The analysis of correlations between levels of epiphyseal, hypophyseal, adrenocortical and gonadal hormones suggested functional disorders developing in these glands to be interdependent and account for dysfunction of the thymus and immune system in patients suffering malignant melanoma. The degree of relationship between pituitary-adrenal system and thymus function disorders increased with tumor size; it was more pronounced in males. The rationale for application of pineal gland preparations in melanoma patients aimed at combatting neuroendocrine disorders is discussed.
RBE of tritium oxide (cumulative doses from 0.33 to 14.7 Gy), in comparison with gamma-radiation, amounted to 2-3 as estimated by the thymus mass. As determined by the rate of injury and repair, the RBE values decreased from 4 to 1.4 with dose increasing, and from 6.5 to 1.3, by the periods of half-decrease and half-recovery of the organ mass. The 2-3-fold variations in the RBE values for various parameters of the organ mass changes were registered at low doses, whereas within the range of median and high doses under study, the differences were insignificant.
CARCINOID OF THE THYMUS IS A RARE PROBLEM A case is reported to add to only 16 previously reported. None of these 17 patients had the carcinoid syndrome. Complete surgical excision, if possible, is the treatment of choice.
A chromatographic fraction obtained from a thymus homogenate of young calf, was administered by intraperitoneal means to a distinct group of rats previously fed on a diet with high content of dietary fat for 50 days. The serum values of cholesterol and triglycerides and of total lipids in spleen, kidneys and aorta which were obtained from these animals were compared with those of rats fed on the same diet and not injected with the thymus fraction. The considerable decrease of the seric values was not followed by conparable results of the lipidic content in the organs.
A complex pattern of interactions appears to exist between the immune and neuroendocrine systems. Recently, vasopressin, oxytocin and vasoactive intestinal peptide have been isolated from the thymus. Using a rat somatostatin antisense RNA probe we have demonstrated expression of the somatostatin gene in the rat thymus. Furthermore, we have shown that the levels of thymic somatostatin mRNA exhibit a bell-shaped response to dexamethasone administration. Lipocortin I and II antisense RNA probes have been used as a positive control for the effects of the dexamethasone. We would suggest that somatostatin acts in the thymus in a paracrine mode to modulate T lymphocyte development.

Analysis of the literature data and of the findings of histologic and immunohistochemical studies of operation biopsy specimens of the thymus obtained from 92 patients with myasthenia has demonstrated that abnormalities of the thymus are characteristic of myasthenia patients. In nontumor involvement of the thymus (84.7 percent of the examinees) these abnormalities present as thymic parenchyma involution of varying gravity, combined (in 54.3 percent of patients) with hyperplasia of intralobular perivascular cavities, this simulating the so-called thymic hyperplasia with lymphoid follicles. Furthermore, impaired expression of certain epitheliocytic antigens is detectable and changed counts of these cells subpopulations; thymic hormones hyperproduction occurs in young patients. In thymomas (15.3 percent of the examined myasthenia patients) the tumor epithelial cell subcortical and/or cortical antigens are intact, thymic hormones production is not always excessive, and disorders in some antigens expression are similar to those observed in nontumor involvement of the thymus. Thymic dysfunction appears to play the key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disturbances in myasthenia, and disordered activity of the epithelial cells and lymphoepithelial interactions may be the major factors here.
