[Control of labor in swine with dexamethasone of various injection frequencies on the onset of labor and other selected parameters in farrowing sows and piglets].

Included in experiments with 185 sows with synchronised oestrus and ovulation were 52 untreated animals (K), while the others received intramuscular injections of daily doses of 75 mg of dexamethasone (DXMS), between the 109th and 111th days of pregnancy (V1) or 200 mg on the 110th day (V2) or on the 111th day (V3). While DXMS failed to have any substantive effect on mean pregnancy time or duration of labour, the variance of farrowing dates was reduced with significance. The average intervals which passed from the injections to delivery were 58.8 hours (V1), 82.2 hours (V2) or 54.8 hours (V3). No major difference was found to exist between K, V1, V2, and V3 regarding stillbirths or piglets with underweight, weights at birth and on the 21st day of age, loss in the course of raising, and percentual frequency of sows with normal or increased rectal temperature during the first three days after farrowing.

[The preliminary stage of labor in cattle in relation to the clinical signs of labor and the course of progesterone secretion for the prediction of the calving time].

To evaluate changes in the externally recognizable indications of parturition, the body temperature and progesteroneprofile were examined in 9 Holstein-Friesian heifers and 14 Holstein-Friesian cows in the preparatory phase of parturition. A special external obstetric examination was performed on these animals in the last 263 hours of pregnancy. Furthermore, the vaginal and rectal temperature was measured, and blood samples were taken. Of the blood samples the plasma progesterone concentration was determined. The time of birth could be predicted to be in the next 22 hours on the basis of the relaxation of the broad pelvic ligaments in 52.5% of the cases. A prediction was possible in 43.5% of the cases on the basis of the drop in temperature, and in 91.3% of the animals using the reduction in progesterone levels. Considering the clinical signs of parturition "relaxation of the pelvic ligaments" and a "decrease in temperature", predicting the time of parturition was possible in 65.2% of the animals. In 8.7% of the cases, in which no reduction in the progesterone level below 1.5 ng/ml blood plasma could be seen, the time of delivery could be determined by considering the relaxation of the broad ligaments and the reduction in temperature. A prediction of the time of parturition to be in the next 22 hours was possible for all animals the indicators of parturition.

[Relationship between premature labor and maternal age, as well as between premature labor and parity].

Various publications of the last years and own studies, too demonstrate that birth rank and maternal age, as well, in each case independently influence the risk of prematurity. The rate of prematurity for primiparous and multiparous women is above the average; it is just the same for very young and comparatively old women. Basing on a review of literature eventual causes are briefly discussed.

[Is premature labor weather-dependent? Correlation of premature labor with meteorologic data].

A preselected cluster of births (12351-4719 = 7632 = n) which was divided into 3 groups (delivery between 28-32 gestational weeks, 33-37 gestational weeks and > 37 gestational weeks) has been correlated with six major weather situations of the four meteorologically defined seasons. The correlation was made with the date of birth and with one day as well as two days before. The duration of pregnancy was longer by an average of 0.45 weeks (i.e. 3 days) when the major weather situation did not change for more than 8 days. The group with delivery 28-32 weeks is more sensitive to meteorological influences than the group with delivery 33-37 weeks. During cyclonic as well as during anticyclonic atmospheric drifts the groups 28-33 wks and 33-37 wks have been statistically over-represented. As far as the season is concerned over-representation is found in autumn. We conclude that pregnancies at risk of premature delivery should be followed up in short intervals during cyclonic and anticyclonic atmospheric drifts especially during the autumn season.
