[Determination of traces of gallium in air by oscillographic polarography].

Gallium and its compounds in air collected by millipore filter membrane are leached by 10% HNO3 at room temperature. After being adjusted with ammonia solution to pH8-9, the leachate is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated to dryness on a water bath. The residue is dissolved with 2 ml of 10% HNO3 and then into the solution are added 0.5 ml of 5% hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution, 0.20 ml of 5% sulfosalicyclic acid solution, 0.5 ml of NaF solution (1mg F/ml) and 1 drop of methyl red solution. Let it stand for 5 min after the color of the solution turns orange by addition of 1:1 NH4OH solution. Add 0.20ml of 0.20% cupferron solution, 0.20ml of 0.5% diphenyl-guanidine solution (prepared in 95% ethanol) and 0.5ml of acetic acid-ammonium acetate buffer (pH 7.0). Then add water to make the final volume of the test solution to be 10ml and measure the height of the second derivative polarographic wave at -1.08V (vs.SCE). The sensitivity of the method is 0.005-0.10 microgram/ml, the coefficient of variation 6.8%, recovery 97.8%. Within 0.005-0.10 microgram/ml, the wave height is linear with the concentration of gallium.

Determination of flubendazole in pharmaceutical dosage forms by differential pulse polarography and UV spectroscopy.

A precise and accurate differential pulse polarographic method was developed for the determination of flubendazole in dosage forms without any prior extraction procedure of interference from the other stated ingredients. A UV spectroscopic procedure was also described and used as reference method. Analyses were generally performed at the 4 micrograms ml-1 flubendazole level. Flubendazole or its dosage forms were dissolved in 70% perchloric acid and diluted with a pH 2.6 sodium phosphate-citric acid buffer as polarographic supporting electrolyte or spectrophotometric solvent. The peak potential occurred at about -0.9 V (vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode), depending on the pH of the assayed solution. The irreversible electrochemical reduction involved the transfer of two electrons. The UV absorption spectrum showed a sharp maximum at 237 nm with a specific extinction coefficient of 886. No advantage was found in the use of first and second-order derivative spectrophotometry.

[Comparative study of the surface-active properties of gramicidin S and its derivatives by polarography].

Gramicidin S and its derivatives by the free amino groups of the ornithine moieties were studied with respect to their effect on interface tension of mercury and the polarographic background for comparative estimation of the surface active properties of these compounds. The same way as the compounds preserving their main properties, the neutral and acid derivatives lowered the polarographic maximum. No correlation between the level of the antimicrobial and membrane activity and the surface active properties of the tested compounds was observed. It is likely that the direct cause of the induced biological effect is not connected with the surface active properties responsible for possible interaction of the tested substances with the cell (protoplast).

Determination of total flavonoids in Epimedium brevicornum maxim by differential pulse polarography.

The polarographic behavior of icariin in various electrolytes was studied. It was found that a well defined peak was obtained in 0.05 mol/L ammonium sulfate supporting electrolyte at a potential of -1.51 V (vs Ag/AgCl). An excellent linear relationship was obtained between the concentration (1.28-3.85 X 10(-6) mol/L) and peak current. The method can be used to analyze flavonoids in small amount of medicinal herb samples.

Determination of isosorbide-5-mononitrate in tablets by differential pulse polarography.

A differential pulse polarographic method requiring little sample separation was developed for the determination of isosorbide-5-mononitrate in tablet dosage form with the standard addition technique and without interference from common excipients. Britton-Welford buffer (pH 3.0) was used as the supporting electrolyte, the single peak occurring at -0.36 V vs. a reference Ag/AgCl electrode. The irreversible, diffusion controlled, two-electron reduction process at the dropping mercury electrode permits a precise and accurate determination of the active ingredient in the 0.4-20 microgram/ml concentration range.

[Value of polarography in the control of viability of free compound flaps].

Time course of oxygen tension in 30 free compound flaps was studied by the polarographic method. The use of two types of polarographic electrodes--open needle and closed membrane epicutaneous--in control over the viability of free compound flaps revealed essential differences in the obtained results. Zero pO2 value in measurement with an epicutaneous electrode is not always evidence of flap non-viability. A negative "oxygen test" in measurement with an open needle electrode was an indication for a repeated operation. Repeated operations were undertaken for circulatory disorders after transplantation of 13 flaps and were successful in 8 cases. In 10 of these 13 cases the circulatory disorder was detected in the stage of subcompensation.

Simple determination of ranitidine in dosage forms by in-phase selective AC polarography.

A new AC polarographic method for the determination of pharmaceutical forms of ranitidine is proposed, based on the electroactivity of the ranitidine nitro group. Individual and composite assays as well as recovery studies are described. Results show adequate precision and accuracy. Sample preparation is easy and no excipient separation is required.
