[Compare the occupational stress and work ability among the police-officers, doctors and teachers].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the occupational stress and work ability in doctors, police-officers and teachers. METHODS: Changes in occupational stress work ability were measured with revised occupational stress inventory (OSI-R) and work ability index (WAI) for 288 doctors, 191 police-officers and 343 teachers, and then comparative and correlation analyses were made. RESULTS: 1. The difference in occupational stress and strain between the groups was statistically significant (P < 0.01), and the score of the police-officers was higher than that of the doctors and teachers (P < 0.05), but the personal resources of police-officers were lower than those of the doctors and teachers (P < 0.05). 2. Analysis of the 6 items of occupational role questionnaire revealed that the scores of role ambiguity, role boundary and responsibility were obviously higher in police-officers than in doctors and teachers, while the scores of role overload and physical environment were higher in teachers (P < 0.05). 3. Analysis of all items of personal strain revealed that the scores of vocational strain, psychological strain, physical strain, but not of interpersonal starin, were significantly higher in police-officers than in doctors and teachers (P < 0.05). 4. As to the personal resource, the results indicated that recreation and self-care of doctors and teachers were superior to those of police-officers. The score of social support was highest in doctors. The score of rational conduct was highest in teachers (P < 0.05). 5. Occupational role and personal strain were positively correlated, and both were correlated negatively to the personal resources (P < 0.01). The correlations of work ability, occupational stress and strain, and personal resources were significant in teachers (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: For polices-officers, doctors and teachers, different yet relevant measures should be taken to reduce the occupational stress so as to improve their work ability.

[Characteristics of work schedules of miners exposed to vibration in placer and ore mines in the North-West].

The contributors review the peculiarities of modelling the labour regimen for the vibration-affected professions in the North-West, based on the dosage-related approach, inasmuch as the existing techniques of ore deposits elaboration (chamber-long face and magnification of ore), and the organization of pit works on cyclogrammes, did not allow a practical application of the labour regimen recommendations proposed by the USSR Ministry of Health.

[Physiological and hygienic characteristics of working conditions in the copper and nickel-processing industry].

Basing on complex physiological and hygienic studies, the contributors propose an assessment of the work load of those engaged in the major professions in copper and nickel metallurgy. The results of the study revealed a significant functional overstrain in workers, which resulted from manual labour overload, unfavourable microclimate conditions (hot in summer and cold in winter), along with a set of hazardous factors (dusts, toxic gases, etc). A set of health-related measures was proposed.

[Clinico-functional criteria of work capacity and the characteristics of professional rehabilitation of patients with stenocardia].

Proceeding from the experience gained in the medical examination of persistent working ability loss, which was based on the results of bicycle ergometric studies in 383 patients with stable angina, the authors developed clinicofunctional criteria allowing the practitioner to establish the degree of physical working capacity limitation (poor, satisfactory, good). The validity of the criteria was confirmed by coronary angiographic evidence and long-term observation results. Over 3 years of the follow-up, 28% of the patients who had been group II invalids and 7% of the Group III died among those recorded by the medical-and-labour examination commission that used the criteria described above. All the individuals who had been regarded as being able to work survived. The occupational activities adequate to the fitness of patients with angina promote the development of adaptive mechanisms, mobilize the functional reserve of the blood circulatory apparatus, enhance their physical performance. It has been concluded that the efficacy of the medical-and-labour examination in angina is determined by an accurate assessment of its severity and closely associated with the application of bicycle ergometry.

[Psychological adaptation of older workers to occupational conditions].

As a result of ergometric investigation of labour activity of 187 workers of mass professions (machine-operators, metal craftsmen, fitters), involved in physical labour of medium heaviness, the following age patterns in behavioral self-regulation of activity were detected in people of 20-79 years of age: reduction of the occupation in the major jobs and increase in the occupation in the auxiliary, less tense jobs, decrease in the density of work time, changing in the activity strategy, reduction of the duration of continuous work and increase of the duration of the subsequent rest, dividing of the alloted volume of work into parts. Physiological rationalization of labour of older workers based on the established patterns of their behavioral adaptation to labour is a sufficiently effective measure for labour rehabilitation and lengthening of the period of active life.

[Results of physiologic occupational studies of intensive care unit nurses].

Continuous measures of the pulse by wireless telemeter to value the degree of work were performed by 6 nurses in intensive care unit during work in shifts about 476 hours. Work activity and time were registed simultaneously. In the outcome is ascertained that the work of these nurses is middle heavy on an average with heavy or very heavy short portions. To reduce or to avoid the latter proposals are recommended.

[Necessities, possibilities and difficulties of vocational rehabilitation in patients with early stomach carcinoma--experiences in 89 patients].

Because of the favourable prognosis in patients with early stomach cancer even extensive vocational rehabilitation measures should be taken into consideration. Opposed to that is the fact that about 40% of these patients already exceed the age limit for employment and only 10% are younger than 45 years. The polymorbidity, too, is relatively high, 21% of our patients were not capable of employment already before the outbreak of their cancer disease. The postgastrectomy syndrome prevents 40% from resuming work within the first postoperative year and jeopardizes the working capacity even after that time, at least in patients with manual occupations.

[Effect of the syndrome of asthma of effort on work fitness of bronchial asthma patients].

A total of 133 patients aged 35 to 55 years with bronchial asthma (BA) were examined. Of these 85 patients showed an infection-dependent and 48 a steroid-dependent clinico-pathogenetic disease pattern. Physical performance was studied with regard to the character of occupation, the degree of respiratory function impairment and the effects of intal and orciprenaline sulfate on the reproducibility of asthma of effort (AE) and performance of that category of patients. The development of AE was found to lead to a further decrease of work fitness of BA patients irrespective of the clinico-pathogenetic disease pattern, the degree of external respiratory function impairment and the character of occupation, resulting in the limitation of physical work possibilities of BA patients. The data are also presented concerning the effects produced by intal and orciprenaline sulfate on AE reproducibility and work fitness of this group of patients and on the relationship between tracheobronchial hyper-reactivity and physical stimulus in the development of AE. Intal action was more pronounced as compared to orciprenaline sulfate. The data thus obtained can promote the improvement of the activity of the medical expert commission for evaluation of working capacity as well as of the standards of work recommendations in BA patients.

[Characteristics of the development of emotional stress in persons with different levels of physical fitness].

Emotional stress is one of the most important problems. Until now scientists can't determine a norm of physical state which is characteristic of human stress resistance in the extreme conditions. The study is designed to analyze the dependence of stress resistance in young males on their physical fitness. Physical capacity for work has been established in young males aged 17-24 by means of PWC170 test. Modelling of the novelty with an element of personal risk has been carried out for the complex study of emotional stress. During the first appearance of those under experiment on the beam placed at the height of 10 m, the changes occurring in their omega-potential, vegetative indices according to heart rhythm and arterial pressure were investigated. Predominance of parasympathetic regulation and higher values of omega-potential in persons with general physical capacity for work of 18 kg.m/min.kg and higher were set forth. They could indicate their higher stress resistance and psychic capacity for work.

[Adaptation of construction workers to regular and increased occupational work loads].

Indicators of functional body stress of builders do not exceed normal physiologic reactions to work and are proportional to the work load. The values of the functional state strictly correspond to the work power, the level of professional skill, the degree of workers' adaptation and physical fitness to industrial conditions and work load. A certain reserve of body functional capacities has been underlined.
