Status of soil transmitted helminthiasis in UT of Lakshadweep.

Soil Transmitted Helminthes (STH) survey in UT of Lakshadweep was conducted during February-March 2004. The survey was undertaken using WHO sampling methodology and Kato-Katz technique for stool sample examination. A total of 387 stool samples were examined of whom 322 samples (83.2%) were found positive for one or more STH. Maximum prevalence (100%) was found in Kavaratti Junior Basic School. Thirty children (7.8%) had high intensity of infection. In Kadmat Junior Basic School high intensity TT infection was 8.9%, For AL highest intensity of infection was found among Kavaratti Senior Basic School (7.0%). Mass anthelminthic chemotherapy of all school children was advocated.

[Liesegang's rings resembling helminthiasis].

So called Liesegang's rings are lamellar corpuscles which develop after periodical precipitation of oversaturated solutions in gel medium. They can occur in cysts, closed cavities, inflammatory exudates and necroses. They resemble parasitic eggs, larvae or adult forms. A case of 28-year-old woman is presented with many Liesegang's rings in a stuff from dilated renal calyx. Their preliminary evaluation considered helminths, especially Dioctophyma renale.

The reflection of control programs of parasitic diseases upon gastrointestinal helminthiasis in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt.

The study area included Mansoura city as an urban area and Gogar village as a rural area. One thousand individuals were randomly selected from each area. Different methods of stool examination, perianal swab and urine examination of all participants revealed that the incidence in Mansoura city was in a descending order Heterophyes heterophyes 6.4%; Enterobius vermicularis 3.9%; Hymenienolepis nana 2.2%; Schistosoma mansoni 0.5%; Trichostrongylus colubriftormis; Strongyloides stercoralis and Fasciola sp. were recorded as 0.2% of each. Taenia saginata, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichocephalus trichiuris were recorded as 0.1% of each. Neither Ancylostoma duodenale nor Hymenolepis dimninuta was recorded. In Gogar, the parasitic infection was H. hetephyes 4.5%; E. vermicularis 4.1%: H. nana 3.3%; S. mansoni 1.6%; T. colubriformis 0.9%; S. stercoralis 0.5%. Fasciola sp. 0.4%; T. saginata, A. lumbricoides, H. diminuta, A. duodenale and T. trichiuris were recorded as 0.1% of each. None S. haematobiumn was detected in both areas. So, the infection rates of H. heterophyes, E. vermicularis, H. nana S. mansoni, Fasciola sp., T. colubriformis and S. stercoralis were relatively high the rural than in urban area. This was not surprising since the socioeconomic, hygienic conditions and medical services were relative high in the city than in the village. No doubt, the identifications of parasitosis pave the way for feasible treatment and control measures.

[Filariasis control: entry point for other helminthiasis control programs?].

Filariasis control programs are based on a decentralized drug distribution strategy known as "community-directed". This strategy could also be applied to the control of schistosomiasis and intestinal nematode infections. Integration of these control programs could be highly cost-effective. However, as a prerequisite for integration, it would be necessary to identify zones where these helminthic infections co-exist, specify the population categories that should receive each medication (ivermectin, albendazole, mebendazole, and praziquantel), check that combined administration of these drugs is safe and ensure that an integrated program would have no detrimental effect on the health care system and on the efficacy of ongoing programs.

[The helminthiasis situation in areas of the influence of water storage basins on the territory of Cherkassy Province].

The situation with helminthiases has been studied on the right tributaries of the Dnieper, the upper reaches of Kremenchug storage pond and in the storage ponds of the South Bug basin. The existence of genuine opisthorchiasis foci in Kremenchug storage pond is at present impossible due to the absence of Codiella mollusks. Fish of the carp family is infected in the right tributaries of the Dnieper. No diphyllobothriasis foci have been identified in the upper reaches of Kremenchug storage pond. Opisthorchiasis and diphyllobothriasis foci have not been identified in storage ponds of the South Bug basin and the formation of such foci in this area is not expected in the future. The population infectivity with geohelminthiases in these storage pond areas remained unchanged.

[Prevention of helminthiasis].

The author presents a review of scientific studies of the effect of some socio-economic factors of the country' development (population migrations, urbanization, land improvement, construction of artificial reservoirs, specialization and concentration of cattle-breeding etc.) on the feasibility of formation or reduction of helminthosis foci. Diverse effects of the afore-mentioned factors on the distribution of helminths are stressed. Importance of helminthosis control is underlined as well. Annual medical examination of the entire population is considered the main prophylaxis measure. The problems to be solved immediately by health administration are denominated.

Some social aspects of helminthiasis among the people of Gumau District, Bauchi State, Nigeria.

A helminthological study of faecal materials collected from 1037 people from four rural communities in Gumau District of Bauchi State, Nigeria was carried out using a standard diagnostic procedure. The study is the first parasitological survey to be carried out in this rural district. Thirty-nine percent of examined persons were infected with helminths. Ascaris lumbricoides, Schistosoma mansoni, Trichuris trichiura, Hymenolepis nana, Strongyloides stercoralis, Taenia sp. and hookworm were encountered. Mixed infections were very common. There did not seem to be any difference between these and results obtained half a century ago in similar areas of northern Nigeria. The findings are discussed from the point of view of the social aspects of the people which encourage host-parasite contact and their implications for public health. Suggestions are made for the control of helminth parasites in the district.

Intestinal helminthiasis and haemoparasitism in an area of endemic dracunculiasis in Oyo State of Nigeria.

In the course of a survey of human intestinal and haemoparasites in Oluyole Local Government Area of Nigeria known to be endemic for dracunculiasis, most of the inhabitants were burdened with parasitic infections which include ascariasis (43.7%), hookworm infection (27.1%), trichuriasis (31%), Strongyloidiasis (2.5%), Entamoeba histolytica infestation (3.9%), E. coli infestation (2.7%) and plasmodiasis (43.7%). Peak of ascariasis was among the 1-10 years age group while those of trichuriasis, hookworm, strongyloidiasis and Plasmodiasis were in the 11-20 years age group. The packed cell volume is generally low among the people.
