Recent and prospective population growth in the U.S.S.R.: 1979-2025.

"This report presents the results and assumptions of a set of projections of the population of the USSR, 1979-2025. Trends in population size and age-sex composition as well as fertility, mortality, and emigration are discussed.... The projections show that the population of the USSR will grow throughout the period to 2025. The working age population will grow very slowly for at least the next 10 years, and will not recapture the rapid growth experienced in the 1970s. The pension-age population will double in size between 1980 and 2025."

Italy in the context of European migration.

"This article is divided into three sections. The first section analyses the transformation of Italy and other Southern European countries from nations of emigrants to nations of immigrants. In the second section, the volume and characteristics of immigration to Southern Europe are analysed in an attempt to point out, given the context of national characteristics, the similarities in the phenomenon of non-European migration. In the third section, an attempt is made to analyse the role played in the labour market by migrants from developing countries and to present evidence of the expansion of the underground Italian economy." Comments by R. Magni are included (pp. 113-4).

[Consequences of international migration for Austria. Population scenarios until 2031].

"The consequences of international immigration on population development and the labour market [in Austria] are assessed on the basis of four scenarios of possible political and economic developments in Europe. In case of massive immigration (net +50,000 per year) the residential population of Austria...will grow to 9.5 million within 40 years.... With a net immigration of +25,000 persons per year the residential population will grow to 8.3 inhabitants.... Without any immigration or with immigration and emigration of equal proportion, the population of Austria will shrink to somewhat above 7.1 million...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Reunification: the impact of migration on potential West German growth].

"Using a certain number of hypotheses on labour efficiency, it is possible to evaluate the impact of reunification on West Germany's growth from 1988 to 1993. The additional growth generated by this increase in the labour force is approximately six points of GDP over the period. From 1989 to 1991, years during which immigration was at its height, the annual growth rate was 1.2 to 1.5 points higher than it would have been had reunification not taken place. Since 1991, this potential growth has been on the downturn and should become moderate in coming years." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER AND SPA)

Migration, urban growth, and development: Pakistan's experience.

The authors "focus primarily on voluntary, peacetime migration [in Pakistan], both internal and international, and attempt to analyze some of its possible socioeconomic consequences." The importance of the role of migration in urban population growth is discussed, with attention to implications for social and economic development. The impact of large-scale emigration of workers to the Middle East is also assessed. The analysis is based on data from the 1951, 1961, 1972, and 1981 censuses as well as from secondary sources.
