Ferroelectric phase transition in individual single-crystalline BaTiO3 nanowires.

We report scanned probe characterizations of the ferroelectric phase transition in individual barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanowires. Variable-temperature electrostatic force microscopy is used to manipulate, image, and evaluate the diameter-dependent stability of ferroelectric polarizations. These measurements show that the ferroelectric phase transition temperature (TC) is depressed as the nanowire diameter (dnw) decreases, following a 1/dnw scaling. The diameter at which TC falls below room temperature is determined to be approximately 3 nm, and extrapolation of the data indicates that nanowires with dnw as small as 0.8 nm can support ferroelectricity at lower temperatures. We also present density functional theory (DFT) calculations of bare and molecule-covered BaTiO3 surfaces. These calculations indicate that ferroelectricity in nanowires is stabilized by molecular adsorbates such as OH and carboxylates. These adsorbates are found to passivate polarization charge more effectively than metallic electrodes, explaining the observed stability of ferroelectricity in small-diameter BaTiO3 nanowires.

[Diagnostic procedures in esophageal diseases].

The algorithms for diagnosis of esophageal diseases largely depend on the patient's symptoms. The most important diagnostic procedure is flexible upper gastrointestinal endoscopy which allows inspection and assessment of the entire esophagus with the possibility to take biopsies for histological examination. Radiographic tests are indicated for special indications only. Finally, the role of functional tests (manometry, 24-hour pH-metry) and their indications are discussed.

A perspective on the measurement of ADAMTS13 in thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura.

The recent discovery of the von Willebrand Factor (vWF) cleaving protease (ADAMTS13) and the association of its deficiency with thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) has generated both enormous interest and considerable confusion. Ultra large von Willebrand Factor (UL vWF) multimers are present in the plasmas of patients with chronic relapsing TTP in remission but disappear during an attack. This observation led to the recognition that UL vWF multimers precipitate the thrombotic occlusion of arterioles, a feature that characterizes TTP. Multiple mutations in ADAMTS13 are associated with congenital TTP and neutralizing autoantibodies have been demonstrated in the acquired TTP syndrome. Although a number of functional assays for this enzyme have been described, the more rigorously evaluated assays are difficult to perform outside a research laboratory. There is also an enduring uncertainty about the specificity of ADAMTS13 deficiency for the diagnosis of acquired TTP and a perception that the result does not alter patient management. The cloning of the ADAMTS13 gene has also raised the prospect of recombinant enzyme therapy for the treatment of TTP, and this has heightened the need for a simple assay. In this review, we evaluate the value of measuring this enzyme in the management of TTP.

Filler particle leachability of experimental dental composites.

We studied the effect of matrix selection, filler composition, and filler silanization on filler leachability after storage in distilled water or artificial saliva. We evaluated 2 matrix systems, 2 filler systems and 2 silane treatment procedures, combined into 8 different dental composite materials. A total of 128 batches were made, and 2 specimens per batch were prepared. Of these 2 specimens per batch, one was stored in distilled water and the other in artificial saliva, both at 37 degrees C. We transferred the specimens each 30th day during a 3-yr period to new vials containing either freshly distilled water or newly mixed artificial saliva and analyzed the solutions the specimens had been stored in regarding Si, Ba and Al concentrations. The analyses revealed that storage solution, filler composition, and total time in the storage solution had strong effects on leachability. The average monthly leakage of the three elements was linear with time and higher in the artificial saliva. The Ba-containing filler leached Si faster in artificial saliva than in distilled water, and roughly twice as much as the quartz filler. The storage effect approached an order of magnitude, while the filler effect was roughly a factor of two. Filler leaching was linear over time.

Clinical wear performance of eight experimental dental composites over three years determined by two measuring methods.

The effect of matrix selection, filler composition, filler silanization, operator variations, and test site (dental clinic) on the wear rate of eight composites were evaluated. The wear was measured on replicas using both a microscopic and a laser scanning measuring method. The average wear rate on contact-free surfaces was 9.2 +/- 4.2 microm/month with the microscopic measurement and 8.5 +/- 3.7 microm/ month with the laser scanner over the 36-month period. The urethane-based composites performed significantly better than those which were bisGMA-based. Restorations placed at one dental clinic showed significantly lower initial wear. There was also a significant difference between the operators that was most pronounced during the first 6 months. The other variable (filler composition and silane treatment) did not affect the wear rate significantly.

Impact strength of teeth restored by fragment-bonding.

The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the impact strength of anterior teeth that have been fractured and restored by bonding with a dentin-bonding agent and a composite resin. Twenty sheep central incisors were divided into two groups, 10 in each. One group (intact teeth) served as the control and the teeth in the other group were fractured and then bonded with a bonding agent and a low-viscous composite resin. The specimens were tested in a modified impact-testing machine (pendulum type). The mean impact strength of the intact teeth was 30.6 +/- 2.16 KJ/m2 and of the bonded teeth was 30.2 +/- 1.86 KJ/m2. Statistics revealed that the two means were not significantly different. The results related well with the fracture strength obtained by loading intact and bonded teeth at constant but low speed until fracture. It was concluded that bonding fragments to the remaining tooth structure may restore the tooth to its original strength, measured at modest velocities of the applied force. In other words, reattaching the original coronal fragment of traumatised fractured anterior teeth restored with One-Step dentin bonding system and AEliteflo composite resin would withstand a second trauma to the same extent as intact teeth.

Cloning and expression of an inwardly rectifying ATP-regulated potassium channel.

A complementary DNA encoding an ATP-regulated potassium channel has been isolated by expression cloning from rat kidney. The predicted 45K protein, which features two potential membrane-spanning helices and a proposed ATP-binding domain, represents a major departure from the basic structural design characteristic of voltage-gated and second messenger-gated ion channels. But the presence of an H5 region, which is likely to form the ion conduction pathway, indicates that the protein may share a common origin with voltage-gated potassium channel proteins.

The potential bronchodilator action of verapamil.

Although calcium antagonists such as verapamil are used primarily in cardiovascular disease, they appear to relax smooth muscle generally. Therefore, the possibility that verapamil might have bronchodilator properties was explored using the guinea-pig tracheal ring technique. Verapamil was found to produce considerable tracheal smooth muscle relaxation from a threshold concentration of 2 X 10(-7) M and with maximum effect at 10(-3) M. The responses to the contractile agonists histamine and prostaglandin F2 alpha and especially methacholine and serotonin were substantially reduced by prior administration of verapamil. Verapamil 2 X 10(-4) M was equally effective as isoprenaline 10(-8) M in producing 50% maximum direct relaxation but was more effective than isoprenaline as an antagonist of the contractile agonists, methacholine, histamine and serotonin, but not prostaglandin F2 alpha. Verapamil abolished the contractile responses to barium chloride. It is concluded that, although verapamil was not very potent as a direct bronchodilator, it could potentially be of prophylactic benefit in asthma because of its efficacy as an antagonist of common contractile agonists.

Potassium permeable channels in primary cultures of rabbit cortical collecting tubule.

Rabbit cortical collecting tubule (RCCT) primary cultures, were grown on permeable, collagen supports with 1.5 microM aldosterone. Single K+ permeable channels in principal cell apical membranes were examined. At applied patch pipette potential (Vapp) from -60 to +60 mV (cell interior with respect to pipette interior), outward currents (cell to pipette) with a unitary conductance of 8 to 10 pS were seen in cell-attached (N = 31) and excised inside-out (N = 15) patches. At resting membrane potential (Vapp = 0 mV), mean open probability (Po = 0.85 +/- 0.16) decreased by 50% with 0.75 mM luminal BaCl2 exposure. In cell-attached patches, a second type of outward current was seen only at extreme depolarization, Vapp greater than +80 mV (N = 9). Usually in the closed state (Po less than 0.0005) at no applied potential, Po for this 150 pS channel increased dramatically with depolarization and/or raising cytoplasmic Ca2+. With a calculated K+ equilibrium potential of -84 mV, excised patch reversal potentials were less than -50 mV for both the above channel types, indicating high selectivity for K+ over Na+. In cultures grown without aldosterone low conductance K+ channels were rarely observed, while mineralocorticoid status did not appear to affect high conductance K+ channel frequency. Finally, a 30 pS cation channel was found to be nonselective for K+ over Na+, and insensitive to voltage, intracellular Ca2+ or luminal Ba2+. We conclude that: 1) Principal cell apical membranes from aldosterone-stimulated, RCCT primary cultures contain (a) low conductance, Ba(2+)-inhibitable and (b) high conductance, Ca2+/voltage-dependent K+ channels; and c) nonselective cation channels. 2) The low conductance K+ channel may play an important physiologic role in native RCCT mineralocorticoid-controlled K+ secretion, while the latter two channels' functions are unknown, although similar channels have been suggested to play a role in cell volume regulation.

Large electric-field-induced strain in ferroelectric crystals by point-defect-mediated reversible domain switching.

Ferroelectric crystals are characterized by their asymmetric or polar structures. In an electric field, ions undergo asymmetric displacement and result in a small change in crystal dimension, which is proportional to the applied field. Such electric-field-induced strain (or piezoelectricity) has found extensive applications in actuators and sensors. However, the effect is generally very small and thus limits its usefulness. Here I show that with a different mechanism, an aged BaTiO(3) single crystal can generate a large recoverable nonlinear strain of 0.75% at a low field of 200 V mm(-1). At the same field this value is about 40 times higher than piezoelectric Pb(Zr, Ti)O(3) (PZT) ceramics and more than 10 times higher than the high-strain Pb(Zn(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3)-PbTiO(3) (PZN-PT) single crystals. This large electro-strain stems from an unusual reversible domain switching (most importantly the switching of non-180 degrees domains) in which the restoring force is provided by a general symmetry-conforming property of point defects. This mechanism provides a general method to achieve large electro-strain effect in a wide range of ferroelectric systems and the effect may lead to novel applications in ultra-large stroke and nonlinear actuators.

Domain-wall superconductivity in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids.

Superconductivity and magnetism are two antagonistic cooperative phenomena, and the intriguing problem of their coexistence has been studied for several decades. Recently, artificial hybrid superconductor-ferromagnet systems have been commonly used as model systems to reveal the interplay between competing superconducting and magnetic order parameters, and to verify the existence of new physical phenomena, including the predicted domain-wall superconductivity (DWS). Here we report the experimental observation of DWS in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids using a niobium film on a BaFe(12)O(19) single crystal. We found that the critical temperature T(c) of the superconductivity nucleation in niobium increases with increasing field until it reaches the saturation field of BaFe(12)O(19). In accordance with the field-shift of the maximum value of T(c), pronounced hysteresis effects have been found in resistive transitions. We argue that the compensation of the applied field by the stray fields of the magnetic domains as well as the change in the domain structure is responsible for the appearance of the DWS and the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism in the superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids.

Tectonic arrangement of BaCO3 nanocrystals into helices induced by a racemic block copolymer.

Morphosynthesis strategies inspired by biomineralization processes gives access to a wide range of fascinating and useful crystalline mesostructures. Biomimetic synthesis of inorganic materials with complex shapes can now be used to control the nucleation, tensorial growth, and alignment of inorganic crystals in a way previously not practicable. Double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) consisting of a hydrophilic block strongly interacting with inorganic minerals, and a non-interacting hydrophilic block, were recently introduced for the control of mineralization reactions. DHBCs are 'improved versions' of the previously used polyelectrolytes or amphiphiles and are extraordinarily effective in crystallization control. Here, we report on the formation of helices of achiral BaCO(3) nanocrystals in the presence of a racemic DHBC suggesting that a helical alignment can be induced by racemic polymers through selective adsorption on the (110) face of nanocrystals. This mechanism is the key for a better understanding of the self-assembly of chiral organic-inorganic superstructures that don't follow a direct template route.

A practical route for the fabrication of large single-crystal (RE)-Ba-Cu-O superconductors.

Single-crystal superconductors of the general formula (LRE)-Ba-Cu-O (light rare earth, LRE = Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd) have considerable potential for engineering applications because of their ability to trap magnetic fields significantly higher than those achievable with permanent magnets. But the lack of a process by which these materials can be fabricated reliably and economically in the form of large single grains has severely hindered their development. We report a practical processing method for the fabrication in air of single-crystal (RE)BCO. The technique is economical and offers considerable freedom in terms of the processing parameters and reproducibility in growth of oriented single grains. The process is based primarily on the development of a new type of generic seed crystal that can effectively promote the epitaxial nucleation of any (RE)BCO system, and secondly on suppressing the formation of RE-Ba solid solution in a controlled manner within large grains processed in air.

Electromagnetic, atomic structure and chemistry changes induced by Ca-doping of low-angle YBa2Cu3O7-delta grain boundaries.

Practical high-temperature superconductors must be textured to minimize the reduction of the critical current density J(gb) at misoriented grain boundaries. Partial substitution of Ca for Y in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) has shown significant improvement in J(gb) but the mechanisms are still not well understood. Here we report atomic-scale, structural and analytical electron microscopy combined with transport measurements on 7 degrees [001]-tilt Y(0.7)Ca(0.3)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) grain boundaries, where the dislocation cores are well separated. We show that the enhanced carrier density, higher J(gb) and weaker superconductivity depression at the Ca-doped boundary result from a strong, non-monotonic Ca segregation and structural rearrangements on a scale of approximately 1 nm near the dislocation cores. We propose a model of the formation of Ca(2+) solute atmospheres in the strain and electric fields of the grain boundary and show that Ca doping expands the dislocation cores yet enhances J(gb) by improving the screening and local hole concentration.

Direct measurement of triaxial strain fields around ferroelectric domains using X-ray microdiffraction.

Ferroelectric materials, such as BaTiO(3), have piezoelectric properties that make them attractive for microelectronic and sensing applications. It is well known that the application of mechanical stress or electric field can alter the domain structure in ferroelectrics. Indeed, the constitutive behaviour of a ferroelectric is largely governed by the formation, movement and interaction of its domains. Therefore, it is crucial that the micromechanics of domains and their effect on internal stresses in ferroelectrics be understood. Here we show that the emerging technique of scanning X-ray microdiffraction can be used to measure directly, for the first time, the local triaxial strain fields around 90 degrees domains in single-crystal BaTiO(3). Specifically, residual strain maps in a region surrounding an isolated, approximately 40 microm wide, 90 degrees domain were obtained with 3 microm resolution, revealing significant residual strains. This information is critical for accurate micromechanical modelling of domain behaviour in ferroelectrics.

The giant electrorheological effect in suspensions of nanoparticles.

Electrorheology (ER) denotes the control of a material's flow properties (rheology) through an electric field. We have fabricated electrorheological suspensions of coated nanoparticles that show electrically controllable liquid-solid transitions. The solid state can reach a yield strength of 130 kPa, breaking the theoretical upper bound on conventional ER static yield stress that is derived on the general assumption that the dielectric and conductive responses of the component materials are linear. In this giant electrorheological (GER) effect, the static yield stress displays near-linear dependence on the electric field, in contrast to the quadratic variation usually observed. Our GER suspensions show low current density over a wide temperature range of 10-120 degrees C, with a reversible response time of <10 ms. Finite-element simulations, based on the model of saturation surface polarization in the contact regions of neighbouring particles, yield predictions in excellent agreement with experiment.
