Staphylococcus aureus DNA ligase: characterization of its kinetics of catalysis and development of a high-throughput screening compatible chemiluminescent hybridization protection assay.

DNA ligases are key enzymes involved in the repair and replication of DNA. Prokaryotic DNA ligases uniquely use NAD+ as the adenylate donor during catalysis, whereas eukaryotic enzymes use ATP. This difference in substrate specificity makes the bacterial enzymes potential targets for therapeutic intervention. We have developed a homogeneous chemiluminescence-based hybridization protection assay for Staphylococcus aureus DNA ligase that uses novel acridinium ester technology and demonstrate that it is an alternative to the commonly used radiometric assays for ligases. The assay has been used to determine a number of kinetic constants for S. aureus DNA ligase catalysis. These included the K(m) values for NAD+ (2.75+/-0.1 microM) and the acridinium-ester-labelled DNA substrate (2.5+/-0.2 nM). A study of the pH-dependencies of kcat, K(m) and kcat/K(m) has revealed values of kinetically influential ionizations within the enzyme-substrate complexes (kcat) and free enzyme (kcat/K(m)). In each case, the curves were shown to be composed of one kinetically influential ionization, for k(cat), pK(a)=6.6+/-0.1 and kcat/K(m), pK(a)=7.1+/-0.1. Inhibition characteristics of the enzyme against two Escherichia coli DNA ligase inhibitors have also been determined with IC50 values for these being 3.30+/-0.86 microM for doxorubicin and 1.40+/-0.07 microM for chloroquine diphosphate. The assay has also been successfully miniaturized to a sufficiently low volume to allow it to be utilized in a high-throughput screen (384-well format; 20 microl reaction volume), enabling the assay to be used in screening campaigns against libraries of compounds to discover leads for further drug development.

Structure-function relationships in the cysteine proteinases actinidin, papain and papaya proteinase omega. Three-dimensional structure of papaya proteinase omega deduced by knowledge-based modelling and active-centre characteristics determined by two-hydronic-state reactivity probe kinetics and kinetics of catalysis.

1. A model of the three-dimensional structure of papaya proteinase omega, the most basic cysteine proteinase component of the latex of papaya (Carica papaya), was built from its amino acid sequence and the two currently known high-resolution crystal structures of the homologous enzymes papain (EC 3.4.22.2) and actinidin (EC 3.4.22.14). The method used a knowledge-based approach incorporated in the COMPOSER suite of programs and refinement by using the interactive graphics program FRODO on an Evans and Sutherland PS 390 and by energy minimization using the GROMOS program library. 2. Functional similarities and differences between the three cysteine proteinases revealed by analysis of pH-dependent kinetics of the acylation process of the catalytic act and of the reactions of the enzyme catalytic sites with substrate-derived 2-pyridyl disulphides as two-hydronic-state reactivity probes are reported and discussed in terms of the knowledge-based model. 3. To facilitate analysis of complex pH-dependent kinetic data, a multitasking application program (SKETCHER) for parameter estimation by interactive manipulation of calculated curves and a simple method of writing down pH-dependent kinetic equations for reactions involving any number of reactive hydronic states by using information matrices were developed. 4. Papaya proteinase omega differs from the other two enzymes in the ionization characteristics of the common (Cys)-SH/(His)-Im+H catalytic-site system and of the other acid/base groups that modulate thiol reactivity towards substrate-derived inhibitors and the acylation process of the catalytic act. The most marked difference in the Cys/His system is that the pKa for the loss of the ion-pair state to form -S-/-Im is 8.1-8.3 for papaya proteinase omega, whereas it is 9.5 for both actinidin and papain. Papaya proteinase omega is similar to actinidin in that it lacks the second catalytically influential group with pKa approx. 4 present in papain and possesses a catalytically influential group with pKa 5.5-6.0. 5. Papaya proteinase omega occupies an intermediate position between actinidin and papain in the sensitivity with which hydrophobic interaction in the S2 subsite is transmitted to produce changes in transition-state geometry in the catalytic site, a fact that may be linked with differences in specificity in P2-S2 interaction exhibited by the three enzymes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Evidence-based practice in mental health: practical weaknesses meet political strengths.

UNLABELLED: RATIONALE, AIMS, AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has given rise to evidence-based practice (EBP) in the field of mental health. EBP too is predicated on an evidence hierarchy and has the goal of using the "best evidence" (usually randomized controlled trials) to improve practice. EBP is increasingly influential in mental health care in the U.S. Growing numbers of researchers and public officials endorse its claims and pursue its benefits. The rationale for this paper is to examine the potential of EBP for the field of mental health-and public mental health care specifically. Is it likely to contribute to improved lives for mentally ill people? If so, how? METHODS: This qualitative study relies on archival, and to a much lesser extent, informant interview data. Informants were mostly public mental health officials because they are in a position to implement EBP on a large scale and their policies are a matter of public record. Interviews were semi-structured, held in person and on the telephone, and lasted one to two hours. Archival research included the substantial literature on EBM and EBP plus studies and articles on the practice and policy of U.S. public mental health care. RESULTS: The results of this study were that there exists an extensive, coherent literature critical of EBM and of EBP specifically. Attempts to implement EBP will falter on epistemological and organizational barriers. Still, as a public idea--that more science will bring about better mental health practice--EBP may well serve political purposes, especially in the U.S. public mental health system, where more overtly ideological policies have been inadequate in the past. EBP, as a public idea, has the advantage of ambiguity, accountability, quantifiability, etc. CONCLUSIONS: This paper concludes that EBP is growing more influential in public mental health care in the U.S. Its practical strengths, i.e., its improvement of mental health practice, may turn out to be less than its strengths as a public idea in the formulation and dissemination of mental health policy.

Effects of serine mutations in transmembrane domain 7 of the human norepinephrine transporter on substrate binding and transport.

Two serine residues in the beta-adrenergic receptor (beta-AR) have been proposed to form hydrogen bonds with the catechol moiety of the ligand and contribute to the activation of the receptor. These conserved serine residues in the dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine transporters (DAT and NET, respectively) have also been shown to affect substrate transport in the rat DAT. In the present work, hydrogen bonding interactions between the corresponding serine residues in the human NET (hNET), 354 and 357, and the hydroxyl groups on the substrate were systematically evaluated by examining the transport and binding properties of DA and several single hydroxyl analogues of DA at wild-type and serine-to-alanine-substituted transporters. A comparison of [3H]nisoxetine binding at the serine 354 mutant, in which K(D) increased 70-fold from the wild-type value, with the binding of DA, m-tyramine (m-TYR), and p-tyramine (p-TYR) at mutant 354, where the increase in Ki was less dramatic, revealed that serine 354 is more influential in inhibitor than substrate binding. The binding of m-TYR and p-TYR at the serine 354 and serine 357 mutants did not show a direct interaction between one serine and one substrate catechol hydroxyl group. DA, m-TYR, and p-TYR binding affinity did not deviate from the wild-type value at the serine 357 and double mutant transporters. At these two transporters, however, the Km of DA uptake increased, suggesting that the roles of serine 357 and serine 354 in substrate transport are different from their roles in binding. The K'm for induced efflux of DA decreased at the serine 357 mutant compared with the wild-type, whereas the K'm at the serine 354 mutant was the same as that of the wild-type. Further investigation of the role of substrate hydroxyls in the transport process revealed no difference between the transport of m-TYR or p-TYR, as measured indirectly through their induced efflux of DA, at any of the mutants. Although these serines are influential in inhibitor and substrate binding to the transporter and substrate uptake and efflux, they do not appear to be involved in a direct hydrogen bond interaction with substrate, suggesting that the pattern of distinct hydrogen bonding interactions at the beta-AR does not exist at the hNET.

Intention to breastfeed in low-income pregnant women: the role of social support and previous experience.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between breastfeeding intention among socioeconomically disadvantaged pregnant women and maternal demographics, previous breastfeeding experience, and social support. METHODS: A cross-sectional, convenience sampling strategy was employed for data collection. Low-income women (n = 1001) in a public hospital completed a six-page questionnaire about their infant feeding plans, demographics, and social support. Simple regression analyses were conducted to compare maternal breastfeeding intention with the hypothesized correlates. RESULTS: Breastfeeding intention was positively correlated with older maternal age, higher education, more breastfeeding experience, Hispanic ethnicity, and hearing about breastfeeding benefits from family members, the baby's father, and lactation consultants, but not from other health professionals. Health professionals' attitudes were less influential on women's infant feeding decisions than the attitudes and beliefs of members of women's social support networks. When controlling for breastfeeding experience (none vs any), some findings, varied, indicating a need for breastfeeding interventions tailored to women's level of experience. CONCLUSION: Use of peer counselors and lactation consultants, inclusion of a woman's family members in breastfeeding educational contacts, and creation of breastfeeding classes tailored to influential members of women's social support networks may improve breastfeeding rates among low-income women, especially those with no breastfeeding experience, more effectively than breastfeeding education to pregnant women that is solely conducted by health professionals.

Psychological sequelae and alopecia among women with cancer.

PURPOSE: This article reviews the relevant literature on treatment-induced alopecia in women with cancer and describes the development of a computer-assisted intervention to reduce distress associated with this side effect. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Alopecia has been cited as the most disturbing anticipated side effect by up to 58% of women preparing for chemotherapy, with 8% being at risk for avoiding treatment. Women with cancer who experience alopecia as a side effect, compared with women with cancer and no alopecia, report lower self-esteem, poorer body image, and lower quality of life. Although physicians' recommendations are the most influential factor on cancer treatment choice, body image and effects on sexuality are the next most influential factors. A study of a computer-imaging intervention, based on concepts related to guided imagery and anticipatory grief, has been launched in an effort to aid women in coping with anticipated treatment-related alopecia. RESULTS: While we are still waiting for final data collection and analysis from the computer intervention study, the feedback thus far has been positive. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The intervention described here may prove to be effective in desensitizing women with cancer to hair loss and facilitating an adjustment to self-acceptance. As such, a higher quality of life during the difficult time of coping may be maintained. The development of a computer-imaging intervention offers an opportunity to integrate a standard psychosocial intervention, personalized for each patient, into the routine patient care in the oncology setting.

A comparison of physicians' and patients' attitudes toward pharmaceutical industry gifts.

OBJECTIVE: To compare physicians' and their patients' attitudes toward pharmaceutical gifts. DESIGN: Survey of physicians and their patients. SETTING: Two tertiary-care medical centers, one military and one civilian. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred sixty-eight of 392 consecutively surveyed physicians, 100 of 103 randomly selected patients at the military center, and 96 patients in a convenience sample at the civilian center completed the survey. MEASUREMENTS: Participants rated 10 pharmaceutical gifts on whether they were appropriate for physicians to accept and whether they were likely to influence prescribing. Patients found gifts less appropriate and more influential than did their physicians. About half of the patients were aware of such gifts; of those unaware, 24% responded that this knowledge altered their perception of the medical profession. Asked whether they thought their own physician accepted gifts, 27% said yes, 20% no, and 53% were unsure. For patients, feeling that gifts were inappropriate was best predicted by a belief that gifts might influence prescribing, while for physicians, the best predictor was knowledge of guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: Patients feel pharmaceutical gifts are more influential and less appropriate than do their physicians. Physicians may want to consider this in deciding whether to accept particular gifts. Broader dissemination of guidelines may be one means of changing physician behavior. At the same time, future guidelines should further consider the potentially different viewpoints of patients and physicians.

Do women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and consulting surgeon assess decision-making equally?

This study assesses the perception of the decision-making process of 25 surgeons and 194 patients (aged 21-81 years) who had newly diagnosed breast cancer and had to undergo mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery (BCS). The majority of women wanted to participate in decision-making. When it was medically possible to give a choice between BCS and mastectomy, only 59% of women received a choice. The main reason that 11% of the women went against surgeon's recommendations was fear of cancer recurrence. The most influential factors for women were the surgeon's recommendation, and fear of cancer recurrence. Medical assessment and the cosmetic result were the most influential factors for the surgeons. Female surgeons were more influenced by their assessment of the women's need for security, than male. In conclusion, not all women who are eligible for BCS receive an option. Women and surgeons emphasize influencing factors differently. The surgeon's gender was found to influence recommendation given.

[The concept of hyperthymia].

The article reviews the conceptual history of "hyperthymia". Since K. W. Stark had used this term in the early 19(th) century, it has developed in two different directions: (1) to delineate a psychopathological syndrome and (2) to define a type of personality disorder (psychopathy). As Kurt Schneider's personality disorder (psychopathy) concept was easily understood and highly practicable, it became influential during the 20(th) century. Earlier before, psychiatrists such as E. Mendel, C. Wernicke and C. G. Jung had described entities such as "chronic mania", "hypomania" or "sanguinic degeneration", which were rather similar to each other. We analyze the historical development of such concepts. Emil Kraepelin was highly influential, as he introduced "constitutional excitation" into a broad concept of manic-depressive illness and saw it as a very mild form. After Kraepelin such spectrum concept was first forgotten. Only in recent years these historical considerations were confirmed by empirical observations, although a separate hyperthymic disorder is neither part of DSM-IV nor ICD-10. The concept of a hyperthymic temperament or a hyperthymic personality is a trait-marker and should be differentiated from hypomania as a state-marker. Nowadays, the importance of hyperthymia is not so much one of a disorder requiring treatment; rather the concept has interesting genetic, diagnostic and conceptual consequences.

[Ranking of pelvic lymphadenectomy in therapy and prognosis of carcinoma of the bladder].

PURPOSE: Due to the absence of internationally recognised guidelines on the necessary extent of lymphatic node removal in carcinoma of the bladder, we are still not sure as to which procedure is most favourable to therapeutic success. Hence, we checked retrospectively on the influence exercised by radical surgery on prognosis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 506 patients were analysed retrospectively after radical cystectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy with regard to the influence exercised on prognosis by clinical and histopathological variables. RESULTS: Statistically significant influential factors in univariate analysis were in the retrospective examination: the pT category (p < 0.0001), lymphatic node status (p < 0.0001), grading (p = 0.0145), proof of uronephrosis (p = 0.0007), number of performed transurethral resections (p = 0.0043), surgeon (p = 0.0033) and number of resected lymph nodes (p = 0.0012). There was a significant difference between surgeons at a median number of 14.3 removed lymphatic nodes (range 1 - 46) in respect of radicality (p = 0.001) and prognosis (p < 0.0049). Independent influential factors in multivariate analysis were: pT category (p = 0.003), pN category (p < 0.001) and the number of surgically removed lymphatic nodes (p = 0.038). CONCLUSION: In our retrospectively examined group of patients extensive lymphadenectomy significantly improved the prognosis and was thus a potentially curative procedure. Basing on these results, prospective studies will have to clarify the level of the standard applicable to pelvic lymphadenectomy and also the advantages and prospects of radical surgery in respect of possible patient survival.

[From the person to an isolated case: Frank Schmökel in the discourses of power and stigmatization].

OBJECTIVE: Representations of psychiatry in the media reflect the societal perception of psychiatries. These representations are influential in terms of society and health politics in that the societal perception of psychiatry is determined by the media, and the media convey what is thinkable and sayable. METHOD: A formal textual analysis, employing a discoursive analytical method (M. Foucault), will be carried out based on the concrete example of the daily coverage of the case of Frank Schmökel. RESULTS: It will be demonstrated that the means by which the media sketched an image of Frank Schmökel left little understanding for the person and his action. Schmökel was exposed to a sphere of control which arose from various competing discourses. The crystallization of the participating discourses (psychiatry, law, publicity) in power shows, in addition to repeated stigmatization and the generation of clichés, the isolation of the individual: the person Frank Schmökel is made into an isolated case. CONCLUSIONS: Images of this type are quickly generalized and lead to a public image of psychiatry (psychiatries) that distort reality. Such conveyance of opinion is amazingly influential in terms of societal politics and health politics, and has repercussions in law and politics.

Depth judgments of triangular surfaces during moving monocular viewing.

When an observer judges the orientation in depth of a trapezoidal surface, the pictorial information of the surface is often more influential than motion information. Motion information might be more effective if pictorial information is simplified: this prompts the present study. Surfaces were triangular and pictorial information resided only in the visual lengths of the surfaces. In experiment 1, monocular observers viewed during head motions of 0 to 30 cm extent. Static judgments were somewhat dependent on visual length and tended to be frontal. Contrary to predictions, moving judgments were similarly affected: only 30 cm motion elicited near-veridical perception, as in previous studies with trapezoidal surfaces, although visual length had a residual effect. Experiment 2 involved investigation of whether visual length requires prior exposure to triangular surfaces to be effective; this was found not to be the case, which argues that observers rely on internal models of triangular surfaces. Depth perception appears to balance rapidity of processing against accuracy, in a way suggesting that 'direct' approaches are incomplete. Finally, it is argued that depth-from-motion simulations-influential in assertions that motion information is fully effective-depend on pictorial information.

Organ-delimited gene regulatory networks provide high accuracy in candidate transcription factor selection across diverse processes.

Organ-specific gene expression datasets that include hundreds to thousands of experiments allow the reconstruction of organ-level gene regulatory networks (GRNs). However, creating such datasets is greatly hampered by the requirements of extensive and tedious manual curation. Here, we trained a supervised classification model that can accurately classify the organ-of-origin for a plant transcriptome. This K-Nearest Neighbor-based multiclass classifier was used to create organ-specific gene expression datasets for the leaf, root, shoot, flower, and seed in Arabidopsis thaliana. A GRN inference approach was used to determine the: i. influential transcription factors (TFs) in each organ and, ii. most influential TFs for specific biological processes in that organ. These genome-wide, organ-delimited GRNs (OD-GRNs), recalled many known regulators of organ development and processes operating in those organs. Importantly, many previously unknown TF regulators were uncovered as potential regulators of these processes. As a proof-of-concept, we focused on experimentally validating the predicted TF regulators of lipid biosynthesis in seeds, an important food and biofuel trait. Of the top 20 predicted TFs, eight are known regulators of seed oil content, e.g., WRI1, LEC1, FUS3. Importantly, we validated our prediction of MybS2, TGA4, SPL12, AGL18, and DiV2 as regulators of seed lipid biosynthesis. We elucidated the molecular mechanism of MybS2 and show that it induces purple acid phosphatase family genes and lipid synthesis genes to enhance seed lipid content. This general approach has the potential to be extended to any species with sufficiently large gene expression datasets to find unique regulators of any trait-of-interest.

A simple steady state model of the distribution of vertical temperature in broiler houses without internal air circulation.

1. The vertical temperature profile in a broiler house depends on several factors: ground temperature, heat production by the birds, heating of litter by resting birds, stratification and radiation, microbial heat production in the litter, moisture loss from litter and natural convection around the birds. The effect on the vertical temperature profile is calculated for each factor and the effects are finally combined to estimate vertical temperature distribution. 2. The vertical temperature profile in a commercial broiler house depends on the age of the birds. Influential factors for young broilers are ground temperature and stratification. For older broilers, influential factors are floor construction and ground-water table, heat production of broilers and litter, the behaviour of the broilers and air circulation in the house. 3. Temperatures in the living zone can differ appreciably, by a maximum of about 4 degrees C, from mean house temperature. 4. The velocity of air induced by the heat production of the broilers is about 5 cm/s. This provides good air mixing in the living zone.

Nurses' assessments and management of pain in children having orthopedic surgery.

The specific aims of this research project were to (a) describe selected verbal, nonverbal, and physiological arousal indicators of the child's pain; (b) describe which pain indicators were most influential to nurses in decision-making about interventions for managing the child's pain; (c) describe pain interventions used by nurses; (d) compare postoperative analgesic orders to recommended dosages for the children; and (e) explore relationships between the child's self-report of pain and medication dosages administered. Subjects included 19 children aged 5-17 years who experienced 20 orthopedic surgical procedures (one child had two surgeries one week apart). Data were collected by staff nurses for the first five days after surgery. Pain levels were reported using the Oucher Scale. Postoperative pain was reported at moderate levels and showed only a gradual decrease throughout the hospital stay. Nonverbal pain indicators included crying and tense face. The child's complaint of pain and reported Oucher scores were most influential in influencing nurses to intervene in the child's pain. Nonpharmacological comfort measures included positioning and reassurance. All children received medications for pain; 49% of the orders were within the recommended therapeutic dosage range. A small but significant correlation was found between the child's reported pain level and the morphine equivalents of pain medication received. Recommendations included development of nursing flow charts that provide space to record pain levels and nursing interventions, in-service education for nurses on nonpharmacological interventions, and further research with a larger sample and a single pain rating scale.

Parental influences on childhood fitness and activity patterns.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of parental attitudes and self-reported exercise habits on the fitness and activity levels of their children. One parent from each of 1,253 families was asked about exercise habits and completed the Exercise Benefits and Barriers Scale (EBBS) to determine their personal attitudes toward exercise. The children completed a self-reported activity questionnaire (SRA) and had their aerobic power predicted using a cycle ergometer test. Multiple regression indicated that the parents' EBBS scores were weakly associated with the child's maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max); the mothers' association was significant, but the fathers was not. The children's SRA scores were not correlated with parents' attitudes or exercise habits. These results suggest either that factors other than parental attitudes and exercise habits are more influential in determining the fitness and activity levels of children or that the instruments lack precision. Thus, to improve the cardiovascular fitness of children, we need to examine factors in the child's environment that may be more influential than parental attitudes and examples.

Compelling imagery, unanticipated speech and deceptive memory: neurocognitive models of auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: The application of neurocognitive models to study schizophrenia has been influential in understanding the nature of this complex and heterogeneous disorder. However, a comprehensive and empirically validated account of auditory hallucinations remains elusive. The aim of this review was to critically assess the current evidence for specific neurocognitive deficits associated with auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in schizophrenia. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted of research involving three influential cognitive models of auditory hallucinations: those implicating dysfunction in auditory imagery, verbal self-monitoring, and episodic memory. RESULTS: The findings of the review suggested that AVHs have been associated with impaired verbal self-monitoring, impaired memory for self-generated speech, heightened influence of top-down processing on perception, and an externalising response bias. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of the findings of the review a multidimensional model of AVHs is proposed incorporating the identified cognitive deficits and biases.

A study of body weight concerns and weight control practices of 4th and 7th grade adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess grade, race, socioeconomic status and gender differences in perceptions of body size, weight concerns, and weight control practices between 4th and 7th grade students in South Carolina. DESIGN: Two random samples, consisting of a total of 1,597 children (53.1% white, 51.97% female, 44.9% 4th graders) participated in two questionnaire surveys. Both surveys included a series of seven female and seven male body size drawings, body image and weight concern questions, and questions pertaining to weight control practices. Responses to the questionnaire were analyzed using chi-square analysis and the General Linear Model. RESULTS: Using socioeconomic status (SES), race, gender, and grade as independent variables, differences in ideal adult body size, opposite gender ideal adult body size, weight concerns, perceptions of family/peer weight concerns, perceptions of own body size and weight control practices were studied. Analyses revealed that 4th grade males select a larger ideal adult body size and opposite gender ideal adult body size when compared to 7th grade males (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0078, respectively). Fourth grade females indicated less personal concern about their weight than 7th grade females (p = 0.0009). Fourth graders also perceived less family/peer concern about weight than 7th graders (p = 0.0027) and 7th graders described themselves as being more overweight than 4th graders (p = 0.0039). Blacks selected a significantly larger body size than white children for ideal adult (p = 0.0287) and ideal opposite gender adult body size (p < 0.0001 for males, p = 0.0030 for females). Blacks also perceived less personal and family/peer concern about weight when compared to whites (p = 0.0083). More whites reported that they were trying to lose weight, as compared to blacks (p = 0.0010). Males also selected significantly larger body size silhouettes than females for ideal adult body size (p = 0.0012). Males expressed less personal concern about weight (p < 0.0001), perceived less family/peer concern about weight (p < 0.0001), and were less likely than females to be engaged in weight loss (p < 0.0001). Females in the high SES category selected a significantly smaller ideal male adult body size than females in the low SES group (p = 0.0124) and more females in the high SES category were trying to lose weight when compared to females in the low SES group (p = 0.0055). CONCLUSION: This study indicates that early in a child's sociocultural development, grade level, gender, race, and SES are influential in the perception of ideal adult body size and opposite gender ideal adult body size. These factors are also influential in determining concerns about weight and weight control practices. The findings of this study support the need to begin health and wellness education efforts early in childhood while taking into account racial, gender, age, and SES disparities. This knowledge can also be useful in targeting interventions for both obesity and eating disorders.
