A military challenge to managing feminine and personal hygiene.

PURPOSE: To examine the personal remembrances of a group of military women concerning their experiences with hygiene issues during service in a hostile environment. DATA SOURCES: Verbatim transcripts of focused interviews from 33 women who had been deployed to combat or the field were subjected to content analysis. Questions related to the womens' experiences in cleansing the body, collecting menses waste, and protecting against genitourinary infection in a hostile environment. CONCLUSIONS: Management of personal hygiene needs was often difficult and consumed a great deal of time. Hygiene issues affected women's attitudes, practice, work, morale and coping. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: By understanding the hygiene needs and practices of military woman changes can be made that have the potential to affect health promotion and disease prevention strategies for all women.

Training in feminine skills in a male transsexual: a pre-operative procedure.

This case study describes an attempt to modify the sex-role behaviour of a male transsexual in accordance with the subject's preferred sexual identity. The patient was treated before sex-change surgery. Treatment consisted of a modified form of social skills training and comprised such techniques as modelling, behaviour rehearsal and videotape feedback and focused on female elements of behaviour. Behavioural observations and psychometric testing were carried out before and after treatment and indicated significant change. The results indicated that: (a) behavioural intervention facilitated adoption of a new sex role; (b) the techniques used were particularly useful in modifying sex role behaviour; (c) the adoption of a new sex role in line with preferred identity was successful in terms of patient satisfaction.

Activation of feminine sexual behavior in castrated male rats by intrahypothalamic implants of estradiol benzoate.

The effects of intracerebral estradiol benzoate (EB) implants upon lordosis behavior in castrated male rats were investigated. 27 guage EB-filled or Blank implants were placed unilaterally in either the preoptic area (POA) or the region of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH). When 0.5 microgram of EB was administered subcutaneously for eight days, males with EB implants had significantly higher lordosis quotients (LQ) than males with Blank implants. EB implants located in the region of the VMH were significantly more effective in stimulating lordosis responses than implants in the POA. These results indicate that, in male rats as in females, the VMH region is a primary site for the hormonal activation of lordosis behavior.

The femininization of the female oedipal complex, Part II: Aggression reconsidered.

This paper examines and explores the manifestations of aggressive impulses in the so-called female oedipal complex. The authors describe how competitive aggression on the part of young girls, seemingly missing in children's stories and myths, is unconsciously inhibited, disguised, or externalized. They report similar phenomena in women patients involved in triangular conflicts, and present a selected review of the literature on the inhibition of aggression within the female triangular situation. Stressing dynamic patterns in the object relationships in the female triangular situation, the authors offer a psychological explanation for this inhibition. They present clinical material to demonstrate how overt murderous and competitive aggression toward the mother appears after considerable analytic work. They conclude that girls and women frequently relinquish a sense of agency over both aggression and sexuality in dealing with triangular conflicts, to preserve a safe relationship with their mothers.
