Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid.

The clinical and pathological features of two Merkel cell carcinomas of the eyelid skin are reported. Both tumours occurred in the upper lid in elderly women and enlarged rapidly to form smooth, round nodules which projected from the lid surface anterior to the grey line. In one case the primary excision biopsy was followed by a wider excision in 1982, and the patient has been free from recurrence or metastases in the intervening period. In the second more recent case, the tumour was inadequately excised in 1984 and the lid was treated by radiotherapy: this patient is at present free from recurrence. Histological examination of each tumour revealed an identical morphology - characterised by the presence of uniform polyhedral cells with multiple nucleoli lying in nests and lobules within the dermis: mitotic figures were prominent. Immunohistochemical studies showed the cells to react positively with antisera against neurone-specific enolase, epithelial membrane antigen and met-enkephalin. Electron microscopy revealed only rare neuroendocrine granules in one tumour, and numerous granules in the other. Intranuclear rodlets were not identified and there was paucity of cell membrane attachment modifications.

[Pit cells--a tissue form of large granule-containing lymphocytes with natural killer activity].

Basing on structural and functional signs, pit cells and large granule-containing lymphocytes (LGCL) can be considered as the same type of cells. LGCL take origin from bone marrow, circulate in the blood stream and get into tissues as pit cells or as interepitheliocytic lymphocytes. Therefore, on this ground for convenience of studying and understanding these elements of cell immunity a suggestion is made to distinguish the LGCL system, possessing natural killer activity and paracrinic secretion. An increased functional load to the organism results in an intensified getting of LGCL into places of structural reconstructions of tissues (regenerative active zones). The same effector elements--LGCL (pit cells)--in dependence of necessary functional ensuring under various conditions, produce in the surrounding parenchyma both a proliferative effect and its opposite action. The latter can be manifested as a monocellular colliquational necrosis, or as apoptosis. Apoptosis (active cellular death) is of greatest interest. Disturbances of this mechanism can facilitate to an excess proliferation of cells, or to their extreme death; malignant growth and transplant-versus-host reaction can be mentioned as examples, respectively. LGCL play an important role in the immunobiological supervision and are effectors of active ageing mechanisms. Studying of this important link in regulation of quantity of cell population adequate to functional load should help to purposively influence it for stimulating or repressing cell proliferation, depending on certain concrete purposes.

The effect of hypoxia on the number of amine-containing cells in the lung of the adult rat.

Adult rats of Wistar and Sprague Dawley strains were exposed to a 21-day period of hypoxia (10% O2). At the end of this period, the hypoxic animals and paired controls were anaesthetised, dissected and tissues were taken for light microscopy. All the hypoxic animals had an increased haematocrit, right ventricle weight and carotid body size when compared with controls. The Grimelius method was used to demonstrate argyrophil structures in the lung. This method stained the amine-containing cells of the epithelium, mast cells and nerves. Mast cells associated with the pulmonary vasculature were increased in number in the hypoxic animals. Single epithelial argyrophil cells were more frequent than those in groups. In control animals the groups of cells only rarely contained more than 5 cells. In the Wistar strain there was no significant difference in the number of argyrophil cells between the control animals and those exposed to chronic hypoxia. However, in the Sprague Dawley rats, the numbers of cells, both single and in groups, were significantly increased following 3 weeks chronic hypoxia. The cell groups were also larger in the hypoxic animals, with up to 12 cells per section.

[Morphological characteristics of mucinous cancer of the breast containing endocrine cells].

It was established that mucus-forming mammary gland carcinoma containing endocrine cells may have a structure of an ordinary colloid mammary gland carcinoma or carcinoid carcinoma with mucus formation. The presence of amyloid in the stroma of colloid carcinoma containing endocrine cells may serve as an additional sign of the endocrine cell differentiation. Simultaneous observation in the tumour cells of both mucous inclusions and endocrine granules may be regarded as a proof of an origin of epithelial and endocrine cells of the mammary gland from a pluripotent stem cell.

Ontogeny, distribution and amine/peptide content of chromogranin A- and B-immunoreactive endocrine cells in the small and large intestine of the chicken.

Chromogranin A-(CgA-) and chromogranin B-(CgB-)-immunoreactive endocrine cells were investigated in the chicken intestine during embryonic and post-hatching life. CgA- and CgB-immunoreactive cells first appeared in the intestinal tract at various embryonic ages from day 10 in the cloaca to day 16 in the distal ileum and colon. To identify the CgA- and CgB-immunoreactive cells, each tissue section was double-immunostained using a panel of polyclonal antibodies raised against gut amine/peptides. Almost all the serotonin-immunoreactive cells co-localised CgA and CgB along the entire intestinal mucosa and at all ages examined. In contrast, substance P-, peptide tyrosine tyrosine-, neurotensin- and secretin-immunoreactive cells displayed heterogeneous co-localisation patterns. For example, either all or only some cells of a given endocrine type co-stored Cg; they did so variously - only in the embryo, only after hatching, or at both stages, and co-localizing cells were sometimes located within the mucosa only in the villi and not in the glands, and sometimes vice versa. All the CgA/CgB-immunoreactive cells also displayed argyrophilia.

Immunocytochemical localization of neuroendocrine hormones and oncofetal antigens in ovarian teratomas.

The presence of neurohormonal peptides, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was evaluated using immunocytochemical techniques in 170 benign cystic teratomas and 19 solid teratomas. The latter ranged from grade 0 to 3. The presence of hCG, AFP, and CEA was associated with a high histological grade and may therefore play a role in the grading of solid teratomas. Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine cells frequently occurred in cystic teratomas without coexisting neural tissue. This finding is contrary to the neural crest origin previously suggested by other investigators and is in accordance with an endodermal origin of these cells.

[C-cell tumors of the thyroid gland].

Morphological description of 59 C-cell tumours of the thyroid gland is presented. The C-cell tumours are very variable both cytologically and histologically and include monomorphocellular, spindlecellular, and polymorphocellular variants. Grimelius and Sevier-Munger argirophilic reactions are most suitable for histological diagnosis of apudomas of the thyroid gland. The epithelial genesis of C-cell tumours of the thyroid gland is suggested.
