Classification of black powder toners on the basis of integrated analytical information provided by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

Differentiating between black powder toners used in laser printers and copiers can be challenging for forensic examiners. One hundred and sixty-two samples from 82 different types of cartridges produced by 21 manufacturers that are currently available on the Polish market were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The spectra obtained by these two methods were classified into 14 groups and 28 groups using FT-IR and XRF, respectively. These classifications served as a basis for the development of an analytical scheme for differentiating black powder toners. This scheme can be used with any two methods that supply different information about an examined sample. The research will show that if two samples are similar in polymer composition (e.g., FT-IR spectra), additional quantitative elemental composition from XRF analyses may provide more discrimination. It was possible to differentiate 82.5% pairs of examined samples using only FT-IR, 90.8% pairs of examined samples using only XRF, and 95.8% pairs of examined samples using these two methods. Obtained spectra and all the available information could be used to create/build a database. The results obtained confirm the multiplicity and compatibility of toners. Additionally, it was stated that not all the samples were original (OEM).

Descending efferents from the superior colliculus relay integrated multisensory information.

By means of their efferent projections to motor and premotor structures, the cells in the deep superior colliculus are intimately involved in behaviors that control the orientation of the eyes, pinnae, and head. These same efferent cells receive multiple sensory inputs, thereby apparently enabling an animal to orient its receptor organs in response to a wide variety of cues. This sensory convergence also provides a system in which motor responses need not be immutably linked to individual stimuli but can vary in reaction to the multitude of stimuli present in the environment at any given moment.

The Population Health Approach: health GIS as a bridge from theory to practice.

BACKGROUND: The Population Health Approach, proposed by Health Canada, is the articulation of a long advocated model of human health. This approach strives to ensure that the health system is appropriately oriented to improve health status by applying evidence based practices across the continuum from health determinants to service interventions. Although conceptually appealing, it has been difficult to implement widely in the existing program-based health care system. The Population Health Surveillance Unit (PHSU) of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) has developed a health geographical information system (HGIS), where GIS is used as both platform for information integration and as an analytical tool supporting comprehensive data analysis. With the assistance of the HGIS, the theory of the population health approach can be transformed into a practical, stepwise process supporting health services and program planning. RESULTS: Three important components of a health service planning and evaluation framework grounded in population health theory are described in this article. In particular, a stepwise methodological process to enable the incorporation of the principles of a population health into practical applications is presented; the technical functionality to integrate multiple sources of information, with different levels and scales is discussed; and sources of information about the health of the population at the appropriate level to populate this frame are proposed. An application of the methodology in the planning of health services for a high needs neighbourhood is presented as an illustrative example. CONCLUSION: The population health approach incorporates the consideration of health determinants and the context within which the health conditions arise in communities. The complexity of these relationships requires the application of innovative methodologies such as Health GIS to frame the issues practically. A population health based foundation for the planning and evaluation of health services can now move from theory to practice.

Integration of information in a clinical judgment task, an empirical comparison of six models.

Six models were compared for their effectiveness in reproducing six clinical psychologists' judgments of 38 patients on intelligence, ability to establish contact, and control of affect and impulses. In two of the models, subjective weights were used in the prediction of a judge's ratings. The judges based their judgments solely on verbal protocols from the Rorschach, a sentence completion test, and the Thematic Apperception test. The stability of the linear aspect of the judgment process was very high but decreased as the depth of interpretation of the rating variable increased. The nonlinear aspect of the judgment process had considerably low stability. In general, a model based on subjective weights was most effective in reproducing the judges' ratings.

Limits on integrating motion information across saccades.

In two experiments, we investigated whether people could detect changes in the rotary motion of a cube. A rendering of a cube rotating at a constant angular velocity was presented on a video monitor and, at a key point in the trial, a cross was presented to one side of the cube as a cue for a saccade. On some trials, a change in the rotation occurred either about 100 msec before the saccade or during the saccade; on other trials, there was no change. The change consisted of moving the cube to a new position in the "rotation sequence," after which it continued to rotate at the same angular velocity as before. There was also a control on all trials to ensure that change detection was not due to the detection of low-level motion. Although detection of the change was well above chance when it occurred during the fixation, it was at chance when it occurred during the saccade, except in the case of one participant (who was in both experiments). This chance performance also occurred in Experiment 2 for (1) a slower rotation speed and (2) an axis of rotation that made the rotation planar. The participant who had above chance performance (and as good as that when the change occurred during a fixation) reported using a "strategy" that did not track the path of the cube. It thus appears that there is no natural way in which the visualsystem tracks this rotary motion, and that detection of change requires some sort of recoding. This finding raises the question of whether good performance in other, apparently similar, motion-detection tasks is a result of similar recoding.

The role of nurse education in the integration of information in the health care environment.

The central theme of the paper is to explore the issues surrounding the development of European-wide knowledgeable nurse practitioners for effective and efficient patient care in an information intensive health care environment. Examination will be made of the role education needs to play to complement the new paradigm of health care. Where practicable, comparisons will be made between nurses' and other health care disciplines' approach to the introduction of information systems and how 'shared' approaches could be beneficial to all professions and the patients in care. The paper will conclude with a vision for the future and consideration will be given to where European nurses should position themselves to remain accountable and autonomous practitioners in health care.
