Methods of analysis for infant formula: Food and Drug Administration and Infant Formula Council Collaborative Study, Phase III.

Phase III of the collaborative study of methods of assay for nutrients in infant formulas was conducted. The study included assay of chloride, phosphorus, proximates (ash, fat, protein, total solids, and carbohydrates), thiamine, total pantothenates, and vitamins A, B12, and E. Most of the methods were those in Official Methods of Analysis, 13th edition, with slight modifications, or methods of the Infant Formula Council. On the basis of the results obtained by the collaborators, the methods for chloride, phosphorus, proximates, thiamine, and vitamin B12 have been adopted official first action. Methods for total pantothenates, vitamin A, and vitamin E were not recommended for adoption at this time because of anticipated improvements in methodology in the foreseeable future.

Use of keto acids in inborn errors of urea synthesis.

Our experience with nitrogen-free analog therapy of these disorders indicates that these compounds are adequate nutritional supplements which are non-toxic and which promote mental and somatic growth. They prevent or reduce hyperammonemia for varying periods of time in three of these disorders, but as yet have not prevented hyperammonemic coma and death in infants with complete enzyme deficiencies. Further work wi-l be necessary to determine how impending hyperammonemic coma can be detected before it becomes irreversible, as asll as to improve the therapy of hyperammonemic coma when it develops.

[Toxigenicity of microorganisms isolated from dry products for infant and dietetic nutrition].

The authors describe the results of studying the dissemination with Bac. cereus cells and staphylococci of raw material, components and ready-made products for infants' and dietetic nutrition after varying times of storage under the conditions of uncontrolled humidity and temperature. It has been demonstrated that Bac. cereus and staphylococcal strains isolated are potentially enterotoxigenic. Prevention of food poisoning with the microorganisms in question should be aimed at the improvement of industrial sanitary and hygienic conditions.

In the absence of breast, which milk is best?

The prices of liquid formula and evaporated milk at retail outlets have increased markedly over a period of 4 years. At local authority clinics the prices are almost 50% less, and communities in which the health of children is at risk should have increased access to these facilities.
