[Occurrence of bacteria in the mouth from genera of Micrococcus, Kocuria, Nesterenkonia, Kytococcus and Dermacoccus].

The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of different bacteria in the oral cavity. The bacteria were present in the oral cavities of 73 (48.7%) of 150 individuals. Nesterenkonia halobia, the most frequently isolated species, was found in 20 (27%) individuals, Micrococcus luteus in 16 (22%), Kocuria kristinae in 12 (16%), Kocuria varians in 10 (14%), Dermacoccus sedentarius in 9 (12%), Micrococcus lylae in 8 (11%), and Kytococcus nishinomiyaensis in 3 (4%). Mean counts of these microorganisms were relatively low and amounted in log10 CFU/ml saliva for M. luteus 1.87 +/- 0.52, for M. lylae 2.03 +/- 0.39, for N. halobia 2.14 +/- 0.56, for K. kristinae 2.20 +/- 0.69, for K. varians 2.19 +/- 0.67, for K. nishinomiyaensis 1.72 +/- 0.39, and for D. sedentarius 2.27 +/- 0.55. The factor limiting the population sizes of these microorganisms was most probably the antagonistic activity of the bacteria living in oral cavity.

[Catalase-negative Rothia dentocariosa: evaluation of additional descriptive tests].

Rothia dentocariosa is one of the human oral flora members, and classified in the group of coryneform bacteria which are taxonomically heterogeneous. Although R. dentocariosa is considered as a contaminant in throat cultures generally, it may be the causative infectious agent in the presence of predisposing factors. The catalase activity which is used as a simple and initial identification test, becomes contradictory because of the detection of the catalase negative strains recently. The aim of this study was to compare several biochemical and enzymatic reactions for the identification of catalase positive and negative R. dentocariosa strains. A total of 42 R. dentocariosa strains which were isolated from throat cultures have been studied, and the positivity rate of mannose fermentation in catalase negative R. dentocariosa isolates was found to be significantly higher than those catalase positive (p < 0.05). In conclusion, mannose fermentation test seems to be a useful tool as an additional identification method of catalase negative R. dentocariosa isolates.

[Acute sepsis caused by "Gaffkya tetragena" in adult with hypogammaglobulinemia (author's transl)].

A case of acute sepsis caused by Gaffkya tetragena in an adult with acquired hypogammaglobulinemia has been described. The Authors pointout the importance that particular conditions of disreactivity and/or of immunodeficiency can play in the acquistion of pathogenicity by Gaffkya tetragena. In the case under discussion a high deficit of IgG and IgA was demonstrable, which had previously caused a long series of infective bacterial diseases.

Periimplantitis.

Orodental rehabilitation through the use of implants offers very high success rates. In this paper, we describe some of the complications involved with this technique, such as periimplant disease and, within this category, periimplantitis, an inflammatory reaction in which there is a loss of the bony support of the implant accompanied by inflammation. The aetiology of the disease is conditioned by the status of the tissue surrounding the implant, implant design, degree of roughness, the poor alignment of implant components, external morphology and excessive mechanical load. The microorganisms most commonly associated with implant failure are spirochetes and mobile forms of Gram-negative anaerobes, unless the origin is the result of simple mechanical overload. Diagnosis is based on changes of colour in the gum, bleeding and probing depth of periimplant pockets, suppuration, x-ray and gradual loss of bone height around the tooth. Treatment will differ depending upon whether it is a case of mucositis or periimplantitis. Therapeutic objectives focus on correcting technical defects by means of surgery and decontamination techniques (abrasion with carbon particles, citric acid solution, topical tetracycline application and laser surgery). This study also presents a microbiological study of periimplantitis conducted by the Barcelona School of Dentistry that determined that the antibiotic therapy proven to be most efficacious in the antibiogram was the association of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid.

[Microbacterium oxydans, a symbiont of Djungarian hamster, displaying probiotic properties].

A resident microorganism (strain Kho-17) was isolated from secretions of the specific glandular structures at the angles of mouth of Djungarian hamster (Phodopus campbelli). According to cultural, morphological, and physiological properties as well as to the phylogenetic analysis basing on the sequences of 16S rRNA gene and analysis of the cell wall the strain was assigned to the species Microbacterium oxydans. The bacterium isolated displayed probiotic properties when administered orally as a suspension of live cells for 20 days to Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), which manifested themselves in increased body weight and weights of several organs and stimulation of both cell-mediated and humoral immunities.

Use of Arthrobacter davidanieli as a live vaccine against Renibacterium salmoninarum and Piscirickettsia salmonis in salmonids.

Arthrobacter davidanieli (proposed species nomenclature) is a non-pathogenic Gram-variable bacterium related to, but taxonomically distinct from, Renibacterium salmoninarum, the aetiological agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD). We have demonstrated that vaccination with live A. davidanieli is effective against BKD in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) showing above 80 relative percent survival in experimental challenge trials. Good protection was also demonstrated in long-term field trials where Atlantic salmon were naturally exposed to R. salmoninarum challenge until 23 months after vaccination. The same vaccine, which is licensed in Canada against BKD has also proved effective in reducing mortality from experimental challenge of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) with Piscirickettsia salmonis, the causative agent of piscirickettsiosis. Under field conditions in Chile, use of the vaccine led to a significant reduction in piscirickettsiosis mortality in coho salmon over 10 months following sea transfer. The vaccine strain is unique in that it is the first live organism to be licensed as a vaccine for use in aquaculture. Potential mechanisms of protection against the two taxonomically disparate pathogens are discussed.

[Study on isolation and systematic taxonomy of strains of genus Nesterenkonia].

Four Gram-positive, Nesterenkonia-like strains were isolated from hypersaline soils collected from Xinjiang Province, China and East of Egypt. The four strains were studies using a polyphasic approach, which included morphological observation, growth pH and temperature rang, tolerance to NaCl, KCl, MgCl12 x 6H2O, CaCl2, enzyme profiles, chemotaxonomy, (G + C) mol% content, 16S rDNA sequences analysis and DNA-DNA hybridization, and the only two type strains of the genus Nesterenkonia, Nesterenkonia halobia DSM 20541T and Nesterenkonia lacusekhoensis DSM 12544T were used as control. The test results showed the four isolates belonged the genus Nesterenkonia, but they had great differences from the other two valid species of the genus Nesterenkonia, and thus they should represent four new species of this genus.

[Characteristics of microbial association in secretions of various mammalian sebaceous glands].

The following secretions of mammalian skin glands were subjected to a microbiological survey: the middle-abdominal glands of great and Mongolian gerbils, the preputial gland of musk deer, the perineal organ of African civet cat, the interdigital skin regions and interdigital glands of bison, European bison, European roe deer, and musk deer. All the secretions were found to contain microbial associations. The composition of bacterial species in the secretions and the quantity of microorganisms varied among different animal species, during the ontogenesis of an animal, and depended on the topography of a gland on an animal body as well as on its functional state in different seasons or upon hormonal changes. The secretions of certain glands contain factors which determine the composition of microbial species in a particular ecological niche and the stability of such a cenosis.

Impaired sweating in the diabetic neuropathic foot and its influence on skin flora.

Three groups each of 10 subjects, were defined by clinical and neurophysiological studies: diabetic with neuropathy (Group A), diabetic without neuropathy (Group B) and normal control (Group C). Sweating on the foot was quantified and the bacterial flora on the dorsum of the foot and deltoid area were examined. There were no significant differences in type of density of bacterial species found on either foot or deltoid regions between any of the three groups. Diabetics free of clinical infection have a similar skin microbial flora to non-diabetics even when sweating is seriously impaired. It is therefore unlikely that a change in the resident microbial flora is involved in the propensity of diabetic neuropathic patients to foot ulceration and infection.

Clinical and laboratory studies on treatment with 20% azelaic acid cream for acne.

In a series of investigations using 20% azelaic acid cream as a therapy for acne, it was found that the treatment, compared with its placebo, significantly reduced inflamed lesions after 1 month and non-inflamed lesions after 2 months. No changes in sebum excretion rate occurred, but a significant reduction, 15.9 to 10.5%, of free fatty acids of skin surface lipid was detected after 1 month. The follicular Micrococaceae density was significantly reduced after 1 month, and after 2 months there was a significant reduction in follicular Propionibacterium spp density. The final reductions were 2,500 and 44 fold, respectively.
