In this article, an uncommon form of passenger transport is considered, the moving pavement or pedestrian conveyor running at speeds of up to 16 km/h. There are very little relevant ergonomic data for such devices and some specific laboratory experiments have been carried out using 1000 subjects to represent the general public. It is concluded that whilst high speed pedestrian conveyors are quite feasible, stations along them are likely to be large. The most attractive type is a set of parallel surfaces moving at different speeds and with handholds provided in the form of poles. This type could be extremely convenient for certain locations but will probably have to be restricted in its use to fairly fit adults carrying little luggage, and would find applications in situations where a large number of people need to travel in the same direction. Part 2, Ergonomic considerations of complete conveyor systems, will follow.
The effect of flunitrazepam and DMCM was examined on the kinetics of [35S]t-butylbicyclophosphorothionate (TBPS) binding. The enhancing effect of flunitrazepam and the decreasing effect of DMCM on TBPS binding was due to non-equilibrium conditions. The anticonvulsant benzodiazepine increased both the association and dissociation rate constants. The convulsant beta-carboline had the opposite effect. Benzodiazepine receptor ligands might affect the convulsant TBPS sites parallel with opening/closing of the chloride ionophores.

We have evaluated the effect of chronic nicotine intake on the age-associated loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. The striatal density of dopamine (D1 and D2) receptors and DA-uptake sites decreased with age. Concomitant with these changes was a pronounced loss of many behavioral functions associated, at least in part, with dopaminergic neurotransmission. Chronic oral intake of nicotine resulted in partial restoration of the loss of receptors as well as behavioral performances. The results suggest that low doses of nicotine could have beneficial effects during aging.

Serological indicators for disease activity and portal vein obstruction and/or deviation were assessed in 23 patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis before, and up to 18 months after, praziquantel treatment, as well as in 25 matched local controls. Cessation of egg-induced immunopathology was reflected by the return to normal of serum procollagen-III-propeptide and neopterin concentrations. Reversibility of portal vein pathology was indicated by normal clearance of cholylglycine in cases without signs of decompensating portal hypertension. In most patients with a history of ascites and/or haemorrhage, serum cholylglycine concentration remained pathological. The results provide evidence that the fibrogenic process ceases after specific chemotherapy, and that portal vein pathology regresses in a substantial proportion of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis cases.

Severe dietary restriction delays the physical development of rodents and leads to adult animals of reduced body size but significantly increased life expectancy. We tried to find a similar relationship in human populations using demographical and statistical methods. We show for the total Spanish male population that the mean adult body height reliably reflects the regional living and nutritional conditions. This relation does not only hold for todays socioeconomic data but can also be reproduced using data on family income in the mid 19th century. We calculated the mean height of young men liable to the military service around 1860 and determined their longevity retrospectively using posterior census data. This was done separately for all the Spanish provinces. The linear regression between both parameters manifests a statistically highly significant relationship: the smaller the mean height at age 18 in a province, the higher the chance for people living there to reach high chronological ages. Migrational movements, selection, mortality due to epidemics or unreliability of the population censuses can be largely ruled out as explications for the described correlation. Furthermore, we determined the secular growth trend in Spain for the last 130 years. From 1860 to 1920 the mean height increased by 2.7 cm, from 1920 to 1987 by another 9.8 cm. Since 1950 the trend is above 2 cm per decade country-wide. From 1974 onwards it amounts to 2.89 +/- 0.17. Such high values were worldwide looked upon as isolated cases found only in geographically and socially isolated population subgroups during very limited periods.
Pituitary lactotroph function has been examined in diet-restricted (6 hr/day) male and female rats and compared with that in animals fed ad lib. After 12 months the age-related increase in serum prolactin concentration was significantly attenuated in diet-restricted female rats. Similar effects were not observed in male rats. Isolated superfused anterior pituitary glands removed from rats on both feeding regimens at 12 or 18 months and challenged with dopamine in vitro (5 microM) did not show differential prolactin secretion. No significant differences were observed in serum prolactin secretion in vivo after administration of bromocriptine (3 mg/kg body weight, sc) or haloperidol (1.75 mg/kg body weight, ip). These results do not support an altered dopamine receptor function in the anterior pituitary lactotrophs. In contrast, central dopamine receptor function in rats 12 months of age was altered by dietary restriction, since the frequency of cataleptic responses to haloperidol injection (2 mg/kg body weight, ip) was significantly depressed in the test animals.

The warned foreperiod reaction time (RT) task is claimed to provide data supportive of the Laceys' visceral afferent feedback theory. However, although there are many reports of significant between-subject correlations between heart rate (HR) and RT, more direct tests examining within-subject covariation show, at best, inconclusive results. These studies suggested several procedural refinements which could produce stronger within-subject relationships. The procedures adopted in this investigation included manipulating attentional involvement by varying imperative stimulus (IS) intensity, using a respiratory control and a repeated measures design, recording electromyographic RT, employing a contact switch manipulandum with no moving parts, and having subjects initiate trial presentation. 40 males were divided between normal breathing and hold breath groups. Subjects received three blocks of 24 trials with the IS at either 10, 50, or 80 db. A variety of measurement and statistical approaches yielded generally negative results, with an overall mean within-subject correlation in the predicted direction of -0.06.

We present an unusual case of ruptured aneurysm of the left sinus of Valsalva discovered 41 years after a car accident. Echocardiography was a key element in establishing the diagnosis of this rare anomaly, which is often congenital but has also been reported as acquired or traumatic in origin.
