Briquet's syndrome, hysterical personality, and the MMPI.

The authors compared the MMPI scores of 29 inpatients diagnosed by other authors as having hysterical personality and 21 outpatients diagnosed by the authors as having Briquet's syndrome. The two groups of patients differed significantly in age, on the MMPI lie scale, and on the MMPI hypochondriasis scale but not on any of the other MMPI scales. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for further defining the differences and similarities between hysterical personality and Briquet's syndrome.

Drug use by the polysurgical patient.

The authors compared the drug use of 23 patients with 5 or more major surgeries (mean number of surgeries = 9.8) with that of a matched control group (mean number of surgeries = 1). Total drug use of the polysurgical patients was 3.7 times greater than that of the controls and involved narcotics, analgesics, barbiturates, and minor tranquilizers. The authors describe the characteristics of polysurgical patients, one of which is chronic pain, and propose a treatment plan that involves psychological intervention for the patient and his or her family.

Hysteria and women.

Through the ages, hysteria has been considered to be a female disease. The author explores the historical record and concludes that the hysterical (histrionic) personality is a caricature of femininity. It develops under the influence of cultural forces, particularly male domination, and is not a natural attribute of women. He then inquires whether the concept of a distinct femininity is itself a stereotype or is based on inborn personality differences between the sexes. Citing current biological and ethological evidence, he favors the latter explanation. He suggests that the hypothesis of sex role distortion include not only the equation femininity-caricature-hysterical personality but also the cognate one, masculinity-caricature-"machoism."

Charging a patient with assault of a nurse on a psychiatric unit.

A patient was successfully charged with assault of a nurse on a Psychiatric Unit and was placed on probation for one year. The judge found her guilty despite the location of the incident and her 20-year history of previous psychiatric treatment, including 14 hospitalizations. Following this confrontation, the patient improved markedly in her behaviour and has continued to lead a more productive life without hysterical outbursts. It is concluded that proceeding with legal charges in such a situation is justifiable and can also be therapeutic.
