NSSM 200 and the world population explosion.
This paper was published in the wake of Pope John Paul II's encyclical 'Evangelicum Vitae', which condemns abortion and contraception. The author describes how, in the mid-1970's, the Vatican blocked the implementation of President Nixon's 'National Security Study Memorandum 200', which was intended to combat global overpopulation. The author explains that excessive population growth is considered threatening to U.S. security interests, and concludes that "papal security-survival along with the influence of fundamentalist Protestant opposition to birth control is now pitted against the U.S. and world security-survival."

Religious groups as adaptive units.
This essay provides a sketch of religion as a set of biologically and culturally evolved adaptations that enable human groups to function as adaptive units. Recent developments in evolutionary biology make such a group-level interpretation of religion more plausible than in the past. A brief survey of relevant concepts is followed by a relatively detailed interpretation of Calvinism as a religious system in which explicit behavioral prescriptions, beliefs about God and his relationship with people, and numerous social control mechanisms combined to change the city of Geneva from a collection of warring factions to a unified population.

Providing volunteer dentistry in a foreign country.
I would highly recommend taking a dental mission trip if the opportunity presents itself. While the work is demanding, there are few situations that produce such a high level of personal satisfaction. There are several organizations that sponsor medical/dental trips to foreign countries such as Faith In Practice and the Christian Medical and Dental Society. You can also check with your local place of worship. Many opportunities can be found by simply making your desire to serve known. You also can provide care without leaving the State of Texas. The second annual Texas Mission of Mercy will be held in Tyler, Texas. The first event was a huge success, and this year's event promises to be even more successful!

Religiosity and psychological well-being of older women in Hong Kong.
The purpose of this study was to examine the religious belief of the elderly women in Hong Kong and how their life satisfaction and depressive symptoms were related to various dimensions of religiosity. Data based on a community sample of older women (N = 180, mean age = 74.2 years) indicated that majority of them (56.7%) reported beliefs in folk religion and ancestor worship. The Catholics and Buddhists appeared to enjoy a better mental health status than did the Protestants, which seemed to be mediated by better family supports and physical health condition. Objective measure of attendance at religious activities was not related to psychological well-being. In contrast, subjective feelings that religious faith was a source of strength and comfort, and that it would help in times of difficulty were significantly associated with psychological well-being.
