Malingering emotional distress on the SCL-90-R: toxic exposure and cancerphobia.

This study reports that 100% of 52 untrained volunteers were able to fake psychopathology on the SCL-90-R at a level comparable to the average range for psychiatric patients. Although not questioning the nonforensic clinical usefulness of the instrument, the author cautions SCL-90-R users to employ the instrument with care in contexts in which deception is an issue. Data on efforts to fake cancerphobia and emotional distress secondary to toxic exposure are presented.

Relationships of personality disorders with MMPI-2 malingering, defensiveness, and inconsistent response scales among forensic examinees.

MMPI-2 validity scales were correlated with MCMI-II personality disorder scales to examine relationships between response styles and personality disorders in a sample of 84 criminal defendants. 14 MMPI-2 validity scales were significantly correlated with 13 personality disorders. All of the personality disorder scales were significantly correlated with at least one validity measure and 11 of 13 personality disorder scales were significantly correlated with two or more MMPI-2 validity scales. While a personality disorder diagnosis may have a general effect on validity scales, relationships theoretically consistent with a given personality disorder were also found. This means that response set appears to be a manifestation of personality, and as such, examiners should expect symptom amplification or minimization or inconsistent responses, based on an individual's personality. Subsequently, forensic examiners are encouraged to evaluate the relationships between MCMI-II personality disorders and MMPI-2 validity scales to avoid misjudging MMPI-2 profiles as invalid when they accurately reflect manifestations of personality.

Is it malingering, or is it 'real'? Eight signs that point to nonorganic back pain.

Have you ever become frustrated while caring for patients who present with a confusing array of musculoskeletal complaints and other signs of illness? When routine evaluation does not suggest a diagnosis and you begin to suspect it's "all in their head," how do you identify the underlying cause? And what is the best tack to take when dealing with such patients? Thanks to research by Waddell and colleagues, there is a way to distinguish between physical and behavioral causes. Drs Kiester and Duke explain the eight Waddell signs for identifying nonorganic back pain and offer a practical approach to patient management.

Malingering as role taking.

This study investigated the relationship among psychopathology, intelligence and the simulation of psychopathological roles. The 132 Ss were 48 inpatients, 48 outpatients, and 36 nonprofessional employees. Each S simulated the MMPI profile of an anxiety neurotic, psychopathic deviate, or paranoid schizophrenic. Their simulation target was dissimilar to their diagnosis and/or Personality Screening Inventory profile. The findings were: (1) the hypothesized negative relationship between psychopathology and psychopathological role-taking was not supported broadly, but was supported more with males, blacks, neurotics, and simulators of the psychopathic deviate personality; and (2) the hypothesized positive relationship between intelligence and the simulation of psychopathological roles was supported in a small but definite relationship, with greater support among the Caucasians, males, neurotics, simulators of the 2-7 and 6-8 profile patterns, and when the simulation measure emphasized scatter and elevation similarities.
