The author describes current global population trends as being similar to the development of a cancer in the living body. "The human species, through the instrument of culture, has become the dominant force of planetary ecological change. Our adaptations have become maladaptive. Moreover, the human species as a whole now displays all four major characteristics of a malignant process: rapid, uncontrolled growth; invasion and destruction of adjacent normal tissues (ecosystems); metastasis (distant colonization); and dedifferentiation (loss of distinctiveness in individual components). We have become a malignant ecopathologic process. If this diagnosis is true, what is the prognosis? The difference between us and most forms of cancer is that we can think, and we can decide not to be a cancer."

Health professionals, through their knowledge of medical ethics, public health models, and direct advocacy may suggest treatment of the vexing new problems of the 21st century. The evolving concept of Peace through Health encapsulates such activities, and Croatian Medical Journal's activities in the 1991-1995 war in Croatia is one example of such work. The Responsibility to Protect report, on the duty of the international community to prevent genocide and ethnic cleansing, shows the congruence of medical ideas with the domain of international affairs. Collateral Damage, a report on potential health consequences of war on Iraq, is a recent example of the increasing involvement of physicians in the direct conduct of world affairs. Prevention and healing on a global scale require clear ethical principles for action, just as they do in the personal practice of medicine.

This review summarizes the present concerns on the deteriorated biological systems. This concern has generated many publications since it is a very serious subject. The human being has produced a deep impact on the environment that could even could induce climatic changes. Because these circumstances have increased the socioeconomical differences between developed and third world countries, the United Nations Organization had organized three summit conferences (Oslo, 1972; Rio do Janeiro, 1992; Johannesburgh, 2002) in order to propose solutions. This review discusses the conclusions held at these conferences.
American science fiction television series of the 1960s dramatized the complex conflicts raging throughout society in simple, allegorical terms. The power struggle between the older and younger generations that pervaded many of the conflicts and social reform movements of this era was explored in the four most imaginative and acclaimed science fiction television series of the 1960s: The Twilight Zone (1959-1965), The Outer Limits (1963-1965), Star Trek (1966-1969) and Lost in Space (1965-1968). Each show presented the mature male as the bearer of culture, the holder of power and the keeper of the scientific mysteries, but instead of a standardized response to the problem of the 'generation gap' and the ever-increasing polarization of American society along generational lines, these dramas offered both pessimistic and optimistic views of the outcome of contemporary intergenerational social strife.
