Countermeasures for long-term space flights, lessons learned from the Russian space program.

Physical exercises (PE) constitute the most important part of the Russian countermeasure system which is proved to be highly successful in fighting negative effects of weightlessness on the physiological systems of the body. To control the intensity and volume of the workload and also specific features of the regimens used by cosmonauts during SF there were provided monthly 3-days recordings of cosmonaut training sessions with the subsequent downlinking of the obtained information to the ground control center. Additionally once a month cosmonauts performed a fitness test that was composed of 11 minutes of locomotion on the passive treadmill including slow, middle range and maximal running. The results of 3-days recordings and fitness test allowed to evaluate correctly effectiveness of PE protocols used by cosmonauts and to form recommendations for their corrections. The effectiveness of the onboard exercise program after SF was evaluated based on results of detailed studies of alterations that were recorded in different parts of sensory-motor system.

The impact of outer space on inner space.

Thematic content analysis for 11 seminal values was applied to the published memoirs of 4 early U.S. astronauts (John Glenn, Gordon Cooper, "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins). Premission values did not show the expected conventional pattern; some regularities were observed across the pre-, during-, and postflight profiles. Aldrin's post-NASA adjustment problems were possibly related to his highly (and uniquely) skewed focus on Achievement to the exclusion of other values. Because of the small and unrepresentative sample of both subjects and measures, this paper is best considered an illustration of the potential usefulness of thematic content analysis in studying the history of human spaceflight and the understanding of astronauts' lives.

Restorative space management: treatment planning and clinical considerations for insufficient space.

In attempting to provide a restorative solution for cases that have been compromised by spatial considerations, clinicians have traditionally opted for an orthodontic approach that did not provide optimal aesthetics due to changes in tooth morphology, specifically tooth size and shape as a result of dental deterioration. With the advent of contemporary aesthetic materials and preparation techniques, clinicians and technicians are now empowered to deliver a penultimate result with minimal compromise to the surrounding dentition. This article presents the clinical and laboratory considerations that must be addressed when providing a prosthetic restoration for crowded teeth.
