[Experience in isolating Campylobacter jejuni from patients with acute intestinal diseases].

Erythrite agar, a commercial culture medium produced by the Research Institute for Culture Media (Makhachkala, USSR), is suitable for the cultivation of C. jejuni after the addition of hemolized sheep blood. The addition of antibiotics to the medium permits its use for the isolation of C. jejuni from feces. By means of this medium C. jejuni has been isolated from the feces of 10% of patients hospitalized on account of acute infectious intestinal diseases.

[Current possibilities of X-ray diagnosis of small intestine diseases using the agent Entero-view].

The paper analyzes the current capacities of routine (classical) X-ray study in the diagnosis of organ diseases of the small bowel. The distinctive feature of the paper is that in addition to routine barium passage through the small bowel, the new barium contrast agent Entero-view specially designed for its exploration is used. Of the 115 examined patients with various gastroenterological diseases, 76 underwent Entero-view examination that revealed different organ pathology of the small bowel in 28 cases (Crohn's disease in 18, tuberculosis in 3, lymphomas in 5, and cancer in 2). A normal X-ray pattern of the small bowel was diagnosed in 48 cases. The authors highly appreciate this agent. In their opinion, it is essentially helpful in solving one of the most difficult problems in X-ray gastroenterology--present-day X-ray diagnosis of small bowel pathology. The paper describes a procedure for using this agent. It gives a normal X-ray pattern of the small bowel, the agent's use has provided a particularly vivid image of both a normal part of the ileum and its different organ pathology-associated changes.

[Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID): an unusual form of gastrointestinal lymphoma].

Worsening of long-lasting diarrhea, abdominal discomfort and weight loss were main symptoms in a 27-year-old Moroccan woman who had lived in Germany for 18 years. Pseudomonas, salmonella and lamblia cysts were found in stools. Histological examination of the gastrointestinal tract showed immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID), characterized by atrophy of the villi and lymphoplasmocytic infiltrates. alpha 1-heavy chains were found immunohistologically in the biopsy specimen, but not in serum, urine or jejunal juice. HLA-typing gave evidence of A9. Antibiotic treatment was successful for almost one year. Clinical, histological and immunological diagnosis of IPSID in an African woman living for nearly 20 years in Europe shows that, besides environmental factors, genetic disposition is an essential factor in the development of IPSID.

[When is ileocolonoscopy indicated in chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases?].

The question frequently arises in proctological practice whether there is an indication for ileocolonoscopy in chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases. Endoscopy is an essential constituent of the initial diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Control colonoscopies are not necessary for assessing remission and in renewed acute attacks with confirmed diagnosis are without therapeutic consequences. Ileocolonoscopy with stepwise biopsy is currently the only accepted monitoring programme for carcinoma prophylaxis in the presence of an increased risk of colorectal carcinoma in both diseases.

[Characteristics of serological group O144:K? Escherichia isolated in acute intestinal diseases].

A study of 14 strains of E. coli belonging to serological group O144: K? isolated in clinical dysentery (bacteriologically unconfirmed), from contacts in the foci of clinical dysentery and acute enteric disease of unknown etiology, and also in prophylactic examination, was made. Among these cultures there were strains with shigella characteristics. Along with the serological type O144: K?: H--described earlier there was determined serological type O144: K?: H4 differing in the enzymatic activity and the absence of the capacity to produce shigellae keratoconjunctivitis. The cultures of the given serological type were isolated in the focus of bacteriologically-undeciphered acute intestinal disease, this pointing to their possible etiological role. In the light of the aforesaid escherichia of the O144: K? serologically groups could be referred to the enteropathogenic ones; in this connection it is necessary to prepare preparations for their serological identification.

Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease in Basenji dogs: morphologic observations.

Eleven Basenjis with chronic diarrhea were evaluated for pathologic changes. Light microscopic and ultrastructural changes were characterized by lymphoplasmacytic infiltration of the lamina propria of the intestine and stomach and by evidence of degranulation of mast cells in close association with immunocytes. Other changes included hyperplasia of the thyroid parafollicular cells, thyroid follicular atrophy, epidermal atrophy, and ulceration of the pinna. Similarities of the condition in Basenjis and immunoproliferative small intestinal disease and Menetrier's disease in persons are presented.
