Traditionally the distal extension mandibular RPD is designed with the use of major connectors in cobalt chromium alloy with its associated clasping systems. However when few teeth remain, especially in the mandible, it may be helpful to use an alternative method of treatment, such as this acrylic resin labial denture design to provide as inexpensive interim alternative. The design allows easy additions of artificial teeth to the denture. Patients on whom this design is used should pursue an intense course of oral hygiene to maintain the condition of the periodontium and ridge.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Immersion in chemical solutions used for cleansing and disinfecting prostheses can decrease the strength of denture base resins, making them more prone to fracture during use. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of immersion in different chemical disinfectants for varying time periods on the transverse strength of 3 mechanically or chemically polished heat-polymerized acrylic resins. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 630 rectangular specimens (65 x 10 x 3 mm), 210 per resin (Classico, Lucitone 550, and QC-20), were fabricated. One side of each specimen was not polished and the other was either mechanically (n=300) or chemically (n=300) polished, and immersed for 10, 20, 30, 45, or 60 minutes in either 1%, 2.5%, or 5.25% sodium hypochlorite or 2% glutaraldehyde. Mechanically polished (n=15) and chemically polished (n=15) control specimens were immersed only in distilled water. The transverse strength (N/mm 2 ) was tested for failure in a universal testing machine, at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Data were statistically analyzed using 2-way ANOVA and Student t test. Multiple comparisons were performed using Tukey and Scheffe tests (alpha=.05). RESULTS: There was significant difference (P < .01) between types of polishing, with chemical polishing resulting in lower transverse strength. ANOVA identified significant differences (P < .01) in strength between mechanically polished Lucitone 550 and QC-20, and among all 3 chemically polished resins. No significant differences were observed between resins submitted to both types of polishing or between different immersion periods (10 to 60 minutes), disinfectants, or interaction. CONCLUSIONS: Lucitone 550 resin presented the greatest transverse strength values with both types of polishing. Among the mechanically and chemically polished specimens, transverse strength was not affected after immersion in the disinfectants for the immersion periods tested (10 to 60 minutes). Chemically polished control and experimental (immersed in all solutions) QC-20 specimens showed significant differences in transverse strength values.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether or not the less porous surface associated with visible light cure appliances and the absence of free monomer had any measurable affect upon mucosal erythema, and to assess the durability of such appliances in a clinical context. DESIGN: A prospective randomized trial of visible light cure (Triad VLC) and autopolymerizing (Orthoresin) acrylic resin used as orthodontic base plate materials. SETTING: University Dental Hospital and School. SUBJECTS: Fifty subjects from a consecutively enrolled sample of 69 (19 drop outs) for removable appliance therapy (23 VLC, 27 AP). OUTCOME MEASURES: Erythema meter scores and appliance breakages. RESULTS: No statistical difference in mucosal erythema between the two materials was found. Fifty-two per cent of VLC appliances broke during a 6-month period, as opposed to 7 per cent of AP appliances. CONCLUSIONS: VLC appears to have no clinically beneficial effect on the oral mucosa compared with AP. VLC appliances are currently not sufficiently durable to make them a viable alternative to AP appliances.

A method has been described for determining the reflectance spectra of teeth at various parts of the tooth surface. The shape and size of the teeth were accounted for by appropriate experimental and mathematical techniques. In all instances where a subtle difference in tooth color was discernible, this difference was also apparent on the corresponding spectra. The spectra of acrylic resin teeth showed characteristic absorption shoulders caused by pigmentation. These shoulders did not appear in the spectra of natural teeth where the reflectivity gradually increased with increasing wavelength. Differences were observed in the colors as well as the spectra of teeth from different shade guides which were marked with the same shade number by the manufacturer. The method may be applied for control of the color quality of artificial teeth as well as the selection of pigments in order to obtain an appropriate shade range and to reduce effects of metamerism.
