The overcount in censuses of population.

"Coverage checks of censuses of population usually show an undercount. However, in [the] 1953 census of population in Yugoslavia a slight overcount was found. This was attributed to housing rationing that created a tendency [to over report].... Similar tendencies are also likely in the enumeration of emigrants. Therefore, more attention is needed to the problem of overcount in countries with housing rationing and strong emigration." (SUMMARY IN GER)

U.S. census data uses.

"This article examines the principal applications of the statistics yielded by the 1990 U.S. Census of Population and Housing. Before doing so, however, a framework of census policy and operational features that directly influenced the content of the questionnaires will be outlined.... Deprivation and the 1991 census.

"This article looks at the patterns of relative deprivation in different types of area [in England and Wales], explores the connection between deprivation and other variables which might indicate disadvantage, and suggests some further lines of research which might be explored. Overnight visitor counts in Australia and their implications for population estimation.

"On the night of the 1996 Census, 5.4 per cent of the people counted in Australia were staying away from home (visitors), compared to 4.6 per cent in 1986. Queensland's share of the nation's visitors has risen since 1986, largely at the expense of Western Australia's. Queensland is now the most popular destination for interstate and overseas visitors, while New South Wales hosts a large proportion of intrastate visitors. But the overall picture is partly obscured because the Census missed around 100,000 overseas visitors."

Fracture prevalence and treatment with bone-sparing agents: are there urban-rural differences? A population based study in Ontario, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of self-reported osteoporotic fractures and use of bone-sparing agents, and to examine if region of residence is associated with fracture or treatment prevalence. METHODS: A census of persons aged > or = 55 years residing in 2 regions of Ontario, Canada (East York, a region within Toronto, and Oxford County), was completed between 1995 and 1998. Region was coded by record linkage of residential postal codes to 1996 Canadian Census data into 4 groups: East York (urban core), and Oxford County subdivided into: urban core, small urban, and rural. Respondents were excluded if they resided outside the regions of interest or were missing fracture data (5%). RESULTS: A total of 26,839 persons (15,541 women) were studied. Nearly 3 times as many women as men reported having had an osteoporotic fracture (14% vs 5%), with 31% and 8%, respectively, taking bone-sparing agents. Controlling for age, a diagnosis of osteoporosis, number of osteoporotic fractures, and height loss, women residing in East York were more likely (OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.0-1.4) to be taking a bone-sparing agent other than estrogen, but less likely to be taking estrogen (OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.7-0.9) compared to those living in rural areas. No regional differences were observed in fracture prevalence, treatment among those with an osteoporotic fracture, or use of a bone-sparing agent among men. CONCLUSION: Further research into regional differences in osteoporosis screening, treatment, and fractures is warranted. This should examine the appropriateness of possible differences, and separate physician practice patterns from patient characteristics, such as willingness to begin treatment with bone-sparing agents.

[Relationship between the development of a stance and the precedents of teaching education and educational practice].

INTRODUCTION: A solid perspective is the result of knowledge building and constitutes a stance of the teacher on education. OBJECTIVES: To explore if there is a stance on education among professors in the health area and to investigate if teaching education has an influence on it, as well as if there is any relation-ship between stance and academic level in teaching. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A census was made among teachers in the medical units of the health area in Guadalajara. The sample was constituted by 126 professors, who accepted to fill out the questionnaire. To explore the stance, an instrument was made from the passive and participative perspectives of education. The items were grouped in pairs: two statements that approach the same topic from opposing points of view. The criterion of obtaining an indiscriminate agreement of 0.50 or lower and a consequence of 0.50 or higher was established to consider the existence of a stance. Once the measurement was made, the professors' results were compared, taking into account the precedent of teaching background and academic level of educational practice. RESULTS: no existence of a stance was certified in any of the individuals. The results did not show any significant differences in any of the contrasting events. CONCLUSIONS: The predominance of the passive perspective shows an absence of a stance in the group. It is necessary to create educational spaces that bring about a stance in teachers that give greater consistence, scope and direction to their educational performance.
