The influence of Genoa G8 events on people sexuality.

OBJECTIVES: Aim of the study is to verify if a stress reaction due to G8 meeting, held in Genoa on July 2001, can produce a mass stress reaction and influence negatively people sexuality and so the birth rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 402 citizens (221 men and 181 women ranging in age from 25 to 52 years, mean 39) have been invited to answer two questionnaires concerning their sexual activity and their feelings before, during and after the G8 meeting. After 9,10 and 11 months we have valued the birth rate in Genoa. RESULTS: 30 people (7%) did not answer the two questionnaires. 12 people (3%) answered the questionnaire wrongly and were excluded from the study. 228 people (63%) didn't report changes about their sexual activity, during G8 meeting. 120 people (33%) reported a decrease of sexual intercourses and of sexual desire; 12 people (4%) reported an increase of these parameters. 54% of our population reported a definite anxiety. We want to emphasize the high number of people that had anxiety even in the group that didn't report changes in sexual activity (105/228 = 46%). After 9, 10 and 11 months we have recorded a significant decrease of the birth rate respectively of 29%, 23%, 20%. (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Violent demonstrations during G8 meeting have negatively influenced people sexual activity and people behaviour. Besides, we have recorded a decrease of birth rate in Genoa, nine, ten and eleven months after G8. This decrease rate was respectively 29%-23%-20% as regards the same months during the three years before (P < 0.05). We cannot determine the real cause of this decrease. Violent G8 demonstrations could be responsible for a stress reaction with negative consequences on human reproductive functions.

[Luxation-fractures of the radiocarpal joint. Clinical study of 6 cases and general review].

The authors present a series of six cases of radio-carpal fracture-dislocation, which occurred between 1978 and 1989. The results were analysed with a follow-up of between 3 months and 11 years. This rare lesion (0.2% of all joint dislocations) is often caused by a severe injury, although the mechanism remains obscure. Radiological lesions consist of a combination of anterior or posterior carpal dislocation, fractures of the radial styloid and ulnar styloid processes, fracture of the anterior or posterior lip of the radius. This association of radiological lesion was also found in review of literature so that radio-carpal fracture-dislocation can be considered to be a real and a distinct entity. The authors recommend a surgical treatment, after immediate joint reduction, including stabilization with cancellous screw, sometimes Kirschner wires. However, anatomic reduction must be obtained, to ensure a good functional result.

[Ledderhose's disease. Report of 7 cases].

Ledderhose's syndrome, or plantar fibromatosis, is a rare fibrous dystrophy and the plantar equivalent of Dupuytren's disease. It occurs mainly in adult subjects, as a plantar fibrous nodule. The authors report 7 operated cases of Ledderhose's syndrome, including one in a 14-year-old adolescent. When the plantar nodule becomes symptomatic, surgery is the only means of treatment. Plantar aponeurotomy must then be as extensive as possible to prevent recurrent.

[Dentist's work at the treatment of maxillofacial injuries under extraordinary circumstances].

In the article the author describes the possibilities of dentist's work with maxillo-facially injured persons in cases of greater mass disasters as earth-quakes, floods, greater traffic accidents, and recently also the accidents at sports stadiums and demonstrations. Owing to extraordinary circumstances and a great number of injured people on a small place, and short time available, simple methods of temporary immobilisation are used, which are carried out from the place of the injury to the transport in a specialist institution, where the final specialist treatment begins. Some of these methods are described by the author.

Mary Reynolds: a post-traumatic reinterpretation of a classic case of multiple personality disorder.

In 1811 Mary Reynolds, a somber Pennsylvania spinster, awoke from a prolonged sleep as a new personality. Family memoirs describing her 18 years of shifts between two personalities shaped nineteenth century thinking about multiple personality disorder. As in other early case histories, no mention was made of childhood trauma, a factor found in 97% of contemporary cases. This discussion reviews genealogical and historical documents which suggest that Mary Reynolds did experience early trauma as a victim of religious persecution, which finally forced her family to leave Birmingham, England, when Mary was eight. Review of her illness indicates it may have functioned to eradicate memories of traumatic early experiences.

[A simple method for measuring anteversion of the acetabulum from a frontal radiograph of the hip].

A simple, reproducible and reliable method is proposed for measurement of cotyloid version. Using a standing frontal image of hip, the cotyloid borders are identified and a single-plane geometric projection determines the precise degree of version. This study can also be made from a conventional frontal pelvic image with bipodalic weight bearing. Knowledge of spatial orientation allows a better approach to head-cotyle biomechanical phenomena and thus improved understanding of the genesis of certain hip diseases.
