An integrated microcomputer system using immobilized cellular electrodes for drug screening.

Biosensors based on immobilized microbial cells were developed for drug screening in our laboratory. Compared with the conventional methods such as diffusion and dilution tests, biosensors have been demonstrated to be superior in sensitivity and require much shorter screening time. An integrated microcomputer system has been developed for data acquisition, database management, and mode of action estimation, which automates the screening processes and reduces the labor requirements significantly.

A microcomputer-based, R-wave triggered system for hemodynamic measurements in the forearm.

A microcomputer (with 8088 or 80286 processor)-based, R-wave triggered system for on-line, semi-continuous measurement of blood flow of one or two limbs, simultaneous with heart rate and eventually intra-arterial blood pressure, is described. The minimal interval between measurements is approximately 4 s, allowing the accurate measurement of maximal flow after ischemia. When compared to hand-operated plethysmography, the use of this system improves the precision of the measurements, minimizes perturbations of the limb circulation and eliminates the possible bias of analysis by hand.

Stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis (SMDA) for paired and unpaired biomedical data using microcomputers.

It may be necessary in biostatistics to discriminate between individuals and groups. The discriminant analysis is used for this purpose. The discriminant procedure has been programmed for microcomputers. The program has been written in a generic BASIC in order to make the procedure user-friendly. To have such a software package implemented on a personal computer may greatly facilitate the use of this complex analysis in biomedicine.

An Apple IIE microcomputer program for multiple non-independent comparisons by the Scheffe's test.

When more than two groups of observations from the same set of experimental data are compared and pairwise tested for equality of their means, appropriate statistical treatment of the data is required. The overall variation in the set of data must be considered, and also the statistical non-independence of each pairwise comparison must be taken into account. We describe a simple Apple IIE microcomputer program that applies the Scheffe's test for multiple comparisons. A numerical example and a sample output of this program are also included. The listing of the program is reported in the Appendix.

A microcomputer-based device to simulate biomechanical environments for cultured cells.

We describe software and hardware for a microcomputer-based cyclic strain device which applies programmed cycles of elongation and relaxation to cultured cells. This system has the potential to simulate many of the complex mechanically active environments found in living systems. As a sample application, we use it to simulate the cyclic stresses to which vascular smooth muscle cells in the arterial system are exposed.

Microcomputer-based analysis of cardiovascular indices.

A microcomputer-based program has been developed which performs rapid and accurate acquisition of cardiovascular data from instrumented animals or isolated perfused hearts with concurrent analysis and display of the hemodynamic indices. The system allows real-time viewing of the data in four alternative graphic displays. These include: (1) a strip-charge type display of all channels; (2) a full screen display of any single channel; (3) display of pressure-segment length; and (4) trend graphs (cumulative change with time) of calculated hemodynamic indices such as heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, percent change in myocardial segment length, mean blood flow and percent change in arterial diameter. Precise analysis of both transient and steady-state events may be performed on any segment of data stored on the hard disk. The data at any point in the experiment may be accessed by cursoring through any trend graph of the derived indices, by recalling special event markers or by using the automatic time markers. The calculated results are printed and stored in ASCII files which can be transferred to spreadsheets, databases, graphics or statistical programs.

Using an integrated software package for clinical data analysis on a microcomputer.

An integrated software package was used effectively for entering, organizing and analyzing clinical research data on a microcomputer. Both the database and the spreadsheet components of the package were used in the process. The database component enabled a form to be created for entering the data. The spreadsheet component was used in the organization and analysis of data. Macros were written within the spreadsheet environment for the statistical analysis of data. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how an integrated software like Symphony could offer features beyond simply the use of a spreadsheet for the analysis of research data. Also highlighted are the other useful features of the integrated software that are not directly related to data analysis.

High-speed automatic analysis of eeg spike and wave activity using an analogue detection and microcomputer plotting system.

Spike and wave activity is detected by analogue circuitry which separately filters the spike and the slow wave components from the EEG. The filter outputs are converted to DC voltages, which are then compared with individually adjusted threshold voltages. A detector output pulse is produced when both the spike and the wave threshold levels are exceeded. A graph of the incidence of spike and wave activity per 15 min intervals over 24 h is plotted by a microcomputer and modified impact printer. The analysis is carried out at 60 times real time on EEG recordings obtained from unrestrained patients using a portable cassette-tape recorder.

Microcomputer method for the analysis of spontaneous bursting activity of units in epileptic cat cortex.

Exact probability analysis of the spontaneous bursting activity of epileptic units is a common problem. A microcomputer method, suitable for the calculation of the scalar function of two variables of the spike occurrence of this type of discharge, has been developed. The time measured from the first spike of a burst and the duration of the preceding interburst interval were chosen as the variables of the evaluated functions. A typical unit activity was analysed by the program. The method may be useful for the classification of different bursting patterns.

Spike detection based on a pattern recognition approach using a microcomputer.

A system for the detection of spikes and sharp waves (SSWs) in EEGs of epileptic patients is described. The system uses a pattern recognition technique and it is implemented in a hybrid microcomputer. It performs the on-line simultaneous analysis of 4 EEG channels and thus it is appropriate for long-term EEG recording. The performance of the system was considered satisfactory when compared with that of a panel of electroencephalographers.

Microcomputer analysis techniques for evaluation of benzodiazepine effects on rat electrocorticogram.

Quantitative analysis of drug effects on the EEG is usually performed on a minicomputer using an EEG signal that has been recorded on a high frequency FM tape recorder and edited to remove artefact. However, this equipment is expensive and so the present study evaluated a much cheaper system, an 'on-line' microcomputer and 3 programs for data reduction. Using this system to assess diazepam effects on the rat electrocorticogram, it was concluded that period amplitude analysis may be preferable to the Fast Fourier Transform or Hjorth analysis.

The use of a microcomputer in a biomedical research project.

The use of an inexpensive microcomputer system in an NIH-supported biomedical research project is explained. Computer programs which store and analyze air pollution data; records from hospitals, doctors' offices, pharmacies, and schools; and data from a community public health survey are described. The analysis consists primarily of calculations of various temporal and geographical correlation coefficients in order to determine whether particulate air pollution is affecting public health in southern Puerto Rico.

A microcomputer record system for diabetic patients.

A computerised medical records system for diabetic patients has been developed on a Vector Graphics MZ microcomputer using programs written in UCSD-Pascal. The system allows addition or deletion of patient records, alteration of records, alphabetical listing of recorded patients' names, and printing of individual records in a concise format. The amount of information capable of being stored in each record makes the easy to use system a useful device in the clinical management of diabetic patients.

Steady state enzyme kinetics: experimental design and data analysis by microcomputer.

One of the most time-consuming, yet essential, operations involved in the steady state kinetic study of enzymes is the design and optimization of experimental conditions. A computer program was developed for the Sinclair ZX-81 (or TS-1000, 1500) microcomputer which will optimize substrate concentration for preliminary and subsequently more refined kinetic analysis of one, two or three substrate systems. This program also analyzes the data collected from these studies by linear regression, weighted linear regression or weighted non-linear regression. In addition to the above program several of the enzyme kinetic statistical analysis programs of Cleland (1979) have been translated from FORTRAN into BASIC and implemented on the ZX-81 and the TRS-80 model II. Inexpensive commercially available software was used to overcome the inability of the ZX-81 to read data files from magnetic tape making the data analysis programs easier to use.
