Two hundred and thirty-eight strains of acid-fast bacilli isolated from lymph nodes of pigs were examined. Among these strains 198 were classified as Myc. avium and 40 - as atypical bacilli belonging to group II, III and IV of Runyon's classification. Only 118 strains of Myc. avium showed cultural and biochemical properties typical for these species. Some of the remaining strains were positive in the arylsulphatase test, in the reduction nitrate test or in the hydrolysis of Tween 80 test, but were negative in all amidase tests. The serological study of the bacilli belonging to Myc. avium - intracellulare group was performed according to Schaefer's method. It was found that among Myc. avium strains serotype 2 dominated (187 strains). Myc. avium serotypes 1 and 3 appeared sporadically. The majority of atypical bacilli were classified as Myc. fortuitum, and only some strains were identified as Myc. intracellulare and Myc. vaccae. Some strains remained unclassified. The results showed that identification of Myc. avium and some atypical strains isolated from pigs by means of cultural and biochemical tests is not sufficient. The agglutination test with the use of sera specific for individual serotypes of Myc. avium - intracellulare group is very useful for identification of bacilli belonging to these groups. If we have a full set of specific sera we can identify Myc. avium and Myc. intracellulare more quickly and better than with use of cultural and biochemical tests.

The present paper reports on a Q fever outbreak of 149 cases in a municipal slaughter house focus. The diagnosis was established by clinical, epidemiological, radiologic and laboratory investigations. The route of transmission was air-borne from the sick animals (not detected at the veterinary control) to man. A closer cooperation is recommended between the human and veterinary health services, for early detection of the cases, their prevention and control. The authors suggest the need to immunize the personnel exposed to the risk of contamination (zoo technical units, slaughter house personnel, etc.).

Reproductive tracts were recovered from 209 sow and 32 gilt carcasses at slaughter; animals had been pregnant not less than 27 days. Of 241 litters examined, 28 (11.6%) contained one or more porcine parvovirus (PPV)-infected fetuses, as determined by immunofluorescent microscopy. The frequencies in sow and gilt litters were 12.0% and 9.4%, respectively. The PPV antigen was detected in 219 of 334 (65.6%) dead or mummified fetuses and in 12 of 2,172 (0.5%) live fetuses examined. The 18 litters which contained only dead or mummified fetuses were infected with PPV. As the percentage of litter mummification increased, the likelihood of finding PPV increased. The PPV antibody was detected in ovarian follicular fluids of 94.3% of the sows and 78.1% of the gilts. These findings indicate that PPV is highly associated with fetal mummification and that some pregnant gilts and sows are susceptible to infection.

The large variety of qualities and quantities of raw material in numerous plants demands specific methods of processing. Each process has to guarantee full sterilization of the raw material and produce profitable products as well as to prevent as far as possible the recontamination of the products. In principle the processes are devided in the dry-rendering technology and the wet-rendering technology. The distinctive mark is the time of degreasing of the material during the process. The device that is nowadays used for the steps of sterilizing, drying and degreasing is described and the most important advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. Each technology results from a suitable combination of particular apparatusses and equipment. The eleven processes that are used in the rendering industry at present time are described with their positive and negative aspects.

In a series of 100 cattle in which there was no bacteriological or histopathological evidence of Mycobacterium johnei infection there were four positive reactions to the fluorescent antibody (FA) test with M johnei antigen and 20 to the complement fixation (CF) test. In a second series of 118 culled adult cattle M johnei infection was found in 26. The FA test was positive in 16 and the CF in 12 of those infected cattle. In 92 cattle with no evidence of M johnei infection the FA test was positive in seven and the CF test in 22.
