When patterns are broken, new patterns emerge. A story of community collaboration for health.

The Bridge Community Health Clinic (BCHC) is the result of a multifaceted community effort that persevered though seven years of analysis and planning to achieve a community health center that met the entire community need. An influx of Southeast Asian emigrants who held different beliefs regarding medical care showed how the established health system was not meeting the needs of the changing population. This article describes how the Wausau community came together with the help of health care businesses and formed BCHC, promoting community health.

[Pattern of choice in preparation of attempted suicide by poisoning--with particular reference to changes in the pattern of prescriptions].

This investigation was initiated in 1990 to investigate the choice of preparation in cases of attempted suicide treated in the Emergency Unit in Odense University Hospital during the past decade. The results show that 1) an increase has occurred particularly among young women in the use of analgesics obtainable without prescription (e.g. 13% of young women employed paracetamol as the toxic agent), 2) the number of persons employed dextropropoxyphene did not decrease and 3) a great increase was observed in the number of cases of poisoning with ketobemodoni chloridum. In 1985, several barbiturates were withdrawn from the Danish Medical Codex and this was followed by a decrease in the number of cases of poisoning among women but not among men. At present, approximately 10% of men who poison themselves still employ barbiturates. The number of cases of poisoning with barbiturates in men is thus not reduced but phenobarbital is the preparation of choice. The authors conclude that more attention and care should be paid when prescribing dextropropoxyphene, ketobemodoni chloridum and phenobarbital and the availability of paracetamol without prescription must be debated critically.

Suicide bereavement and recovery patterns compared with nonsuicide bereavement patterns.

This study compared bereavement experiences of suicide survivors with those of other survivors. The primary focus of investigation was upon grief reactions suggested to be unique to suicide bereavement and upon quality of grief resolution 2-4 years after death. Fifty-seven women and men, between the ages of 24 and 48, who had experienced the death of a marital partner were interviewed. Subjects were assigned to one of four groups by mode of death (suicide, accident, unanticipated natural, and expected natural). Analyses of variance and Scheffe procedures indicated no significant differences among survivors on frequencies of grief reactions considered common to all bereavements. The suicide survivors were significantly different from all others on certain grief measures, including rejection and unique grief reactions. On various other grief measures, significant differences were indicated among the groups of survivors. Four primary conclusions, implications of the findings, and limitations of the study are discussed.

[Distribution pattern of chemicals in surface waters as a reflexion of entry pattern--volatile halogenated hydrocarbons].

The part gives some data about various light volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in surface waters of the industrialized city and its surroundings--the halogenated forms, chloroform and bromoform and the most used solvents trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, tetrachloromethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. 80% of the concentrations of chloroform, tri- and tetrachloroethylene were in the range of less than 1 microgram l-1, 90% of bromoform, tetrachloromethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane were found to amount less than 0.1 microgram l-1. With the help of the differential-diagnostic assessment method described in the first part we tried to evaluate the data for tetrachloromethane. The highest values were obtained for almost all sampling points in April--a possible cause may be the use of this solvent for cleaning and repairing procedures with sport boats (although tetrachloromethane has been prohibited for such uses for some years there may be some remainders which were used for these purposes).

[Distribution pattern of chemicals in surface waters as a reflexion of entry pattern--heavy metals].

The concentrations of the heavy metals lead, cadmium and mercury were measured in surface water samples of an industrialized city and its surroundings. All but one value of Cd (particular) were less than 0.5 microgram l-1, 30% of the lead (particular) values were less than 0.5 microgram l-1, 70% 0.5 ... 10 micrograms l-1, 86% of the total mercury less than 0.1 and 14% 0.1 ... 0.5 microgram l-1. By applying the differential-diagnostic assessment method it could be found that the highest values were found in the vicinity of a metal-using factory. On a sampling point near such an enterprise the part of particularly bound lead was very low, that means a recent input, whereas on another sampling point with a high total lead level 95% were particularly bound which refers to a continuous input.
