[Primary sarcoma of the spleen].

Four cases of sarcoma of the spleen, two fibrosarcomas and two malignant haemangioendotheliomas (mHE), are described. They correspond to an frequency of 0.08% of the post-mortem material. Malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the spleen have not been considered. There are distinct differences between fibrosarcomas and mHE with respect to macroscopic appearance, behavior and formation of metastases. Differential diagnostic problems in the histologic assessment of mHE are discussed.

Lymphosarcoma in a cat.

Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) antigen was detected in a cat from Cape Town which was subjected to euthanasia after a long history of upper respiratory infection and progressive emaciation. Based on the necropsy findings and subsequent histopathological examinations, a diagnosis of lymphosarcoma was made. It is regarded as likely that this tumour was caused by infection with FeLV.

Pulmonary haemangiopericytoma with multiple metastases.

A case of primary pulmonary haemangiopericytoma with hundreds of nodular pulmonary, liver, lymph node, spleen, kidney and subcutaneous metastases is presented. Even if multiple metastases in the lungs from haemangiopericytoma are extremely rare, this possibility should be remembered in differential diagnosis.

[Malignant histiocytosis. Report of a case].

A case of malignant histiocytosis in a man of 32 is described. The diseases had a rapid course, showed marked signs of intoxication, generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, jaundice, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia. Specific infiltration with atypic histiocytes with phagocytosis of erythrocytes and their debris, leukocytes, and lipids was found in the lymph nodes, skin, bone marrow, liver, kidneys, heart muscle, and along the lung blood vessels. The final diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis is established by histological examination of the affected tissues (most frequently, lymph nodes).

Pathologic rupture of the spleen in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Pathologic rupture of the spleen was the signal event in the onset of diffuse histiocytic lymphoma in a young woman. The diagnosis of lymphoma was established only after one month of observation. In a review of clinical features of ten patients with pathologic rupture of the spleen due to lymphoma, spleen size was variable, and in four of ten patients a diagnosis of lymphoma had not been suspected previously. In addition to the patient described herein, only two of those previously described survived splenic rupture.

[Distribution of lung cancer metastases. I. Combination and frequency of organ metastases].

The distribution of metastatic tumors of 935 lung cancers with blood borne metastases has been analysed. The frequency of affected organs decreased in the following sequence: liver, bone, adrenal, brain, lung, kidney, thyroid gland, pancreas, spleen and heart. In cases with only one metastatic affected organ the frequency of brain and lung metastases is greater than the frequency of liver, bone and adrenal metastases. Especially in cases with two different affected organs the pair combination of liver and bone metastases as well as of brain and adrenal metastases is evident, however, combined brain and bone metastases and brain and liver metastases rarely occur. The distinct pattern of metastatic distribution in the body supports the evidence of the "soil" hypothesis. Seldom affected organs rarely shows a strong metastatic involvement and go hand in hand with many other affected organs. In autopsies the duration of cancer disease is much longer in cases without metastasis or small metastatic involvement than in cases with many affected organs. Therefore, the generalization of metastatic spread mainly depends on the malignancy of tumors and to a less extent on the duration of cancer disease.

[Epidermoid cyst of the spleen with a picture of acute abdomen].

A case of epidermoid cyst of the spleen in an 8-yr-old boy presented as acute abdomen secondary to rupture of the cyst. The lesion is classified and the relevant literature surveyed. Particular reference is made to the pathogenetic mechanism responsible for the picture of acute abdomen.

Malignant proliferating angioendotheliomatosis.

A 48-year-old man had fever and generalized asymptomatic erythematous telangiectatic plaques and patches. Skin biopsy specimens confirmed the diagnosis of malignant angioendotheliomatosis. Local irradiation therapy induced a temporary remission. Chemotherapy was administered without altering the course of the disorder. Limited autopsy revealed visceral as well as cutaneous involvement.

Growth of leukemias and lymphoid tumors in solid organs: demonstration of multiphasic proliferative activity.

Tumors derived from lymphocytes, i.e., leukemias and lymphomas, generally grow diffusely in blood and bone marrow in the natural situation. However, they can also grow in "pseudo-solid" form in solid organs such as the liver, spleen and lymph nodes where the organs' capsule becomes a limiting barrier. We have studied tumor growth in these latter situations, i.e., in liver and spleen, tracing the tumor growth process by mass changes, protein, DNA and RNA content changes. We have also studied DNA-S activity by determining uptake of H3-TdR into DNA. These show that after large cell doses, i.e., 1 x 10(6) cells, a single sustained burst of DNA-S activity occurred and terminated with host death. With smaller cell doses, i.e., 1 x 10(4) cells, where a more prolonged growth period occurred, multiphasic growth was observed, i.e., a period of high DNA-S activity during a "silent" period where no organ growth was observed. A separate burst of DNA-S activity occurred with a delayed rapid organ increase phase. With it, organ enlargement and cell proliferation was marked, i.e., 2-8 fold, and ended with host death. It appears that a normal mechanism of organ enlargement by capsular relaxation allowed further tumor cell proliferation to occur.

Metastatic extramedullary plasmacytoma of the colon and rectum in a dog.

Stage-3 extramedullary plasmacytoma of the large intestine was diagnosed in an 8-year-old Labrador Retriever. Three primary tumors were located in the colon and rectum, with metastasis to local lymph nodes and the spleen. The disease was associated with a monoclonal serum protein spike identified as IgG. Treatment consisted of surgical excision followed by chemotherapy, using melphalan and prednisone. The dog remained free from clinical signs of disease and adverse effects of the chemotherapy at 9 months. Findings in this dog indicated that extramedullary plasmacytoma may be an aggressive disease, associated with spread to distant sites and monoclonal gammopathy.

Natural history of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin: case report.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant proliferation of the epidermal keratinocyte. With early recognition and treatment, most of these tumors have a favorable prognosis. If the lesions are left untreated, however, the results may prove fatal. We describe a case of long-standing neglect of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma leading to widely metastatic disease in a 69-year-old man.
