Genome analysis of Peromyscus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) VII. Localization of satellite DNA sequences and cytoplasmic poly(A) RNA sequences of P. eremicus on metaphase chromosomes.

A satellite DNA fraction from P. eremicus, having a buoyant density of 1.705 g/ml in neutral CsCl density gradients, was isolated. In situ hybridization experiments, using 3H-RNA complementary to this DNA fraction indicated that the short (heterochromatic) arms of most of the autosomes contained this sequence. Conversely, in situ hybridization using 3H-complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesized from the cytoplasmic poly (A) RNA of P. eremicus (comprising a substantial fraction of total messenger RNA) showed that the number of silver grains in the long arms (euchromatin) was significantly higher than that in the short arms. The X chromosomes showed a distinct localization pattern of both sequences.

Hypothalamic monoamines and their metabolites in the deermouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, during daily torpor.

Deermice, subjected to food rationing, an ambient temperature below thermal neutrality and short photoperiod, were sacrificed in euthermia or during daily torpor. Hypothalamic monoamine and metabolite levels were quantified by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Significant elevations in the levels (pg/microgram protein) of dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and homovanillic acid were noted in the torpid animals. The concentrations of norepinephrine and serotonin displayed no significant alterations between the euthermic and torpid states. However, the serotonin metabolite, 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid, was elevated by almost 300%. These data suggest that an increase in activity of the hypothalamic serotonergic and dopaminergic systems occurs during daily torpor in the deermouse.

Inheritance and expression of Esterase-1 allozymes in Peromyscus leucopus.

We analyzed inheritance of 5 Es-1 alleles in P leucopus and found them to be co-dominant and segregating from a single autosomal locus, thereby verifying assumptions of Mendelian inheritance implicit in field data. We also described an allele that is 'silent' in hemolysate, but is active in liver extract.
