Evaluation of an intervention to change attitudes toward date rape.

The prevalence of date rape among college students is a major concern. Although much research has been done on risk factors for date rape, few researchers have specifically described interventions for the various stages of developing a date-rape prevention program. Previous programs have often relied on educational videos that feature a "typical" date-rape scenario, a format that some researchers suggest may have a negative effect on the way people engage in aggressive sexual behavior. A less violent theatrical production based on social learning theory and risk-factor reduction that resulted in a significant improvement in attitudes related to date rape among both male and female students at an elite Texas university is described.

Sociodrama: a teaching method for expanding the understanding of clinical issues.

Sociodrama is a powerful teaching strategy that combines a case study approach with traditional role-play methodology to illustrate critical issues in end-of-life care. Building on principles of adult learning and communication skills, the sociodrama method enables the skilled facilitator to draw on the learner's past experiences as resources for teaching and reflective practice. This article describes the use of sociodrama in end-of-life education with illustrations from actual sessions including key discussion points, a typical instructional plan and staging tips.

Spatial perspective taking and referential communication skills in the elderly: a training study.

A training program was designed to test the hypothesis that social interaction or, more specifically, the experience of taking the role of another in social problem solving situations and communicative activities would facilitate elderly adults' spatial perspective taking and referential communication skills. The extent to which such social interaction and role taking practice reduced measured spatial and communicative egocentrism was examined by comparing the performances of 36 elderly participants across three conditions: Training, Placebo and Control. The results provided strong support for this hypothesis and were discussed in terms of their implications for socio-ecological context explanations.

Speaking of difficult choices: the creation of a drama and dialogue group on end-of-life choices.

The purpose of this project is to relieve the emotional isolation of elders concerned about the manner in which they will die, particularly fears about loss of control. A counselor engaged elders in dialogue exploring nonthreatening ways this could be done. Drama that includes dialogue with the audience was chosen, developed, and performed at their retirement facility and in the wider community. Elders who attend these performances express gratitude and relief at learning they are not alone in their concerns, and for the information about current laws and resources for support.
