Living in limbo: psychosocial intervention in families with a cancer patient.

Modern medical practice has changed cancer from an acute to a chronic catastrophe. The family system of a cancer patient moves therefore into a state of a "limbo" where interactions, plans, and socioeconomic realities are continually imbalanced and ever-changing. Family coping styles are examined; therapists' strategies and pitfalls are delineated.

A mobile crisis unit in the psychiatric emergency room.

A mobile psychiatric crisis intervention service based in the emergency room of a county receiving hospital sends teams into the community to screen and treat patients in crisis. The teams have been able to treat 70 percent of the patients seen in the community without hospitalization. Two-thirds of those hospitalized are admitted to nonpublic community hospitals, thus relieving the load on public institutions. To augment their work with patients, the teams employ a multisystems approach to treatment that attempts to identify and resolve problems not only within the patient's family, but also with the referring therapist and agency, and even with the crisis intervention service itself. The service has ensured its survival by paying close attention to the needs of its sponsoring institutions.

John Bowlby and Margaret s. Mahler: their lives and theories.

Traumatic aspects of the lives of John Bowlby and Margaret Mahler can be seen to inform their intellectual careers, a perspective that suggests that attachment theory and separation-individuation theory are far more consonant with one another than otherwise. Articulating the domains of convergence between the two theories reveals the essential complementarity of the special strengths of each. Both theories were attempts to understand the role of experience in the development of mental representations. Mahler paid close clinical attention to inner mental states and their evolution, while Bowlby searched for behavioral correlates that could lend themselves to empirical observation and inferences about internal representations.

Student nurses' perceptions of alternative and allopathic medicine.

This exploratory study of student nurses is based on the results of the responses to one question on an open-ended questionnaire: How would you define the relationship between alternative medicine and allopathic (conventional) medicine? A specific goal of the study was to find out how the surveyed respondents conceptualized the relationship between allopathic and alternative medicine. Three themes were identified: (a) "They are not at all alike," (b) "The two can or should be used together," and (c) "Those who practice alternative medicine and those who practice allopathic do not get along very well." The discussion suggests some reasons for these perceptions and considers some implications for future health care.
