[Genetic nature of abnormal larval development in the progeny of l(1)ts403(sbr10) females of Drosophila melanogaster].

In Drosophila melanogaster the small bristles (sbr) gene is vital and evolutionary conservative and controls nuclear export of mRNA. Sbr mutant alleles had a broad pleiotropic effect. High frequency of abnormal larva dying (up to 18 %) at the first instar stage in progeny of heat shock (37 degrees C, 1 h) treated mutant females is one of the most interesting l(l)ts403(sbr10) allele effects. Abnormal larvae display characteristic phenotype that involves the Malpighian tubules defect. Using interphase FISH method (fluorescence in situ hybridization), we showed that abnormal larvae had monosomy on chromosomes 2 and 3. DNA content in neuroblast interphase nuclei of abnormal larvae is 2.1 times less than in normal larvae. We suggest that abnormal larvae could be full or mosaic haploids that appeared as a result of maternal genome loss during fertilization or the mitotic division. Larvae with the same abnormalities appear in a progeny of females with different genotypes mating with males carrying compound chromosomes 2 or 3. FISH analysis showed that such larvae had monosomy only on a chromosome that is compound in paternal strain. Thus, monosomy on large autosomes may cause aspecial phenotype of abnormal larvae in D. melanogaster.

Impact of new insect growth regulators and their formulations on mosquito larval development in impoundment and floodwater habitats.

Four insect growth regulators were evaluated in the laboratory and field. In the laboratory, AC-291898 showed excellent activity, inducing 90% mortality in Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti at 0.5-0.7 ppb. The EC formulation of XRD-473 was slightly more active than the technical material with an LC90 of 0.84 ppb and 0.92 ppb against Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively. In the field, AC-291898 at the rates of 0.005 and 0.01 lb AI/acre caused 85 and 100% inhibition of adult emergence of Cx. tarsalis 2 days after treatment. Activity, however, declined at the low rate, while the high rate remained active for more than 7 days. In the same species, XRD-473 induced complete inhibition of adult emergence 2 days after treatment at the rates of 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05 lb AI/acre. At the low rate (0.01 lb AI/acre), activity declined markedly, while the 2 higher rates remained active for one week. In Cx. peus larvae, AC-291898 at the rates of 0.005, 0.01 and 0.025 lb AI/acre produced complete inhibition of adult emergence 2 days after treatment, but activity declined at the 2 lower rates 7 days after treatment, while the high rate (0.025 lb AI/acre) remained active for more than one week. Methoprene (4%) pellets were effective against Cx. tarsalis for 7 days at the rates of 0.25 lb AI/acre whereas 0.5 lb AI/acre was required to obtain similar results against Cx. peus larvae.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Ecdysteroid mediated fat body acid phosphatase activity during larval development of rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Lepidoptera).

20-hydroxyecdysone (20-HE) stimulates acid phosphatase activity in the fat body of ligated late-last instar larvae. This effect is time dependent and the specific activity of enzyme increases significantly in hormone treated insects. 20-HE also stimulates general protein synthesis. Cycloheximide treatment either in conjunction with 20-HE or after hormone treatment blocks the increase in enzyme activity as well as increase in protein content. However, actinomycin D treatment does not alter the enzyme activity while it blocks the increase in total RNA as well as increase in protein content.

Morphogenesis of the adrenal gland of Triturus cristatus carnifex during larval development and metamorphosis.

During the morphogenesis of the adrenal gland of Triturus cristatus, a cranio-caudal differentiation is observed together with a migration of the two cell types composing the adrenal gland: the steroidogenic cells and the chromaffin cells. During the cranio-caudal differentiation the two cell type gradually occupy an increasingly posterior position on the mesonephros until they are distributed, in the adult, along the whole kidney. The migration brings the cells from dorsal or dorso-lateral position, with respect to the venous vessels, to the ventral surface of the kidney, an arrangement typical of the adult.
