[Antibiotic sensitivity of 32 strains of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus in oral medicine patients in community practice].

Susceptibility to eleven antibiotics of 32 strains of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus isolated from gingival or dental samples in patients who are nor hospitalized nor receiving antibiotics since six months was tested by diffusion and MIC. 12.5% of strains were resistant to macrolides and lincosamides. This result is significantly different from the result obtained with strains isolated from patients hospitalized for chronic pulmonary problems (36%). This resistance to antibiotics could be due to selection pressure as shown by the high incidence of resistant strains in antibiotic treated patients.

A comparison of the in vivo antibacterial effects of 'OpSite', 'Tegaderm' and 'Ensure' dressings.

Three semi-permeable polyurethane dressings, 'Ensure', 'OpSite' and 'Tegaderm', were tested for their ability to prevent the increase in bacterial population under naturally hydrated, occluded volar forearm skin. Only 'OpSite' inhibited the bacterial multiplication in these tests. It is concluded that in the practical situation, 'OpSite' could well confer a greater margin of safety.

[Sensitivity to antibiotics of 64 strains of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus isolated in human clinical cases. Demonstration of erythromycin resistance].

Susceptibility to fifteen antibiotics of 64 stains of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus isolated from bronchial secretions was tested by susceptibility antibiotics diffusion and MIC method. Sixteen phenotypic profiles were determined by MIC. Some of these profiles and the spontaneous loss of resistance to erythromycin indicate plasmidic origin of this resistance.

[The bacterial flora of preputial space].

The bacterial flora of the preputial space of 210 healthy males (43 children aged between 2 and 11 years, 137 males between 12 and 60 years and 30 men over 60 years) was determined by smears and cultueres from glans penis, sulcus coronarius and the adjacent prepuce. The results were grouped according to various criteria, e.g. glans covered or uncovered and age of males. Differences in the distribution of germs could be found in relationship to age. In the case of an uncovered glans penis the presence of microbial flora corresponds to the grampositive saprophytic bacteria in areas rich in sebaceous glands. In the case of a covered glans the density of microorganisms increases. Prevalent are gramnegative anaerobes, especially Bacterioides melaninogenicus, also enterococci, enterobacteria and coagulase-positive staphylococci.

Resistance to antibiotics in humans and animals on the Cape Verde Islands.

From the Cape Verde Islands no studies are known about an efficient treatment with antibiotics and chemotherapeutics. Because of this human samples and samples of domestic animals were collected, the different bacterias were isolated and the antibiograms were analyzed by agar-diffusions-test. The human samples consisted of wound-, eye-, anal-, vaginal- and throat-smears, the animal samples consisted of jaw-, anal- and wound-smears. the aim of these investigations was to make efficient treatment with antibiotics and chemotherapeutics possible. The best efficacy had Cefotaxim, Gentamicin and Trimethoprim + Sulfonamid. Very poor were Penicillin G, Aminopenicillin and Cephalexin.

Numerical taxonomy of staphylococci.

Over two hundred staphylococci from human and animal sources and representatives of established species of Staphylococcus, Micrococcus and Planococcus were compared in a numerical phenetic survey using 115 unit characters. Data were analyzed using the Jaccard coefficient and the unweighted pair group method with averages algorithm. Cluster composition was not markedly affected by test error, estimated as 3.49%. The staphylococci were assigned to eighteen clusters containing four or more strains and to three single member clusters. Most of the clusters were distinct and homogeneous though two were divided into subclusters. Some of the clusters and subclusters were equated with the established taxa S. aureus, S. capitis, S. cohnii, S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, S. hominis, S. hyicus, S. saprophyticus, S. sciuri subspecies lentus, S. sciuri subspecies sciuri, S. simulans, S. warneri and S. xylosus, the remaining ones may represent the nuclei of additional centres of variation. The numerical data also cast doubts upon the reliability of some of the tests recommended for the identification of coagulase-negative staphylococci.

[Identification of bacteria from use-surface disinfectant solutions and their sensibility against disinfectants (author's transl)].

The investigations are concerned with bacteria which had been isolated from use-surface disinfectant solutions originated from 19 disinfection dosage apparatus of different hospitals and from 8 taps of a centralised disinfection dosage apparatus in an other hospital. The greatest part of the isolated bacteria belonged to the genus Pseudomonas. Beyond it there were yellow-pigmented bacteria like Xanthomonas, Flavobacterium and Micrococcus. After subculture on solid peptone-containing media most of the isolated bacteria turned out to be sensitive to the disinfection solutions in a concentration range, that had been applied in the dosage apparatus. The examination of 6 disinfectants showed, that there were considerable differences in the efficiency to kill the bacteria. Even one preparation pointed out to be absolutely ineffective at applied concentrations.

[Firefly assay of bacterial ATP: comparative study of extraction methods (author's transl)].

The firefly bioluminescence ATP assay presents multiple applications in microbiological analysis. Nine ATP extraction methods were tested on thirteen Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial species. The DMSO method appears as the procedure for choice. It provides the highest yields and the best reproducibility, even at high bacterial concentrations. It is simple, rapid and can be recommended for routine analysis. Assays carried out after extraction by this procedure show that in 24 hours cultures, the ATP content ranges from 0.28 fg to 15.65 fg per cell depending on species.

[Stomatococcus mucilaginosus meningitis in immunocompromised child].

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic infections are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in patients with malignancy developing granulocytopenia as a result of therapy. A case of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus meningitis is reported. CASE REPORT: A 2 year-old boy was admitted because he had developed fever and neutropenia during chemotherapy given for neuroectodermal tumor. He was previously treated for a Stomatococcus mucilaginosus septicemia with vancomycin given for 15 days through an intravenous catheter which has subsequently been left in place. At admission, fever was associated with severe degree of aplasia (70 WBC/mm3). The patient was given IV ceftazidime plus amikacin. Two days later, the boy developed acute meningitis due to Stomatococcus mucilaginosus; he was then given IV vancomycin (40 mg/kg/d) and imipenem (100 mg/kg/d). Persistence of abnormal clinical and bacteriological findings required subsequent intrathecal administration of vancomycin (1.5 mg/d) for 5 days. CSF cultures were negative 2 days later, leading to stop IV antibiotics after 3 weeks. The catheter was removed 1 week later. CONCLUSION: This patient represents the third reported case of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus meningitis. Combined intrathecal and systemic administration of vancomycin seems to have been useful in our case.

[Sterilization by ionizing radiations (author's transl)].

The first part summarizes the general characteristics of ionizing radiations and their activity on microorganisms: lethal and mutagenic effects, sensitivity conditions. Different microbial species have different sensitivities: gram negative bacteria are more sensitive (D10 approximately 5-10 Krads), bacterial spores and viruses are more resistant (D10 approximately 1 Megarads). The second part considers the main applications of radiosterilization: some are at present in full development (medical and surgical disposable equipment); others are still at the experimental stage. Practical aspects, determination of sterilizing doses and control of radiosterilization are also described.
