Work and health interact with one another in the following ways: when work is adapted to human goals and capacities of men, work can play important role in promoting both physical and mental health; exposure to chemical, physical and biological risk factors, can lead to occupational diseases; both work environment and work condition can play a role, together with other risk factors, in the development of diseases characterized by a multiple etiology. Such diseases have been commonly called work-related. In occupational disease, there is a direct cause-effect relationship between hazard and disease, whereas in work-related disease, the work environment contributes, but as one of a number of factors, to the development of the disease. Because of their multifactorial and complex etiology, work-related diseases represent an interesting subject for epidemiological surveys. At the time, epidemiological study of work-related diseases can take the following forms. Descriptive studies relating morbidity to occupation, work area, task, or specific exposure can be concerned with anything from "hard" indicators of illness (such as death), to "soft; indicators (such as non-specific symptoms). Descriptive studies of work-related diseases utilizing the latter indicators of disease are usually study ad hoc, since morbidity registers do not exist for any disease in our country.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Weight, tension and harmfulness of professional activity, peculiarities of labour conditions and characteristics of work, shift dynamics of operative personnel's working capacity were studied in the course of 8-hour working day currently accepted at hydroelectric power stations (HEPS) and experimental 12-hour schedule. Working conditions classified as "admissible", positive dynamics of operators' state, their social and material contentment were a basis for 12-hour two-shift schedule to be recommended as more appropriate. At the same time, problem of optimal shift schedules for operative personnel of HEPS remains unsolved and needs to be further explored.

Despite the popularity of early retirement schemes in the Netherlands, little attention has been paid to the factors underlying this phenomenon. In this article an initial step is taken towards a multivariate modelling of plans for taking voluntary early retirement of older employees. Data for this have been obtained from a survey conducted among civil servants eligible for early retirement. This analysis includes various aspects which could be related to retirement. It appears that the attitude towards work, health, expectations regarding the consequences of retirement with respect to the loss of income, self-esteem, the perceived (positive or negative) attitude of the partner are the main reasons for civil servants to retire early or not. In the last model, containing all independent variables, 25 percent of the variance can be explained.
The scope and content of the services provided by a regional, occupational health service are described in quantitative terms. Many of its activities are in compliance with state regulations. In this respect this service differs greatly from other, regular, clinical services. About 22,000 examinations are performed annually, and there are about 140,000 employed persons in the region, so that about 1 in 5 workers is examined by the service annually. The 3 main activities of the clinic are pre-employment examinations, periodic surveillance of certain groups of workers and evaluating work capacity. Most of the abnormal findings identified in such examinations relate to musculo-skeletal disorders, noise-induced hearing loss and, to a much lesser degree, lung and skin problems. Some of the ways in which service is provided in remote and small work sites are described, and issues of availability and accessibility presented. Based on the data collected, suggestions are made with respect to future changes, including computerization and quality assurance methods.
50 children who had beneficied of repair of Fallot's tetralogy with a follow up of 2 to 11 years, were psychologicaly and physicaly evaluated. Work capacity tests were performed in 12 cases. Children with early repair (before 5 years of age) have a very better result. Preliminary palliative treatment cause worse results. Physical capacities are normal in the majority of children. Work capacity is not different from normal children. Repair before school age is the best way for a normal life.
There has been studied application of a complex approach to development of automated ways to gain contactless psychophysiological correction of functional status and improvement of performance of working up operators. The psychophysiological support of operator consisted in combined presentation of functional music, surf noise and pulsed dynamic green lighting under a special program built-up on the principle of biological feedback of heart and respiration rates. The individually adaptable audio and visual pulses on the programme showed a rather high efficiency as was confirmed by the change in the set of psychophysiological indices (heart rate, arterial pressure, cutaneogalvanic reaction, accommodation volume, critical rate of flicker fusion, electroencephalogram), and subjective SAM (self-feeling, activity, mood) estimates in the course of extended operator's activity.
Physical work is still present in many countries, specially in developing ones. The physiological analysis of the work load could be conducted through two different ways, referring to his energetic cost and/or to the mechanical power of the human motor. The purpose of ergonomics is to organize any physical professional task in order to maintain the workers as much as possible inside the limits of a fatiguing activity. The process of fatigue affects differently a "general activity" and a "local work." If a worker is engaged in a general hard activity, like carrying a load or pushing a trolley, an increase of oxygen consumption or/and an acceleration of the heart rate could be observed. This latter, allowing to estimate the oxygen cost of the work, is more affected if the work is performed in a hot environment. In order to establish the ratio between the data observed at the work place and the maximal working capacity of the organism, it is possible to experiment with the physiological effects of transitory increases of the work stress, by increasing the load or/and the frequency of the repetition of the "unit" of work done. When the task could be described in terms of local work, the correct methodology is based upon the general rules established respectively for the static and the dynamic work. In both the cases, it is possible to determine the critical rate of the muscular activity, the part of the muscular capacity engaged at the work place and the probable time for local exhaustion, in order to limit the duration of each period of work. It should be remembered that 50 years ago, Lucien Brouha proposed that heart rate determinations at work be used as a criteria for a better organization of human work by a non-sophisticated method.
