[Genetic activity of sim-triazine herbicides on Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast strains].

Triazine chloro derivatives: atrazine, simazine manifest no mutagenic and recombinogenic properties in yeasts; triazine methylthio derivatives: prometryne, semeron (desmetryne) generate both genetic events with low concentrations of 0.5 and 5 mg/l. It is found that prometryne is more able to generate point mutations, while semeron--to generate mitotic recombinations. In this case frequency of experimental prototrophs is twice higher than the control level.

Triazine herbicide residues in central European streams.

Triazine herbicide residues were monitored in the rivers Adour, Danube, Garonne, Herault, Loire, Marne, Oise, Rhine, and Rhône from spring 1976 to fall 1977 to determine whether the continued use of the compounds resulted in accumulations of undesirable residues in the streams. Samples were generally collected monthly or bimonthly and analyzed for the parent compounds atrazine, simazine, terbumeton, terbuthylazine, and dealkylated metabolites GS 26571 (2-amino-4-etert-butylamino-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazine) and G 30033 (2-amino-4-chloro-6-ethylamino-1,3,5-triazine). The compounds were extracted into dichloromethane and quantitated by gas chromatography (GC) with nitrogen-specific detection. Selected results were verified by GC with mass fragmentographic detection. Limit of detection was usually 0.4 mg/m3; 80 percent of all results were below 0.4 mg/m3, 14 percent were 0.4-1 mg/m3, 6 percent were 1-10 mg/m3, and 0.3 percent were higher than 10 mg/m3. Detectable residues were mainly atrazine from the downstream sampling sites. Residues usually peaked during June.

Herbicidal treatments for control of Papaver somniferum L.

Fifty-five commercially available herbicides were evaluated for possible use to destroy illicit opium poppy crops (Papaver somniferum). In the first stage, herbicides were sprayed on poppy plants grown in containers. The following compounds killed poppy plants: (a) herbicides with typical foliar activity--amitrole, bromoxynil, 2,4-D, glyphosate, ioxynil and paraquat; and (b) herbicides with root and foliar activity--the triazines ametryn, atrazine, metribuzin, prometryn, simazine and terbutryn; the substituted ureas benzthiazuron, chloroxuron, diuron, fluometuron, linuron, methabenzthiazuron, neburon and phenobenzuron; and the miscellaneous compounds karbutilate, methazole, oxadiazon and pyrazon. Severe but sublethal injury was caused by cycloate, EPTC, molinate, pobulate, cacodylate + MSMA, ethofumesate, perfluidone and phenmedipham. Abnormal development of vegetative or reproductive parts of the plant was induced by benefin, butralin, dinitramine, pendimethalin, trifluralin, diphenamid, napropamide, dalapon and propham. Efficient herbicides with negligible persistence in soil at the doses applied were evaluated on poppy plants in the field at various stages of growth. Small plants were severely injured by 2,4-D, killed rapidly by bromoxynil, ioxynil, paraquat (in mixture + diquat), and more slowly by glyphosate and metribuzin. The resistance to herbicides increased with the age of the poppy plant. Severe damage with partial kill of developed plants was obtained with bromoxynil, ioxynil, glyphosate, and paraquat + diquat; the last treatment produced the fastest effect.

Removal of pesticides from wastewater at golf courses using plants (removal by mung beans; Phaseolus radiatus L).

Many studies have been done on the removal of pollutants from wastewater using aquatic plants. Water hyacinth has been the most widely-used plant, and systems using water hyacinth are well-established. These systems, however, have a few problems in their practical use. In a previous paper, we proposed a new system that could be used as a substitute for a conventional system or, as a secondary system to assist the conventional one. Mung beans will be used to remove pollutants in this system. In the previous experiment, the removal characteristics of nutrient salts such as NO2-, NO3-, NH4+ and phosphorus salts from wastewater in residential areas were examined. Mung beans exhibited good characteristics for removing these nutrient salts. At present, pesticides used at golf courses have become a severe environmental problem polluting water supplies. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to verify whether our new system using mung beans was also effective in removing pesticides from wastewater at golf courses. An experiment was conducted on seven different pesticides. They were three insecticides; Diazinon, Fenitrothion and Chlorpyrifos, three fungicides; Captan, Isoprothiolane and Chlorothalonil, and a herbicide; Simazine. The experimental results showed that, under experimental conditions, the pesticides were rapidly removed and that they exhibited no harmful effects on the growth of the mung beans. Mung beans may be used, therefore, to remove pesticides from wastewater at golf courses although further research is needed.

[Retrospective study of the morbidity in a group occupationally exposed to chlorotriazine herbicides: preliminary results].

Two different groups of workers, involved in production or formulation of chlorotriazine herbicides during the last 10 years, have been retrospectively studied for occurrence of diseases related to the exposure to Atrazine, Simazine, Propazine, and Terbuthylazine. A control group has been selected between clerical workers of the same plants. Subjects exposed to the different compounds have been studied for inhalator and dermal exposure by active sampling, skin pads, and hand washings; samples have been further processed and specifically analysed. Urines have been studied for the presence and concentrations of mono and bidealkylated triazine metabolites. Exposure data have been collected during the last five years and extrapolations have performed for exposures in the preceding years. Clinical finding and laboratory data for all workers have been obtained from medical surveillance records. Data available for the last 10 years have been evaluated to highlight possible differences between the investigated groups.

[Retrospective study of morbidity in a group professionally exposed to chlorotriazine herbicides].

Two different groups of workers involved, during the last 10 years, in the production or formulation of chlorotriazine herbicides have been retrospectively studied in order to verify the occurrence of diseases possibly related to Atrazine, Simazine, Propazine and Terbuthylazine exposure. A control group has been selected between clerical workers of the same plants. Exposure data have been collected during the last five years and some extrapolations have been performed to hypothesize the level of exposure in the preceeding years. Clinical findings and laboratory data obtained from ten year medical surveillance records have been evaluated to highlight possible differences between the investigated groups. A first close examination of the data concerning the anamnesis and clinical, hematochemical and functional reports of the three groups of investigated subjects does not show any pathological situation or symptoms specifically connected to chlorotriazine compounds exposure and/or significant differences between exposed and non exposed. A next series of statistical surveys involving some of the hematochemical indicators (RBC, WBC, Hb%, SGOT, SGPT, gamma GT) has been performed either on internal values of each group or on the average-values of the three groups differently exposed (production, formulation, control). The first survey was a longitudinal study, the second one was a cross sectional one. Both the investigations have excluded significant differences attributable to the occupational exposure.

Utilization of chlorinated s-triazines by a new strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

A bacterium utilizing 2-chloro-4,6-diamino-s-triazine (CAAT) as sole nitrogen source was isolated under a N2-free atmosphere and identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae. Concomitant to CAAT degradation the protein content increased and chloride was released into the medium. Under air and a N2-atmosphere no reduction of CAAT degradation resulted, though this strain is able to fix molecular nitrogen, but the decomposition accelerated under anaerobic conditions. The degradation rate increased continuously with increasing CAAT concentration. A continuous CAAT degradation without CAAT accumulation was possible up to a influx rate of 4.8 mumol.l-1h-1 (dilution rate = 0.007 h-1). K. pneumoniae A2 was also able to utilize deethylsimazine (CEAT) and deethylatrazine (CIAT) as nitrogen source. Both under aerobic and anaerobic conditions CEAT could be degraded faster than CIAT. The degradation sequence of mixed s-triazines was cyanuric acid < CAAT < CEAT < CIAT, which was reflected by the degradation times of single compounds. Complete degradation was assumed for all investigated s-triazine derivatives.

Combination of multispectral remote sensing, variable rate technology and environmental modeling for citrus pest management.

The Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of south Texas is an agriculturally rich area supporting intensive production of vegetables, fruits, grain sorghum, and cotton. Modern agricultural practices involve the combined use of irrigation with the application of large amounts of agrochemicals to maximize crop yields. Intensive agricultural activities in past decades might have caused potential contamination of soil, surface water, and groundwater due to leaching of pesticides in the vadose zone. In an effort to promote precision farming in citrus production, this paper aims at developing an airborne multispectral technique for identifying tree health problems in a citrus grove that can be combined with variable rate technology (VRT) for required pesticide application and environmental modeling for assessment of pollution prevention. An unsupervised linear unmixing method was applied to classify the image for the grove and quantify the symptom severity for appropriate infection control. The PRZM-3 model was used to estimate environmental impacts that contribute to nonpoint source pollution with and without the use of multispectral remote sensing and VRT. Research findings using site-specific environmental assessment clearly indicate that combination of remote sensing and VRT may result in benefit to the environment by reducing the nonpoint source pollution by 92.15%. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of precision farming for citrus production in the nexus of industrial ecology and agricultural sustainability.

Removal of a synthetic organic chemical by PAC-UF systems. II: Model application.

This paper describes several application potentials with a recently developed model for predicting the synthetic organic chemical (SOC) removal by powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption during ultrafiltration (UF) and discusses the removal mechanism. The model was successfully applied, without any modification, to dead-end mode operation as well as to cross-flow mode operation, validating the assumption of the internal diffusion control mechanism and the continuously-stirred-tank-reactor (CSTR) concept. Even when UF was operated in a cross-flow mode, PAC added was re-circulating in suspension for only a short time. Then, solute uptake took place mostly by PAC immobilized in membrane tubes not only for dead-end operation but also for cross-flow operation. Therefore, cross-flow operation did not have any advantage regarding the SOC mass transfer on PAC in UF loop over dead-end operation. The model simulation implied that pulse PAC addition at the beginning of filtration cycle resulted better SOC removal than continuous PAC addition. However, for the pulse PAC addition mode, the model predicted somewhat lower effluent SOC concentration than the observed values, and the benefit of pulse PAC application in terms of reducing SOC over its continuous dosage was not confirmed. Longer detention time of PAC dosed in a pulse than continuously dosed PAC could possibly further decrease internal diffusivity.
