[Effect of therapeutic doses of tetracycline on the structure of the thymus gland in rabbits].

Tetracycline was administered orally to Shinshilla male rabbits (female, 2.0-2.5 kg) twice a day, the daily dose being 20 mg. The thymus was examined in 1 and 2 weeks by the methods of histo- and cytometry. The reliability of the differences and correlation were estimated by the non-parametric methods. Out of 15 parameters studied 8 showed reliable differences and 5 were statistically connected. The following structural shifts were found: (1) increased numbers of activated and middle thymocytes evident of intraorgan cell activation, (2) higher mitotic index and lower index of the cell degradation resulting in the cortex hypertrophia by the end of the week, (3) increased cell density in the medullar substance which is the morphological criterion of intraorgan migration of the cells from the cortex into the medullar substance. Thus, the morphometric analysis of the thymus proved to be much more informative than the usual morphological analysis. The observed structural change in the thymus is considered to be a result of the antigenic effect of tetracycline on the host.

[Structure of the thymus gland of the rat in the prenatal and early postnatal periods of development after exposure to tetracycline during the period of fetogenesis].

Structure of the thymus in Wistar rats has been studied during antenatal and early postnatal periods of ontogenesis by means of histological, morphometric and electron microscopic methods. Theraputic doses of tetracycline hydrochloride have been administered during fetogenesis (15-20 days of pregnancy). An accelerated formation of the thymic structures, cellular blasttransformation in the thymic cortex and movement of lymphocytes from the cortex into medulla and increased secretory activity of epithelioreticulocytes have been revealed. The data obtained are considered as a display of the organ's immune response to tetracycline administration.

[Pathologico-anatomic findings in thymus gland and female sex organs of slaughtered calves after treatment with anabolically effective substances].

The authors describe the pathomorphological findings in the thymus, female genital organs and Bartholin's glands in 413 slaughter calves with white skeletal musculature. Anabolic substances like oestrogens, androgens, and corticosteroids had most likely been administered to a total of 302 of these animals. In all cases thymic atrophy was present. Microcysts of the ovaries were seen in 17% of the cases, mucometra of the uterus in 49%, hydrometra in 23%, and squamous metaplasia in Bartholin's glands in 15%.
