International migration in Western Europe since 1973: developments, mechanisms and controls.

"This presentation describes the development of migration to and from Western Europe and seeks to determine to what extent such immigration and return migration movements are influenced by governmental action and regulation." It is observed that the basic factors determining immigration and return migration flows are the characteristics of the migrants themselves, policies of the receiving countries, and economic conditions in the sending and receiving countries. Data comparing alien populations and migration trends in selected European countries are provided

[Forecast of international migration, 1994-2010].

"The estimated number of immigrants [in the Netherlands] for 1994 is 104 thousand, implying a decrease of some 15 thousand compared to the preceding year.... There were approximately 79 thousand emigrants, a slight increase (4 thousand) compared to 1993. The resulting net migration decreased from 44 thousand persons in 1993 to 25 thousand persons in 1994. In 1995 a temporary increase of (net) immigration is expected, due to the increase of the number of asylum seekers in 1994.... After 1995 projected net migration rapidly declines to 35 thousand." International migration in China: a survey of emigrants from Shanghai.

"Migration trends have been largely unexamined in China, due to restrictive government policies and lack of data. This article presents the results of two surveys on emigrants from Shanghai, the largest source of emigrants and the only province with official migration records since 1958. Using information from the 1990 census, passport applications, and a survey of emigrant families in one city ward, the study concludes that migration policies, structural economic and social factors, and individual characteristics and needs shape migration patterns in Shanghai."

International migrations in Europe: Polish perspectives for the 1990s.

"This article presents estimates of the size of emigration from Poland during the 1980s as well as projections concerning the migration patterns in the 1990s. The author anticipates a contraction of the volume of population outflow by some 50 percent: from about 100,000 to about 50,000 per year, on the average. These projections are based upon the examination of the role of a number of incentives and barriers to migration, including economic, demographic and political factors. In the final section, prospects concerning immigration to Poland are briefly discussed."
