Creating translucent edge effects and maverick internal tints using microhybrid resin.

Today's composite resins possess optical and physical characteristics that have expanded their clinical indications. The successful and predictable application of these materials depends on the practitioner's understanding of their material properties as well as the clinical requirements involved in their delivery; identifying the characteristics of the natural tooth is also important. This presentation reviews contemporary resin materials and demonstrates simple and repeatable guidelines for margin and material placement that improve the clinician's ability to implement microhybrid resins in daily practice.

Chromatic appreciation in the clinic and the laboratory.

Aesthetic requirement in dentistry is getting more and more important every day. One of its basic principles is the correct selection of colour for the restorations. Colour is a quality which is modulated by a series of factors, environmental and individual, that the clinic must know. Colour measurement by the human eye can induce to an appreciation mistake if it doesn't follow a correct protocol of light conditions and observation technique, checked by the authors, simplifying it with a practical focusing. Colour measurement instruments have appeared recently, trying to correct the problems of conventional technique.

Effect of five staining solutions on the colour stability of two acrylics and three composite resins based provisional restorations.

The effect of coffee, tea, coca-cola, orange-juice and red wine on the colour stability of acrylic and composite based provisional materials were evaluated. Two acrylic resins and three composite resins were studied. 48 standardized specimens for each provisional material were prepared. Each group was divided into 6 subgroups. Specimens from each group were immersed in staining solutions at room temperature for 30 days. Red wine and tea caused the most significant colour changes and orange juice showed the least significant colour changes. deltaE of all of the provisional restorations materials was changed after the immersion in all of the staining solutions during the experimental process.

Treating dental disharmony with mixed media.

The art of designing a new smile often involves more than one cosmetic dental procedure. It is not uncommon to combine media such as tooth whitening with porcelain veneers and crowns to create an entirely new smile. To maintain dental harmony, it is paramount that media are indistinguishable from each other and are consistent with the existing dentition.

Methods and materials for porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are an esthetic, relatively conservative restoration used to cover the facial surface of the teeth. Following proper guidelines, the practitioner can achieve successful results as a matter of routine. This article reviews the most current literature published on this subject to bring practitioners up to date on clinical methods and materials used for porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneer adhesion systems.

The outstanding bonds achieved by composite resin luting systems to etched enamel and to etched and silanated porcelain are well documented. These bond strengths, in concert with the excellent and ever-improving dentin bonding systems, encourage the use of porcelain veneers in a continually expanding range of clinical situations and ensure predictable results. Clinicians desiring to offer their patients ultimate cosmetics in conjunction with optimal, conservative restorative techniques will need to monitor scientific and clinical results obtained by leaders in the field of adhesive dentistry and continually update their technique. This review brings the clinician up to date on current research and gives the clinician an understanding of the components of today's adhesive systems technology.

Esthetic considerations in the construction of a removable partial denture.

In the construction of a removable partial denture, the patient's interest frequently lies in the improvement of his or her esthetic appearance. This desire can be underestimated by the scientifically trained dentist, resulting in a disappointed patient. The perimeters of potential esthetic improvement might be influenced by the limitations of each individual case. However, appropriate care in the selection, arrangement, and position of teeth can overcome some of the limitations. This article describes the benefits of a well-planned, systematic approach to selection of the framework design, porcelain shade, and tooth mold as well as the base finish, and it illustrates, with specific examples, how to achieve the maximum esthetics in removable partial denture prosthodontics.

Mandibular ceramic veneers: an examination of diverse cases integrating form, function, and aesthetics.

Mandibular anterior ceramic veneers, though used less frequently than maxillary anterior ceramic veneers, are highly useful for certain case conditions. The learning objective of this article is to explore the indications, tooth preparation design, provisionalization considerations, and placement procedures for these conservative aesthetic restorations. In addition, their functional utility, tissue biocompatibility, and variances from maxillary anterior ceramic veneers are discussed by means of several different case reports.

Mandibular ceramic veneers: an examination of complex cases.

The indications for mandibular anterior ceramic veneers, tooth preparation design, provisionalization considerations, and placement procedures were presented in a previous article by the author. The functional utility, tissue biocompatibility, and dissimilarities of mandibular veneers, in comparison to maxillary anterior ceramic veneers, were explored, along with indications and contraindications for this form of treatment. This article demonstrates the aesthetic range of these restorations in the context of more complex cases. The learning objective of this article is to illustrate the viability of mandibular ceramic veneers in realigning teeth nonorthodontically, while sustaining the biologic health of the periodontium, stability of the occlusion, and aesthetic parameters of each case. The importance of wax mock-ups is outlined for visualization of the final result, as well as the evaluation of root proximity to avoid subgingival ledging of the teeth and subsequent periodontal disease. Orthodontics and other methods for the correction of anterior crowding are discussed.

Selective use of gingival-toned ceramics: case reports.

Use of periodontal surgical procedures should generally be considered, prior to prosthodontic treatment, for ridge augmentation and correction of minor soft tissue deficiencies. However, in certain instances surgery may be contraindicated or undesirable. An adequate functional and cosmetic result can often be achieved by incorporating pink ceramic material in the patient's fixed prosthesis. Five case reports are reviewed to demonstrate some appropriate uses of this material.
