Ulnar and tibial bending stiffness as an index of bone strength in synchronized swimmers and gymnasts.

The purpose of this study is to compare a mechanical property of bone in world-class female athletes with different loading histories. Bone bending stiffness or EI (E is the modulus of elasticity and I, the moment of inertia) was measured noninvasively with the mechanical response tissue analyzer, that analyzes the response of bone to a vibratory stimulus. We evaluated the ulna, ulnar width, wrist density and tibia in 13 synchronized swimmers (SYN), eight gymnasts (GYM) and 16 untrained women (UNT) of similar age. Muscle strength in the flexors and extensors at elbows and knees was measured in the athletes. SYN were taller than GYM or UNT (168 +/- 0.7 vs. 152 +/- 1.1 or 157 +/- 1.2 cm, P < 0.01). Ulnar EI, Nm(2), was similar in SYN and GYM (41 +/- 5.4 vs. 42 +/- 4.2, NS) and 50% higher than in UNT (27 +/- 2.1, P < 0.05). Ulnar EI, Nm(2) was related to ulnar width (r = 0.497, P < 0.002, n = 37) but not to wrist density. Tibial EI, Nm(2), in SYN and GYM (270 +/- 42 vs. 285 +/- 49, NS) was similar and more than twice as high as in UNT (119 +/- 6; p < 0.05). Knee flexor strength measured at 60 degrees s(-1) and elbow extensor strength at 200 degrees s(-1) correlated with tibial EI (r = 0.44 and 0.41, P < 0.05). In spite of different loading histories, the tibiae and ulnas of world-class athletes showed similar high values for bending stiffness that exceeded values in untrained women. EI in the ulna could be related to bone width and in the tibia, to muscle strength.

Gymnasterkoreaynes A-F, cytotoxic polyacetylenes from Gymnaster koraiensis.

Six new polyacetylenes, gymnasterkoreaynes A-F (1-6), were isolated from the roots of Gymnaster koraiensis, together with 2,9,16-heptadecatrien-4,6-diyn-8-ol (7) and 1,9,16-heptadecatriene-4,6-diyn-3,8-diol (8), by bioassay-guided fractionation using the L1210 tumor cell line as a model for cytotoxicity. The structures of compounds 1-6 were established spectroscopically, which included 2D NMR experiments. Gymnasterkoreaynes A-F (1-6) are linear diacetylenes and are structurally related to falcarinol, panaxynol, panaxydiol, and panaxytriol. Of the compounds isolated, gymnasterkoreaynes B (2), C (3), F (6), and 1,9,16-heptadecatrien-4,6-diyn-3,8-diol (8) exhibited significant cytotoxicity against L1210 tumor cells with ED(50) values of 0.12-3.3 microg/mL.

Meralgia paraesthetica--a sports lesion in girl gymnasts.

Investigation into thigh pain in two girl gymnasts has established the likely relationship between the point of impact on the thighs during exercises on the asymmetric bars and mild neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaenous nerve. The clinical and biomechanical steps taken to elucidate the problem are described. Local infiltration of anaesthetic has confirmed a definitive diagnosis of meralgia paraesthetica in one case.

Polyacetylene glycosides from Gymnaster koraiensis.

Two polyacetylene glycosides, gymnasterkoreasides A and B, were isolated from the roots of Gymnaster koraiensis. Their structures were elucidated to be (3R)-8-decene-4,6-diyne-1,3-diol 1-O-beta-D-glucopyraside and (3R)-8-decene-4,6-diyne-1,3-diol 1-O-beta-D-apiofuranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyraside on the basis of spectroscopic analysis including COSY, HMQC, and HMBC experiments, as well as chemical methods, which confirmed the determination of a chiral center by the modified Mosher's method.

Gymnasterkoreayne G, a new inhibitory polyacetylene against NFAT transcription factor from Gymnaster koraiensis.

A new polyacetylene, gymnasterkoreayne G (1) and seven known (2--8) constituents were isolated from the leaves of Gymnaster koraiensis. Base on extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data, the structure of the new compound was identified as erythro-8(S)-9(Z),16-heptadecadiene-4,6-diyne-2,3,8-triol. Isolated compounds were evaluated for their ability to inhibit NFAT transcription factor. While other components did not show activity, most of polyacetylene components markedly inhibit NFAT transcription factor. Of these compounds, gymnasterkoreayne B (3) was the most potent (IC(50) 1.44+/-0.59 microM). In term of the isomers, compound 1 (IC(50) 43.9+/-2.24 microM) with an erythro-configuration showed less inhibition than 2 (IC(50) 7.24+/-0.42 microM) with a threo-configuration.

Influence of performance setting, experience and difficulty of routine on precompetition anxiety and self-confidence of high school female gymnasts.

This study examined changes in cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and self-confidence as measured by the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 in a sample of 50 female high school gymnasts prior to their performances at a practice session, dual meet, and district championship meet. The purpose of the study was to examine (1) the relationship between state anxiety and performance setting, (2) experience, and (3) difficulty of the movement task. Analysis showed that at the dual meet athletes experienced significantly greater cognitive and somatic anxiety and lower self-confidence than at the practice or district championship. State anxiety did not vary significantly with the athletes' over-all experience or the difficulty of the routines they performed. The unexpected finding that the dual meet was the most anxiety-provoking was attributed to the greater uncertainty of outcome in a competition and the fact that the dual meet occurred early in the season.

[Ambulatory physical therapy rehabilitation with interval walking-gymnastics therapy in patients with chronic peripheral arterial occlusive disease].

A ambulatory physical therapeutic rehabilitation by means of interval-run-gymnastic-therapy was examined by a prospective study of 43 patients with peripheral arterial disease of the legs and was estimated as practicable. Improvements of walk distance, lengthenings of the pain times in the standardized move up and down-test, decreases of the blood-pressure gradients by ultrasonic Doppler measurements, shortenings of the half-life periods of xenon-clearance, improvements of the metabolism of lactate, improvements of the parameter of metabolism of lipids and uric acid were proved. Successes of therapy were not proved by oscillography and venous occlusion plethysmography. The expense was registered by the loss of working time and discussed.

[Postural drainage and breathing gymnastics--conditiones sine qua non-before lung resections for bronchiectasis (author's transl)].

Report on 150 lung resections in 143 patients with bronchiectasis in the period of 1958-1974. The intensive preparation of the patients before surgery is of highest importance for a small risk and rare complications after operation. Postural drainage and breathing gymnastics are able to increase significantly FEV1 and VC and to reduce RV in the preoperative phase. The complication rate amounted to 8%, lethality after surgery to 1.3%.
