The Health and Activity Limitation Survey. Disabled aboriginal persons in Canada.

In 1986, out of a total of 711,725 Canadians of aboriginal ancestry, 86,505 reported having some level of disability. This article profiles disabled aboriginal persons living both on-and off-reserve, presenting data from Statistics Canada's 1986 Census of Population and the Health and Activity Limitation Survey (HALS), conducted in 1986 and 1987. Census data provide an overview of selected demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the disabled aboriginal population. HALS data provide details on the nature and number of disabilities, underlying causes of the disabilities, and the degree of assistance required for daily activities. Accidents were frequently cited as the underlying cause of disability among disabled aboriginal people living both on- and off-reserve. Most disabled original persons aged 15 and older were able to perform household duties such as preparation of meals, shopping and housework. On-reserve disabled aboriginal persons did, however, require and receive help more frequently than those who resided off-reserve.

Homeward bound. Discharge teaching for parents of newborns with special needs.

This article presents the complex work that professionals and parents must accomplish together prior to the discharge of a very ill or premature infant. Nurses play a critical role in this work by coordinating and directing the discharge teaching process. This process begins with the establishment of trusting relationships with parents and includes an assessment of the family's feelings, readiness to learn, and resources. A written teaching plan flows from this assessment and includes specific teaching topics germane to the individual child. A case manager coordinates the implementation of the plan and the evaluation of the learner's ability to care for the child independently in the home. Although time consuming and challenging, adequate discharge teaching in the NICU is critical to the successful integration of these special children into the family unit.

[Scope and limits of independent housekeeping for the aged--a contribution for the determination of needed help].

This paper proceeds from the premise that adequate help for the aged has to take into account the internal as well as the external conditions of the household. In order to determine the extent to which help is required in a specific situation, the private household is analyzed as a system of elements and their interdependence. Next, the preconditions for maintaining independence in the tasks of household management are pointed out. There are personal characteristics (ability, attitudes, skills) in relation to the means economic and social environment. Finally, the approach and methodology applied in carrying out several case studies aimed at determining the limitations of the aged in managing their situation and the extent to which they need help in specific cases are presented.

Who are those most likely to be institutionalized, the elderly who receive comprehensive home care services or those who do not?

Three samples of clients aged 65 and over from three different home care and homemaker programs are compared to elderly persons with a risk of institutionalization chosen from three random samples of people aged 65 and over living in the catchment areas of the three programs. The most important differences between the clienteles and the populations with a risk of institutionalization appear when examining the availability of help. The populations at risk generally have access to a source of help living with the elderly person while the clienteles of comprehensive home care programs depend on outside help. Home care and homemaker programs therefore replace in-home services with out-of-home services. These services will be effective insofar as they succeed in reproducing some of the essential characteristics of in-home care.
