Simultaneous treatment of sewage sludge and food waste by the unified high-rate anaerobic digestion system.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the unified high-rate anaerobic digestion (UHAD) system treating co-substrate of sewage sludge and food waste. A 24-hr operating sequence consisted of four steps including fill, react, settle, and draw. The effects of co-substrate and organic loading rate (OLR) on the performance were investigated to verify the system applicability. In each OLR, the UHAD system showed higher CH4 recovery (> 70%), CH4 yield (0.3 L CH4/g VSadded) and CH4 production rate (0.6 L CH4/L/d) than the control system. In the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) tests on thermophilic biomass of the UHAD system, the average SMA of acetate (102 mL CH4/gVSS/d) was much higher than those of butyrate (85 mL CH4/g SS/d) and propionate (42 mL CH4/gVSS/d). It was demonstrated that the UHAD system for co-digestion resulted in higher methane yield and methane production rate due to sequencing batch operation, thermophilic digestion, and co-digestion. The enhanced performance could be attributed to longer retention time of active biomass, faster hydrolysis, higher CH4 conversion rate, and balanced nutrient conditions of co-substrate in the UHAD system. Consequently, this optimized unification could be a viable option for the simultaneous treatment of two types of OFMSW with high stability.

[LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY IN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM]

The principal procedures of digestive surgery to be made by laparoscopy are mentioned. Some of them (Cholecystectomy, Fundoplication, highly selective Vagotomy, some diagnosis procedures, etc.) are perfectly consolidated, and they are the chosen procedures for they have passed the test of time and experience. However, some other procedures are still a controversial topic, and it is expected that in the near future they will be defined, according to results. Some indications are emerging as for example the Laparoscopic Staging of certain digestive cancers. lf its feasibility and efficacy is demonstrated, it will be a new tool with which the doctor in change will count with for his patients' benefit.

Chronic mercuric chloride intoxication in digestive system of Channa punctatus.

The effect of exposure to a sublethal concentration (0.30 mg/l) of mercuric chloride on the activities of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, amylase, trypsin, and pepsin has been examined at intervals of 7, 15, and 30 d in the digestive system of a teleost fish, Channa punctatus. Inhibition of the activities of all these enzymes was noted after the first week of treatment. Treatment of the fish for 15 d resulted in marked increases in the activities of all the enzymes. A slight fall in enzyme activity was recorded after 30 d, but the overall activity was higher than in control fish.

Characterization of proteases in the digestive system of spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus).

Enzymes responsible for digestion of food protein were evaluated and characterized in red lobster (Panulirus interruptus). Several tissues, organs, and body fluids were analyzed. The same composition of proteases was found in gastric juice, midgut gland, and intestinal contents. Using specific substrates and inhibitors, we identified several isotrypsins and isochymotrypsins by gel electrophoresis. Protease activity was found at pH 3 and reduced by using pepstatin A. Operational variables of enzymes were characterized for management of future studies and potential biotechnologies. Types and activities of lobster digestive enzymes constitute background information to study the digestive abilities of the organism further, and will lead to understanding nutritional needs and feeding ecology, mainly because decapods display unique morphologic, metabolic, and behavioral changes during their life cycle. Also, such enzymes become alternative tools for use in biotechnologies.
