Adaptation, Psychological↗

The incest cycle across generations.

Using the theories of Murray Bowen and the teachings of Joseph Campbell, the author presents a clinical case to demonstrate how generations of sexual abuse led to anxiety symptoms in the offspring. Methods used to obtain and interpret the multigenerational family genogram, and the significance of family myths in sustaining dysfunctional patterns, are reviewed.

Perceived life changes for children and adolescents following disclosure of father-daughter incest.

Eleven families comprised the sample for this qualitative study. The daughters in these families had allegedly been abused by a father or father-figure. The study showed four major life changes occurred for these girls. They were loss of father, placement away from home, alteration in familial roles, and participation in the investigation of sexual abuse. These interventions required to stop the abuse were viewed as further traumatizations. Implications of the study for child and adolescent psychiatric nursing practice are discussed.

Ocular Münchhausen syndrome induced by incest.

This report describes a young female patient whose long-lasting ocular problems were ultimately found to be due to self-induced damage of the corneas with chemicals, and later, self-inflicted perforation of the eye with a safety pin. More than one year after these ocular symptoms were presented, it was discovered that the eye diseases were in fact attempts by the patient to escape from the psychic anxieties which were the result of an incestuous relationship between the patient and her father.
