[4 years' experience with use of the "Ambulancia, Oddelenie, Sklad" software made by Softprogress Piestany installed on the local computer network in the Ophthalmology Department of the Trnava Hospital].

The authors give information about their positive and negative experience at using computers connected to local network in ophthalmology department. They put the stress on a need to respect the requirements on hygiene of work at the beginning of the process of planning of suitable hardware choice software and workplace equipment. The need of sufficient number of workplace-terminals and software choice are considered to be necessary and the latter one allows a complex data processing and forming of the common database of patients for outpatient department, department and storage files. They refer to risks of local network switching over with other workplaces and possibility of undesirable information escapes and virus penetration into the network.

An integrated multimedia medical information network system.

An integrated multimedia medical information network system at Shimane Medical university has been developed to organize medical information generated from each section and provide information services useful for education, research and clinical practice. The report describes the outline of our system. It is designed to serve as a distributed database for electronic medical records and images. We are developing the MML engine that is to be linked to the world wide web (WWW) network system. To the users, this system will present an integrated multimedia representation of the patient records, providing access to both the image and text-based data required for an effective clinical decision making and medical education.

Synapse Health Resources Online.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center maintains the Synapse Health Information Network to provide timely clinical and library resource information to health professionals across Nebraska and surrounding regions. The system is in over 115 sites across Nebraska and surrounding regions and maintains over 320 network users.

The networking between hospital and health centre.

Health care providers, purchasers, and insurers try to manage the costs while maintaining the quality of the care. In the Hospital District of Central Finland we based our plans on the following values: life worth living, justice, truth, responsibility, equality, relationship, and commitment. Most of these values mean responsibility for the patient. At the same time they tell of the ethical basis of our regional networking between hospitals and health centres.

Otolaryngology and the Internet.

During the past 25 years, the Internet has grown tremendously. Starting as four academic computers linked by the Department of Defense, it has become a major technical and cultural entity that is accessible to millions of persons outside the realm of government and academia. The field of medicine has been well served by this telecommunications system, in which many applications have been developed to assist in research, clinical medicine, and education. More recently, resources of specific interest to otolaryngologists have been implemented at various academic departments and national organizations. This review is intended to simplify the Internet for otolaryngologists who do not have extensive experience in computers or telecommunication. The Internet is described in basic, minimally technical terms, and specific examples are provided of ways that on-line resources can be used in the practice of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.
