Noted difference in the digestive system in caged and floor-reared commercial egg-type pullets.

Two trials were conducted with Single Comb White Leghorn pullets reared from 0 to 19 weeks of age in cages and on litter at the same environmental temperature. Samples were obtained to determine if digestive system differences existed. Criteria measured were gizzard weight and intestine length. Results showed that floor-reared pullets had heavier gizzards with longer intestines than cage-reared pullets. The difference may be caused by consumption of litter by the floor-reared birds.

Digestive system cancer among persons subjected to occupational inhalation of asbestos particles: a literature review with emphasis on dose response.

Human data show a dose-response relationship between industrial exposure to asbestos and later development of cancer of the bronchus and lung and of cancer of the digestive tract. The data do not provide much evidence for a threshold or for the existence of a clearly "safe" level of exposure. Good dose-response data, with quantitative estimates of dose are uncommon; however, in all the literature reviewed only one paper did not support the conclusion that increased exposure to inhaled asbestos particles leads to increased digestive system cancer.

Autolytic changes in the digestive system of germfree, escherichia coli monocontaminated, and conventional baby pigs.

Tissues from three groups of pigs (germfree, Escherichia coli monocontaminated, and healthy conventional pigs) were collected at intervals between 24 minutes and 7 hours 12 minutes after death. Histological differences between the three groups were present in the alimentary mucosa and were most striking in the ileum and colon.Autolytic change was detected only in the digestive system and the sequence of autolytic events was similar in all groups. The time of onset and rate of progress differed markedly between groups and between segments of the alimentary canal. In the conventional group, autolysis started quickly and progressed rapidly. In the germfree group it was later in onset and slower in progress. The E. coli infected group was intermediate. The initial visible change occurred in the small intestine. The morphological differences and autolytic changes were described.

Cholecystokinin is not a major regulator in the digestive system in the chicken.

To find out whether physiological concentrations of cholecystokinin (CCK), a gastrointestinal hormone in mammals, are also active in chickens, the pancreatic amylase secretory response to CCK-8 was investigated in vitro. Rat pancreatic acini responded to the physiological concentration of CCK-8, but in chickens amylase release was induced at a concentration of CCK-8 1000 times higher than that observed in rats. In another experiment, biliary flow was tested with several doses of CCK-8. The bile flow was stimulated in a dose-dependent fashion, but a significant enhancement was not obtained at a concentration of 0.5 micrograms CCK-8/kg body weight, which was considerably higher than physiological ones. It is concluded that endogenous CCK does not have an important role in the digestive system in the chicken.

Further observations on the motor activity of some new histamine H2-receptor antagonists on the digestive system.

Some new H2-receptor antagonists were tested for their motor effects on the rat lower oesophageal sphincter, on the guinea pig ileum and on the guinea pig gall bladder. Two of these compounds, SKF93479 and DA4577, were found to be virtually inactive despite the fact that they are the most potent antagonists of the H2-receptors so far described. Ranitidine possessed a stimulatory effect on all the preparations examined and its mechanism of action was shown to involve the cholinergic system. Conversely oxmetidine exerted an inhibitory effect on the contractions produced by a variety of spasmogenic compounds. All of these observations, together with other data from our laboratory, seem to suggest that H2-receptors do not play an important role in the regulation of the motility of the digestive system. Moreover our data emphasize the fact that the motor effects of the H2-antagonists are connected with single molecules rather than with the entire class, and therefore represent side-effects of these compounds independent of the H2-receptor blockade.

[Pathologico-morphologic changes in the digestive system in rabid foxes].

Pathologico-morphological changes in the digestive tract were investigated in fifty naturally infected common foxes (Vulpes vulpes crucigera). Nineteen animals were found to suffer from mild cachexia, 31 animals suffered from complete cachexia. Erosions were observed in the mucosa of oral cavities of 21 foxes. Traumatic injuries appeared in the teeth of 11 animals. One case of swollen and hyperaemic tongue was described; in three cases there occurred sialo-adenitis. A mild degree of inflammation was recorded in the gullet in three animals. Fifteen animals had empty stomachs, thirty-five animals had atypical food or foreign bodies in the stomach contents; simple hyperaemia was recorded 18 times, acute catarrhal gastritis 19 times and haemorrhagic gastritis was observed in two cases. Acute catarrhal enteritis was found in six cases, haemorrhagic enteritis in one case.

[Telomerase in diseases of the digestive system].

Synthesis of dezoxyrybonucleic acid at the ends of chromosomes by telomerase is the main process leading to indefinite cell proliferation. In contrary to majority of malignant tissues the telomerase activity is not detected in the most somatic cells. Detection of telomerase may be than an alternative to widely used diagnostic markers. It is proved that detection of telomerase activity is a useful method supporting cytology. Recent data confirm the correlation between the value of enzyme activity and progress of some cancers of digestive system. Therefore telomerase could play an important role in screening programs. Actually, the methods of detecting the enzyme activity are expensive and time consuming so their application in everyday clinical practice is limited. Simple immunohistochemical and immunoenzymatic methods are tested. New therapeutic procedures become available after describing the role of telomerase in carcinogenesis. The telomerase inhibitors are supposed to play an important role in the therapy of cancer. Such therapy could be efficacious in majority of cancers in which carcinogenesis depends on telomerase activation. Telomerase inhibitors are likely to be used in connection with surgery and followed by radio- or/and chemotherapy but the potentials of antitelomerase therapy should be defined more accurately.
