month postpartum. CONCLUSIONS: The findings lend support for the use of the PEP. Self-esteem served to reinforce the effects of the PEP, but age did not make a difference.

[The adoption of foreign children].

Over the last twenty years, adoptions of foreign children have increased considerably, even as the number of French children eligible for adoption has fallen. Most adopted foreign children come from South America, India and the Far East, which are all socioeconomically underprivileged areas. Private Agencies for Adoption in foreign countries and Adoptive Family Organizations play a beneficial role. The adoption process is complex and varies from country to country, raising considerable difficulties for the adoptive parents. The child's foreign origin may compound the relational problems that can arise in any adoption. Considerable efforts have been made to provide adoptive parents with the necessary information and support. The outcome of foreign adoptions depends largely on these efforts, that must therefore be intensified.

[Teachers in the public primary schools from 1881 to 1918 in France were the 1st pedagogues and the 1st child and juvenile psychologists of the nation].

The scientific history of Humanity can gather from the data coming from the comprehensive account of the existence of austere ways of life of a private person director of a public primary school in the Limousin country around the corner between the past century and the 20e century, illustrating: The work can be hailed as a typical major reform characterised by mastering heart and mind of the juvenile during the period of 1881 to 1918, who became soldiers of the National Army. The teachers of the public primary schools have had the significance of the pacemakers of civic duties and practised what one preaches to the civil population behind battle-front. Teachers of the public primary schools have been the first pioneers pedagogs and child psychologists to the large scale of the French Nation. They have illustrated a holy cause, the national idealism of Victor Duruy.

High school students' attitudes towards and use of contraceptives.

A questionnaire survey was conducted in an urban coeducational secondary school in the North Island region. Of the 162 adolescents sampled in this study, 39 percent reported coital experience. Of these coitally experienced students, contraception was always used by only 42%. The pill and the condom were reported as the most used contraceptives. Females were found to be significantly better contraceptive users than males. Although many students report preferring their parents as a source of contraceptive information, the majority of both males and females relied upon school sex education classes as their main source of their contraceptive education. Students ability to discuss contraceptive matters with parents was found to have no effect upon coital activity. These results indicate that society must come to terms with the fact that many adolescent New Zealanders are sexually active and run a high risk of having unplanned, unwanted pregnancies.
