Copper-catalyzed coupling of imines, acid chlorides, and alkynes: a multicomponent route to propargylamides.

The use of imines in a metal-catalyzed coupling with alkynes and acid chlorides is described. This process proceeds rapidly with CuI as the catalyst and provides an efficient and general three-component coupling method to prepare propargylamides. The coupling can also be diversified to allow the formation of N-carbamate-protected propargylamines with the use of chloroformates.

Palladium-catalyzed allylation of imines with allyl alcohols.

A catalytic system, Pd(OAc)2 (10 mol %)-P(n-Bu)3 (20 mol %)-Et3B (360 mol %), promotes allylic alcohols to undergo the allylation of anisidine-imines of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and furnishes homoallylamines in good to moderate yields. The reaction shows unique stereoselectivity, giving anti-isomers selectively. [reaction: see text]

Highly diastereoselective and enantioselective synthesis of enantiopure C2-Symmetrical vicinal diamines by reductive homocoupling of chiral N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines.

[reaction: see text] An efficient and straightforward method for the preparation of highly enantiomerically enriched C2-symmetrical vicinal diamines by the reductive homocoupling of aromatic N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines in the presence of SmI2 and HMPA was developed. It gives access to a variety of enantiopure C2-symmetrical 1,2-diamines in a very mild and practical way.

Highly stereoselective addition of organometallic reagents to N-tert-butanesulfinyl imines derived from 3- and 4-substituted cyclohexanones.

Addition of alkyl or aryl Grignard reagents to N-sulfinyl imines derived from 3- and 4-substituted cyclohexanones proceeds with good yields and with excellent diasteroselectivity. The selectivity of the reaction is controlled by the ring substituent rather than the sulfinyl group stereochemistry, and therefore racemic tert-butanesulfinamide can be employed.

Positive dendritic effects on the electron-donating potencies of poly(propylene imine) dendrimers.

[structure: see text] Two series of poly(propylene imine), PPI, dendrimers terminated with a redox-active donor, 4-dimethylaminobenzyl (4-DMAB), including their respective nondendronized model compounds, are reported. In these two series, a positive dendritic effect was observed for the formation of charge-transfer (CT) complexes between the dendrimers and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ). However, the nondendronized compounds did not form CT complexes with TCNQ, even though their redox potentials are similar to those of the 4-DMAB units attached to the dendrimers.

Stereoselective synthesis of alpha-silylamines by the direct addition of silyl anions to activated imines.

[reaction: see text] A highly efficient stereoselective synthesis of unusual alpha-silylamines via a direct silyl anion addition reaction is reported. This approach is convergent and avoids any problematic aza-Brook shifts of the anionic intermediates. The use of enantiopure tert-butanesulfinyl imines as the electrophiles affords exceedingly high levels of diastereocontrol for the newly formed stereogenic carbon.

Enantioselective Brønsted acid catalyzed transfer hydrogenation: organocatalytic reduction of imines.

The first enantioselective Brønsted acid catalyzed reduction of imines has been developed. This new organocatalytic transfer hydrogenation of ketimines with Hantzsch dihydropyridine as the hydrogen source offers a mild method to various chiral amines with high enantioselectivity. The stereochemistry of the chiral amines can be rationalized by a stereochemical model derived from an X-ray crystal structure of a chiral BINOL phosphate catalyst. [reaction: see text]

Silver-catalyzed imination of sulfoxides and sulfides.

[reaction: see text] Silver salts in the presence of a chelating ligand efficiently catalyze the stereospecific imination of sulfoxides and sulfides with sulfonylamides and PhI(OAc)(2) to afford sulfoximines and sulfilimines, respectively, in good yields.

Selective diethylzinc reduction of imines in the presence of ketones catalyzed by Ni(acac)2.

A selective reduction method of an electronically deficient imine in the presence of ketone was developed by employing Et(2)Zn and 5 mol % of Ni(acac)(2). The method was applied in the reduction of S(S)-tert-butanesulfinyl ketimines 1 to afford amines 2 in 23-92% yields and 73:27 to 98:2 diastereoselectivities. A plausible mechanism was proposed on the basis of an NMR study.

Synthesis of multi ring-fused 2-pyridones via an acyl-ketene imine cyclocondensation.

Polycyclic ring-fused 2-pyridones (5a-e and 9a-e) have been prepared via a microwave-assisted acyl-ketene imine cyclocondensation. Starting from 3,4-dihydroisoquinolines (4a-b) or 3,4-dihydroharman (8), fused 2-pyridones could be prepared in a one-step procedure. By using either Meldrum's acid derivatives (1a-d) or 1,3-dioxine-4-ones (7a-b) as acyl-ketene sources, mono- or disubstitution of the fused 2-pyridone ring could be accomplished. As an application of the method, a formal synthesis of the indole alkaloid sempervilam was performed.

Enantioselective hydrogenation of acyclic aromatic N-aryl imines catalyzed by an iridium complex of (S,S)-1,2-bis(tert-butylmethylphosphino)ethane.

[reaction: see text] An iridium(I) complex of (S,S)-1,2-bis(tert-butylmethylphosphino)ethane with tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate as the counterion catalyzes the hydrogenation of acyclic aromatic N-aryl imines under 1 atm of hydrogen pressure at room temperature to give the corresponding optically active secondary amines with up to 99% ee.

Iron-catalyzed imination of sulfoxides and sulfides.

[reaction: see text] The Fe(III)-catalyzed imination of sulfoxides and sulfides with sulfonylamides in the presence of iodinanes has been investigated. The best results were obtained when Fe(acac)(3) was used as a catalyst in combination with iodosylbenzene, providing an effective alternative (stereospecific) access to sulfoximines and sulfilimines.
