An accountability model for occupational therapy.

Clark recently challenged OTRs to investigate accountability theory. It is a topic which deserves attention. This paper describes briefly the nature of accountability theory and suggests how theory can be applied to occupational therapy practice. An accountability model based upon an education model is presented for occupational therapists who wish to design their own accountability plans. Examples are included to show how the model can be translated into operational terms.

Osteoporosis prevention project: a model multidisciplinary educational intervention.

Osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic disease resulting in low bone mass, which increases the risk for fracture. Evidence suggests that lifestyle changes to prevent or delay development of osteoporosis should be implemented throughout the life span. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary primary osteoporosis prevention program for community-dwelling women aged 25 to 75 years to determine if osteoporosis prevention program participants (treatment group) increased their knowledge of osteoporosis, calcium intake, and exercise compared with a control group. Other outcomes included participants' willingness to adopt lifestyle changes and ability to view themselves as able to make behavioral changes. Subjects in the treatment group versus control subjects increased their knowledge of osteoporosis over time. At posttest, subjects in the treatment group were more likely to be planning to change calcium intake, and at follow-up, they were more likely to be changing their calcium intake. No other group differences were found between the two groups. These findings suggest that a multidisciplinary education program may have an impact on knowledge and behaviors that may help to delay the development of osteoporosis.

[Self-esteem in adolescents. A study].

In the present article the adolescents, self esteem is considered. An investigation has been effected in two schools of the Capital. Results show a strong relationship between Nursing and the problems related to the adolescence. Nursing answer and activities have to be expounded in the considered reality in order to have a nurses taking care of adolescents not only inside the hospital but also in the community. It is the case to develop a new model of nursing, an educational model related to health and wellness.

[Curriculum design of the Master's in Public Health program via the inservice education system. The Working Group of the Innovation Program in Health Systems and Professional Training].

This article presents the curriculum design process experience of the School of Public Health of Mexico's In-Service Master of Public Health Program, offered through the distance education model. The Program was created as a response to the Mexican health system's human resources training needs, with the purpose of contributing to the health services decentralization process, the strengthening of managerial skills of local health district managers, and to the professionalization of public health. The Program's design and development are based on a distance education system as an alternative to the traditional training models. The distance education model offers the possibility to train human resources on their job, to link permanently theory and practice, and to improve, in the short-term, the professional performance of students. The curriculum design process included the analysis of the student's training needs based on their professional profile, the type of plan of study that could take into account those training needs, and of the advisers and tutor's required profile, educational background, and job experience. The different disciplines were grouped around the knowledge objects, and not around independent courses. The health planning process was taken as a central axis and conductive line for integrating the thematic contents. The Master's plan of study was conformed by four stages: health diagnosis, formulation of the organized social response, implementation, and evaluation.

Parental role models, gender and educational choice.

Parental role models are often put forward as an explanation for the choice of gender-atypical educational routes. This paper aims to test such explanations by examining the impact of family background variables like parental education and occupation, on choice of educational programme at upper secondary school. Using a sample of around 73,000 Swedish teenagers born between 1972 and 1976, girls' and boys' gender-atypical as well as gender-typical educational choices are analysed by means of logistic regression. Parents working or educated within a specific field increase the probability that a child will make a similar choice of educational programme at upper secondary school. This same-sector effect appeared to be somewhat stronger for fathers and sons, while no such same-sex influence was confirmed for girls. No evidence was found that, in addition to a same-sector effect, it matters whether parents' occupations represent gender-traditional or non-traditional models. Parents of the service classes or highly educated parents--expected to be the most gender egalitarian in attitudes and behaviours--have a positive influence upon children's choice of gender-atypical education.

Evolutionary epistemology and dynamical virtual learning networks.

This paper is an attempt to define the main features of a new educational model aimed at satisfying the needs of a rapidly changing society. The evolutionary epistemology paradigm of culture diffusion in human groups could be the conceptual ground for the development of this model. Multidimensionality, multi-disciplinarity, complexity, connectivity, critical thinking, creative thinking, constructivism, flexible learning, contextual learning, are the dimensions that should characterize distance learning models aimed at increasing the epistemological variability of learning communities. Two multimedia educational software, Dynamic Knowledge Networks (DKN) and Dynamic Virtual Learning Networks (DVLN) are described. These two complementary tools instantiate these dimensions, and were tested in almost 150 online courses. Even if the examples are framed in the medical context, the analysis of the shortcomings of the traditional educational systems and the proposed solutions can be applied to the vast majority of the educational contexts.
